The Dark Souls of GTA demakes Congraturation, you have been awarded the best game of 20XX. Thank you. Retro City Rampage is a very self-referential title with both retro and contemporary gaming references for the time, where you play a game that was originally a de-make of GTA III but from a top down perspective. Aside from the witty writing it does enough to be unique though, as the controls are very sharp with most of the deaths within the game coming as a result of the player instead of the game itself due to the options the player has at his disposal. Some critics have argued that the game takes a sharp difficulty spike towards the end of the game, but in my opinion the end of the game sections become far easier when you realize that every enemy is visible on the over-world map and you are given weapons that can hit the targets on the map before you are even in their attack range to shoot and kill you. The options you have seem very overwhelming initially with many ways to customize the layout and graphics of the screen itself but weirdly not many ways to customize the controls unless you're playing with a controller. That being said, the actions the titular "Player" character can perform vary wildly with the stomp mechanic (being able to pause your momentum in the air and fall down like a lead balloon) being the key to success as if you master it you can easily take out groups of enemies without taking damage and in my opinion is the easiest way to clear the dreaded "Death Cam VHS" (parody of Smash TV) without dying. If you're intending on 100%ing the game, I would advise against it personally. If you're taking your time and playing mini-games inbetween the main story and sidequest the game can be cleared in 8-10 hours. However, the 100% requires picking up small collectables that are arbitrarily put on a map and bonus "spree" missions that often require luck for the gold medal as the pedestrian spawns are always random. (Most notably being the 50 in 50 gold medal with the steamroller.) Conclusion It's a good experience as an indie game with many hidden secrets and minigames that are charming and on the surface add to the experience and hint that they're far more beneath the surface but the joy of playing will be stripped away from your soul if you ever decided to 100% the game and leave it in another castle. 7/10

Retro City Rampage is a fun little game that was originally an independent project to try and shove Grand Theft Auto 3 into a top-down style from previous games while using the 8-bit limitations of the original NES. As the project expanded, development moved to PC and additional characters from various retro and current gaming influences were added, doing away with adherence to the GTA 3 story and becoming an original venture. It's definitely fun. With the almost authentic 8-bit style combined with classic top-down GTA gameplay and a wealth of 80s and 90s gaming references, there are puns and parodies in every mission. This becomes something of a mixed blessing as any sort of original heart and soul is lost amidst a sea of one-liners and brief cameos. NES games were never very well known for their depth, but often times RCR ends up copying the shallow joys of retro gaming rather than poking fun at them. There's a large number of vehicles, weapons, and power-ups to explore. While core gameplay revolves around driving in top-down mode or controlling your guy on foot, there are a number of side-scrolling sections and brief visits to other classic game settings and controls. I would've liked to see even more, but it's pretty impressive how much is shoehorned into a single title as it is. The breakpoint of where parody meets copycat is during a recreation of the infamous TMNT underwater dam level. While the narrative and characters involved tease at how impractical electrified seaweed and spikes are, the game then throws these things at you without flinching. Maybe if I had died a few more times it would've given me the option to skip this retro hellscape as it did a previous overly punishing mini-game, but the fact that it throws you into one of the well-known worst video game challenges from the NES and tells you to do it with a straight face sucks some of the humor out of the occasion. Between Contra, paperboy, back to the future, smash TV and even mario, there's a lot of love in this little package. The ending was a bit tepid in light of everything else, but that tends to be a common problem in games with an open-world carnival of attractions. Putting a bow on the end is difficult without the right touch, and it slips a bit when given the chance of a grand finale. Don't let that stop you from picking it up though. Retro City Rampage is a reasonably priced nostalgia trip on just about every platform. Between the main story, achievements and collectibles, there's a surprising amount of content and replay value for an indie game.

Retro City Rampage is an excellent homage to not only classic Grand Theft Auto, but also a plethora of other retro classics and 80's and 90's pop culture. The game plays like your typical top down shooter a kin to the likes of smash tv and has plenty of weapons to rampage with as you explore the city, cause mayhem and complete missions. Theftropolis is a well designed open world with tons of easter eggs and secrets to find and is very vibrant and colourful. The game has excellent 8-bit graphics and a very good soundtrack with some really catchy tunes. The games plot whilst not Shakespeare is definitely a good time and has some really fun moments and some good laughs. I highly recommend!!!
