Kind of like an older Anno game but less focus on trading. Some frustrating moments with balance never enough iron and can't trade for more. Finished campaign in 18 hours not really any reason to continue you can't really make huge cities since resources are limited. Fun while it lasted.

I have to admit I have never played Anno before so my first instinct when I saw this is the memories I had with the Port Royale 1&2 game series back in the days. And it gets surprisingly close to that! Yes, it's not as complicated as other simulation-games (yet?) but it does the trick for me! There are a couple of elements that are a bit unintuitive (but being worked on according to the roadmap!) but they don't hurt the overall experience. Other games (like Port Royale) always struggled with the sea battles but Republic of Pirates solves them through a pretty nice system! I personally would like to see a tiny bit more complexity and the always highly requested multiplayer but I know how hard that is to implement. (If a dev reads this, I would not mind even just the non-auhtoritative peer-to-peer multiplayer solution through e.g. Steam network, that would be fantastic)

I hate to knock this game too much, because the theme of it is enjoyable and it's very nice looking. It's a decent light city builder/resource management game with a enjoyable pirate theme. The music is good, the sea shanties are delightful, the graphics are crisp, but it suffers from the same problem that a lot of these games do - you're ultimately just juggling resources around to fulfill arbitrary goals that the game sets for you. The ol' "collect 10 of this resource" thing. The problem is that there's no indication of how to fix the supply problem, and no way to tell your people to stop consuming something so that you can get past the aggravating arbitrary goal so that you can move on with the game. I'm not very patient, so when I have 10 pig farms and 10 butchers and still no meat in my inventory, I either want the game to tell me why, what the problem is, or how to fix it or I'm going to quit playing it. If I hit a brick wall, I'm going to uninstall it and move on. So I'm uninstalling it and moving on. It's not a bad game. In fact, I enjoyed a lot of it. I guess I just need more in-game info on what's going on with the economy and how to manipulate it correctly. All I was able to figure out was "just build more and hope it works". That strategy eventually failed, and I'm stuck right at the end of the game with no understanding of how to move forward.

I have very fond memories of Tropico 2: Pirate Cove, and have been looking for a long time for a game with a similar feel. After seeing this, I decided to give it a go. I'm only about an hour in. I'm not a hardcore enthusaist, just someone who loves the general world of management simulators, city builders, 4X, and similar. This game is very nicely put together, with a great soundtrack, artwork, and feel. It really feels like the developers had fun making this. For my interests it's a great, fun, through-and-through pirate themed city-builder. The campaign mode, which is what I've played so far, seems a good semi-tutorial introducing each concept in line with the story. The voice acting is great, and I'm looking forward to seeing it develop. If you're a hardcore city builder fan, looking for deep complexity, maybe this won't be for you. As a more casual player who is more interested in enjoying the theme and building up my city while following the campaign, I'm very glad that I took a chance on this game. I've had a lot of fun so far. For reference: similar games I've loved include the original Settlers and Settlers II many years ago, Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom, Tropico 2: Pirate Cove, and more recently IXION and Frostpunk. This reminds me a lot of Tropico 2, in a good way (although the soundtrack, while absolutely great, can't quite compare).

I agree with other reviewers, if you're really into Anno, this is probably not the game for you. I personally find Anno to be a bit much, especially after a long day of responsibilities, and this game scratches the itch while still being casual enough (it also costs way less). It reminds me a lot of Sid Meier's Pirates, with less complex battles and city building. I will say, if you like a challenge, this game isn't going to provide much. But if you like pirates, city building without too much resource management and the occasional simple battle, you'll enjoy Republic of Pirates. There are still places where the game is a little lacking, but it has a ton of potential, and it is fun. I suggest giving the demo a try before purchasing, you'll get a good feel for the game there. They claim that the demo save will transfer to the game, but my save was corrupted, so keep in mind that you may have to start the game over if you do purchase it.
