Another fun retro FPS, apparently considered one of the PS2's best shooters, but it holds its own against any of the others. It's certainly intense - the second half jumps up in difficulty a fair bit, with much tougher enemies coming at you with more powerful weapons, as well as a couple of boss fights. Using the vehicles is fun and I was able to control them easily using the mouse. Warning: you may have to find a workaround in an instance where you need to lower a sub into the water. Quicksaving just after I pressed the button seemed to work. Yep, there is water on Mars.

an absolute classic, really had fun playing this game just like back then, destructible environments are also fun to mess around. though the best part of this game may have to be throwing charges at random people and seeing them run around and scream and anyone around the person also gets scared, that never gets old lol.

it's so very much like Half-Life. i mean, really. you know how they used to call fps games "DOOM Clones"? this kinda reminds me of a "Half-Life clone" but not in a particularly bad way. the shooting is satisfying and there's a nice selection of weapons (though i mainly used the shotgun, assault rifle, and precision rifle) with a good punch to them. the level design is very naturalistic most of the time and flows well, but later in the game some of the puzzles suffer from "nobody told me why i have to do this" syndrome. the art direction is also very good, especially on the environments. great texture work and modeling throughout... though the humans and facial animations can sometimes leave much to be desired. the forced stealth sections and the friendly NPC pathfinding both sucked major ass, but luckily it's somewhat short lived before you go back to shooting fascist guards. the music was moody but somewhat forgettable, tho. as for the story... it's kinda hit or miss, i guess, it doesn't feel very substantive and there was a lot more i think they could have done with the cool setting and themes. i mean, the good guys are literally revolutionary "reds" and nobody talks about class struggle once! but i digress. the vehicle sections were cool, much more expressive than Half-Life's train segments, but the controls were kinda crap for the land vehicles. i really wanted WASD to move the thing around, instead of aiming the vehicle's direction with my mouse. the total playtime for me was about 3 hours, but i played on easy difficulty, so your mileage may vary. overall it was a very enjoyable FPS experience, especially if you're a fan of Half-Life. and the GeoMod tech was of course 10/10, no notes, i just wish they'd used it more!!! oh and i feel as if i must mention Parker's Mind, a 2009-2010 YouTube series that has forever warped my view of this game. Parker will always be an aussie in my heart, damnit!! if you're gonna play it, use the Dash Faction patch. it made the game run like a dream, even under Linux with Proton!! (oh and FUCK that stupid trial-and-error puzzle that the game ends with. BLEGH)

JUST YOU AND ME MINER CLASSICCC Gun-play can feel a little inaccurate at times but if you're a fan of OG Half Life, you'll love this. Great weapon variety and pace at which you receive them, feels good to discover new guns. Soundtrack fkin hits. The jumping puzzles. Just make sure you download the Dash Faction patch!

I was heavily debating whether to leave a negative review or not. Red Faction is an amazing game that takes me right back to my childhood and feels just as fun as back then. The negative reviews are for the port on Steam, which is far beyond sub-par. To anyone concerned: Dash Faction, which you can download online, patches everything wrong with the port, allowing you to enjoy Red Faction. A negative review would not make Steam fix the port, so I decided to make it positive, just looking at the game and not the broken port.
