March 2025
I can't recommend Receiver II enough. It's the one game I can point to that is MORE likely than less likely to have maybe actually saved someone's life and in more ways than one. I typically review scripts in my reviews, and I'm going to here as well, it's got a strong script, but the gameplay philosophy behind the game so deeply ties into its working narrative that the two simply cannot be discussed separately. Receiver II is a game that is pretending, initially, to be a conspiracy thriller game. You find yourself in a realistic setting with video gaming's most realistic gun ever and you are tasked with finding and "receiving" audio cassette tapes, each of which contains recorded instructions on how to further wake from a dream you've been subjected to. The organization you are receiving these instructions from carries with it a shade of the sinister. Or rather- the lack of understanding you start with does. Because, and mild spoiler alert here, the more you come into contact with these tapes, the more you "receive", the more you realize that the organization is unreservedly good in basically every acknowledgeable aspect. Dedicated to truth, dedicated to freedom, and to personal responsibility and personal growth. What makes them appear sinister at first is the simple fact that you do not understand them, and the Receivers are encouraging you at every turn to lean on your own understanding and make your own informed decisions and judgments. So the conspiratorial nature of the game is still shrouded in mystery. So if I'm learning more as I continue to receive, what am I learning? The answer is- you're learning to question your environment. All of a sudden, these realistic settings make no sense. It seemed fine that a warehouse linked effortlessly into a gallery exhibition. You weren't thinking about it until it seemed to share the exact same space as a metropolitan apartment. The moment you question it, the less sense it makes. You, and the rest of the world, are being assailed by something called The Threat, and it is keeping you confused, upset, and cynical. Unlike the amoral Matrix, the Threat is a directly malevolent entity that seeks your suffering, seeks to break the world in half. Why? Doesn't matter, it demonstrably IS. And the theme is resting on what you can observe. In these tapes, you will find real, actionable advice on how to improve your life with no leaning one way or another for political or artistic purposes. Observable reality is the key focus here. "Maintain optimal effort" means not burning yourself out (which will make you LESS productive) but also keeping your mind focused and honed. Trauma is not a political term here, it is a description of a negative event that has permanently altered your behavior. Here's how you deal with it. But what's more- Here is how to operate a gun SAFELY. Not drawn in by the jingoistic recklessness that defines "pro-gun", not driven in by the learned helplessness that defines "anti-gun". A gun is an exceptionally dangerous thing that could save your life if used properly. So here's how. The game is a realistic gun simulator. Every aspect of the gun is individually simulated. There is no reload button, but there are commands to eject the magazine, insert and extrude bullets from it, place it back inside the gun, rack the slide, and inspect the chamber. And you can fuck up ANY one of these steps in a multitude of realistic and significantly dangerous ways. You are just as much a danger to yourself as any of the enemies The Threat has placed in front of you. Especially when you reach the "trapped tapes", which is a gameplay experience so profound you couldn't pay me to spoil it for you. But, as any trial in life, it may be worth doing despite the danger involved, and the key to overcoming danger is learning about it. Expanding your knowledge. And best of all, this game makes that expanding of knowledge fun- which could have been the entire review by itself. With themes of gun safety, self-preservation, self-improvement, common understanding of your fellow man, and a striking throughline of the realities of suicide, we don't know how many lives that Receiver II has saved and we never will. The answer could be zero. But the answer could, just as easily, be one or more.

So I'll give you all the Good the Bad and the ugly of this game, with the frame of reference that people have played the first one. The good There's more of everything in general. The guns, the way they handle, the way health works, the different enemies, the different tile sets for the random world gen, the gun range which has a lot of fun things in it, everything that they've put out has just been amazing and it is very much in its unfinished state worth $20. Hands down the best gun simulation game I've ever played it's 100% all about the guns and there's not a drop of blood in it, and the lore and tape content actually has real world values that we're thinking about. Absolutely not a mindless game at all and very refreshing. The bad This is still a very hardcore game. Yes you do get a little bit more health and a little bit more forgiveness, and there are progression of difficulty in levels, but you can die in like 15 seconds literally from the moment you start a game if you're not careful. The AI and the robots are even more difficult than ever, and while there are more tapes and more and things to get at every level they make it worth playing over and over again yes, but at some point you want to stay at a higher level but you keep dying and getting put down to the baseline and then you're rushing through to try to get back to where you wanted to be... It can be quite frustrating. this definitely is a high skill game as well and only the most hardcore stealth espionage people are going to really be able to play at the top level, and get all the content, so at some point your skill walked and you don't get to play the content. Absolutely not a game for a Casual Gamer . I was disappointed too that the gun range really has nothing to do with the main content. I'm really grateful for it because this game really needs it as gun technical as it is, but they could have done a bit more with it. The ugly Wolfire game sued valve over their business practices and based on the stances they taken not only are they not going to continue to develop receiver 2 they may never use the platform again or even be a business after the money's paid to the lawyers. There was a DLC in the works but it looks like the game is finished now due to this business, so don't buy this expecting anymore they're done either on steam or in general, and if anything does happen there may be a receiver three but I wouldn't hold your breath. I really hope I'm wrong but they've been incommunicado and lawsuits are expensive, not sure how the little guy can survive. Overall, the game is fantastic to me and there's nothing quite like it anywhere I've seen. It's a hardcore gun simulation with random world gun and Matrix like dystopian more that keeps you playing again and again and again until your eyes bleed and your temples are throbbing. For sure there's more that could have been done in it I'm sad to see that this is probably the finished product, but I highly recommend supporting an independent developer of the caliber of these folks and the price is a steal for the content you get.

Speedcleared a jam, shot down three taser drones, ran past an armored ceiling turret and dodged every shot, grabbed the last tape I needed underneath it, and got to safety in less than 15 seconds. I then, out of instinct, holstered my glock to reload a magazine and shot myself in the leg, killing me instantly. Brilliant. Cannot recommend more.

8/10 Although I do find the stoic philosophy and subtle alt-right sentiments being drip fed to me to be quite cringe, I do find the tapes to be oddly soothing in a way. Given the setting and pacing of the game, it is quite welcoming to be told to slow down, relax, take your time, slow is smooth smooth is fast. I found myself playing those words in my head every time I faced a stressful situation in this game, and found success most of the time. Games are meant to make the players feel something, this game made me feel skillful, powerful, and level-headed. That satisfying moment when you get the spin of the cylinder just right where you miss the filled-in chamber, that feeling you get when you finally master the reload mechanic, getting a perfect hit on a turret! Other players may not feel this way and that is okay, players that want simple, fast, fun have the right to want that, but that is not here, not this game.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience! Frustrating at times, and very punishing, but nothing if not fair and consistent. Every time I died it was because I got careless or took unnecessary risks, and the game slowly trains you out of doing that. I'm also a sucker for podcast-type lore progression, and the game does a really good job of drip-feeding you the story in little bite-sized chunks as you progress through the game. Overall 9/10 one of the best games I've played.
