It's Privateer 3. It's literally just Privateer 3. This isn't a bad thing at all, mind you, I just find it funny how blatant it is. And honestly, it's kinda all it needs to be? Give Privateer a control scheme not designed for an autistic octopus and a banger soundtrack and you've got yourself a quality arcade space sim of the sort you just don't see nowadays. As for the story... look, I can't even remember it. I can barely remember the main character's name, all I know is she looks like every lesbian's dream girlfriend and kills people for money and that's good enough for me. Like in most space sims the story is entirely perfunctory anyway, it's just a device to give you a guided tour of Wacky Space Texas and a few setpiece battles while you're still learning the controls, and I had the most fun just ignoring it in favour of doing my own thing in the sandbox. It's superior in this regard to Rebel Galaxy 1 IMO, with no levelled gear or level gating stopping you from just doing whatever you want in the sandbox. And the messing around in the sandbox is good, you've got a pleasantly uncomplicated arcade flight model, weapons that feel fun to use, a half dozen-ish (plus a few variants) ships to upgrade to to fit your preferred play style, all with their own bespoke cockpit interiors (complete with the customary Privateer style deeply questionable visibility), two fast travel modes that make flying between points of interest a breeze and a soundtrack full of licenced C-list-radio country, blues rock, metal and other, less appropriate genres. It's got nowhere near the depth of Elite Dangerous for instance, but this is IMO a strength, it's good, brainless fun. It helps that it's got very strong presentation as well, with every corner of the universe oozing with run-down space hicksville vibes that fit the game perfectly. The one criticism of the game I have is that, while it is generally a good looking game (more for its strongly Foss and Elson-inspired art direction than any particular graphical achievements, although I do value the former more highly anyway), it does overuse bloom and window dirt to the point where it's legitimately hard to see what is going on sometimes. It also has a truly bizarre implementation of motion blur that makes the background stars double in brightness whenever you turn even slightly. It's horrible and I hate it and because the studio went under a while ago it'll be there forever. But these really are minor complaints. If you see this on a sale, definitely grab it for a couple hours of classic-flavoured space sim joy.

IDK why people call it a space sim... it's basically a dog fighter with quests. you can turn combat assists off if that's your thing. It's a fun game most of the time. If you don't like the combat you're not gonna like the game. It's like 75% combat.

The first game had a real vibe, but had some shortcomings. The developers tried to address those in this prequel, but a few things were lost along the way. But overall, I really enjoyed it. PROS: - Music is chef's kiss. - Visuals are pretty good. - Story is stronger than previous game. - Combat is 3D this time around, and and very fun. - You can paint your ship! CONS: - Seems to be less ship choices. - Less customization options. - A little heavy-handed with assist options (but can be disabled). - While the story is better, you are locked into playing a character, so really no immersion or self-insert ability here. FINAL THOUGHTS: Would really like a game like this with more pilot customization as well as ship customization. Being able to do those two things is what makes these games exciting. I love the universe that the developers have crafted, and hope they make another entry.

This is my favorite dogfight space sim. The controls, the handling, the optics, the soundtrack. Everything is so good. The fast travel system is one of the best in my opinion. The dynamic animations during fast travel give the illusion that you are still flying through space by yourself. Sure, it's not easy to get into, but here's how I did it the first time on the Switch: - Start by doing low-risk cargo runs. - Then join the merchant guild and do merchant runs to make a lot of money. - Buy a bigger afterburner and then install a power plant. If you run into enemies with this setup, switch all power to the engines and push the afterburner to the max (999 speed) until you can activate your fast travel again. You can outrun any pirate this way. Do this for a few game sessions and sooner or later you will be able to buy a bigger ship with powerful weapons. Give this game a chance. It deserves one.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw ā€Crank the volume, Chamber another round and burn like hellā€ Double Damage RIP Now I really enjoyed the first game and was really excited to see Travis dropping little nuggets of information about a follow up. I had no issue with it being fighter based rather than capital ship based as most of my star-fighter experience from XW/TF days were itching for something like that. When DD & Travis announced it was to be an Epic Exclusive upon release I was very disappointed as a Steam Purist I will not support Epic at all. However I understood why an indie team of 5 people would take that option in the current climate. So I waited patiently for the Steam release and left it there. However there was enough backlash from the sludgy part of our community which directly attacked and harassed Travis and his team to the point where Double Damage games threw in the towel and are no more. This is truly sad as 5 people had crafted this universe of characters with great gameplay and graphics and its now over. I hope the people who were involved in this feel ashamed that they had a hand in killing a fantastic indie company that could have flourished into a beast. My View ā€Last Chance on the Final Frontier, Back Into the Life... ā€œ Outlaw is a different style of game compared to the first as its based on small fighter ship to ship combat as opposed to capital class broadside style. However the main loop is similar. Follow the main mission, do side quests, trade, mine, pirate, bounty hunt. The graphics are great and have some of the best explosions you have ever seen. Some incredible lighting and flares of of stars and explosions. The sound track is again amazing for the atmosphere and style of the game. Very similar to the first lots of Dark Country and Hard Rock and even a station dedicated to Hardbop/Jazz for when you need to feel those Cowboy Bebop vibes. Controls where very good for me, I used an XBO controller and everything worked really well. One very cool feature is the Inertial Damper Cut which when activated allows your ship to stay on course while being able to rotate fully in any direction. Selection of mini-games, like Dice, Slots, 8-Ball, Arcade Cabinets. My only gripes with the game were - Auto pilot inhibited just like in the first game and the sheer amount of jumps in story missions was sometimes annoying. Overall I enjoyed my time again in Rebel Galaxy and am genuinely sad this is the end. There was going to be more, DLC, modding tools, 3D printed custom ship models but all of this died with the closure of DDG. To get a pair of games of this quality made by only a 5 person dev team meant things could only get bigger and better, this series had the real chance of blowing up to be something massive and now we will never get to see that. For shame people. Trail-Dave ā€So long, space cowboyā€œ
