This is one of my childhood games. Seeing it on sale for $2 was pretty nice. This review is probably biased. | 9 / 10 | PROS: +++Modding is EZ and can fix many problems with the original game. + Free roam enabled as soon as you finish the 30 second intro. + Runs well on most computers. Graphics easily configurable in the launcher. + Music is a shake-up; instead of standard synth or techno, you get rock and DnB. + Really nice Space Western-style atmosphere, akin to classics like Cowboy Bebop. + Has everything a space sim needs: combat, piracy, factions, trading, exploration, a nice ship selection, guilds, the works. = 2014 graphics, nothing crazy. = Story is ok. = Limited movement; no moving up or down. The Militia probably wrote some law about it. = Game is singleplayer only. Curiously, some mercenaries have a "Player" faction alignment, showing that the game may have been planned to be multiplayer or split-screen. CONS: - Getting started is rough if you're new. - NPCs outside of the main story are pretty cookie-cutter, you see the same faces and voices a lot. - Limited customization, only the name of the ship can be changed; colors are unique to the ship.

Get it on sale. Get it for the soundtrack. Get it for the vibes. Get it for the unique experience of being a deep-space trucker who's also heavily armed and trigger happy. It feels a little wonky and unfinished. Get it anyway.

It's some mindless fun from simpler times, easy controls, just blasting away, trade a little on the side, accept a bounty or two, do whatever you like. Grab a couple of beers, turn your brain off and fire away. The music is charming in the beginning but gets old really soon. Doesn't really catch the Firefly vibes anyway. Would still get it on sale though.

Overall, a fun game, but the campaign of kind of shorter than I expected. I might keep playing to get some of the achievements, but I wish there was more to the story. It feels like it's just missing something. Maybe it's because the endgame seems to be over so soon after it starts. As for the gameplay, I liked it. The capital ship focus of the game takes some getting used to, but it's fun. I did feel like there wasn't any need to upgrade to the higher-tier ships, though. I completed pretty much the entire game using a mid-tier ship and some careful maneuvering to hide in the blind spots of the larger ships.
