Gameplay: "Realpolitiks" focuses on real-time strategy with pause functionality, allowing players to control any nation and guide it to global dominance. The game offers a variety of political scenarios, both historical and fictional, providing a broad spectrum of challenges. Players must manage resources, conduct diplomacy, and engage in warfare while keeping their nation stable and prosperous. The depth of the gameplay lies in its intricate system of policies, economic management, and international relations. Graphics: The graphical presentation of "Realpolitiks" is functional but not particularly groundbreaking. The game employs a top-down map view, which is typical for grand strategy titles. While the interface is clean and the map is detailed enough to distinguish between regions, it lacks the visual flair seen in some other modern strategy games. The focus here is more on the strategic elements than on visual immersion. Story and Scenarios: "Realpolitiks" doesn't have a linear story but instead offers various scenarios and challenges based on real-world and fictional geopolitical situations. These scenarios provide different goals and obstacles, keeping the gameplay fresh. The absence of a central narrative allows for a sandbox experience, where players create their own stories through their actions and decisions. Performance: The game performs well on a range of PC setups. It's well-optimized, with quick load times and stable performance even during complex scenarios with numerous active elements. There are occasional bugs, but the developers have been proactive in addressing these issues with updates and patches. Complexity and Learning Curve: "Realpolitiks" is a complex game that can be daunting for newcomers to the grand strategy genre. The tutorial is helpful but might not cover all nuances, leaving players to learn some aspects through trial and error. Veterans of the genre will appreciate the depth and the multitude of strategies available, but beginners might need patience to fully grasp the mechanics. Sound: The sound design in "Realpolitiks" is adequate, with a suitable soundtrack that complements the game's political and strategic themes. Sound effects are minimal but effective, serving their purpose without being intrusive. Conclusion: "Realpolitiks" is a solid entry in the grand strategy genre, offering a deep and engaging experience for fans of political and strategic simulations. Its emphasis on modern-day geopolitics sets it apart from many historical strategy games, providing a unique and challenging experience. While the graphics and sound design are not its strongest points, the depth of gameplay and variety of scenarios make it a worthwhile title for strategy enthusiasts. Pros: Deep and engaging gameplay with a focus on modern geopolitics Variety of scenarios and challenges Well-optimized performance Allows for a sandbox experience with player-driven narratives Cons: Steep learning curve for newcomers Functional but unimpressive graphics Minimal sound design Rating: 7.5/10 "Realpolitiks" is recommended for players who enjoy intricate strategy games and are interested in modern political simulations. Its complexity and depth provide a rewarding experience for those willing to invest the time to master its systems.

The idea of this game is awesome, but the implementation has several major issues, which causes so many negative reviews. My first review was negative as well, which I leave below this news review. The game is wonderful after you understand who to play it, which takes multiple hours and lots of efforts considering that this game lacks proper gameplay tutorials and video reviews. This game is awesome because it has so many cool features in country management, outperforming even Civilization 6 in many aspects. It provides: - Multiple kinds of diplomatic relations and espionage missions, which require "action points" and money for the execution; - Capabilities to acquire, liberate (upon defeating the country) or release back (a diplomatic relation) provinces of countries; - Participation in United Nations, proposing various policies and lobbing them; - Side objectives with rewards (that are rarely aligned with the player intentions); - Battles with multiple actions, including nuclear shoots; - Country development projects in various fields (industry, economics, etc.) However, the lack of proper tutorial for the game features and gameplay logic, and moderate UIX causes many negative reviews. I started playing as Ukraine, which is a very hard choice because of the aggressive and large neighbor, Russia. It took me around a day to understand the gamelogic properly and several days more to return back the captured provinces (Donetsk and Crimea), and then it was not so hard to conquer most of Russia. The most annoying UIX issues are: - lack of keyboard shortcuts for the time control (start, stop, speedup; OK/Cancel in popping up messages); - lack of the mouse sensitivity control and listing of available controls with their customization; - inability to enlarge mouse cursor on large displays; - the popping up notifications are not as useful as they could be; it should be possible to overview multiple notifications at once and they should provide more details and interactivity (focusing on the target country on mouse click). The game still contains some bugs: popping up modal dialogs of events during a battle does not always pause the time but prevents mouse click on the timer, which prevents battle control, being a major issue. My initially negative review: " The idea of this game is awesome, but the implementation of the gameplay is awful. The gameplay is extremely slow and boring, especially formation of blocks (alliances) and research of new tech. The technology trees are grouped into several categories wisely (industry, economy, etc.), but the actual policies in each tree could be crafted better with less repetitive names. Also, there is no search bar in the technology tree to find required items fast instead of wasting time to observe those trees in each category. The controls is one of the worst aspects of this game. There are no keyboard shortcuts to start and stop time. Everything should be controlled by mouse clicks exclusively, which wastes player's time, being annoying (moving mouse pointer from the timer control in the top right corner to the confirmation button of the popping up events located in the center of the screen). Thus, the UIX is really bad. And the worst part in this game is the game logic, where you gain the most benefits from the randomly occurred tasks (e.g., start war with country X or implement technology Y, which is not aligned with the player intentions and strategy in most cases). So, I love the idea of this game, but cannot recommend this implementation (Realpilitics 1) to anyone. Moreover, I tried also Realpolitiks 2, which has pretty different GUI, and cannot recommend it as well. It demands much more hardware resources for 3D visualizations, which only slow down the gameplay even further besides representing new bugs (the game starts, drawing itself in the fullscreen on the 1/4 part of the actual screen space of 4K display in Linux Ubuntu when the fractional scaling is enabled). Switching to windowed mode makes the game playable, but does affect the awful UIX lacking keyboard-based control and boring gameplay that lacks a proper game tutorial. Overall, Realpolitics is the worst grand strategy game I have ever played. Don't loose your time for it. " So, actually, the game is awesome, but it should be refined by the developer in multiple aspects to gain "production level" and very positive reviews. The lack of proper gameplay description and tutorials, and UIX issues are the major aspects that cause negative reviews. Ideally, this game should be open-source to be easy extendable by the users. Then, the outlined issues would be fixed very fast, and the game would become extremely popular with super positive reviews!
