Year after year, these developers have molded this one into a gem of a train game. Set into the 1800's, we perform a mix of route planning and delivery skill to earn the ability to purchase a generation of locomotives. The variety of cargo and the needs to access them provide a long playing game that is likely to plateau when access to the final cargo has been achieved. The online game-play is a key to its extended longevity as helping others to achieve their goals is enjoyable too. The growth of the game is likely to relent; additional engines, cars, cargo, structures and terrain mods should be the future. Hoping for a community workshop too.

I seriously can't get enough of this game. I love the way it looks and plays and like I'm actually in the world I create. Reminds me so much when when I would play with my toy trains as a kid and now I can do that as an adult and I love it!

If you like American Railroading and Railroading in general in the steam era but don't enjoy train games which require a lot thinking to drive(run) the locomotives and manage the logistics ii.e. (a less realistic experience), then I do recommend you give this game a try. Even if you do enjoy more realistic railroading gameplay do consider possibly giving it a a shot. ALTHOUGH, I do not confidently outright recommend this game (i.e. I don't 100% recommend it) due to its bugs, glitchs or quirky gameplay features which are frustrating/annoying -- so do also note if you don't have a high tolerance for these things you may want to consider avoiding this game. In all this is a train Sandbox w/ the option of being multiplayer or singleplayer thats quite enjoyablee to play but with some frustrating flaws. To summarize the pros: -the locomotive/train driving(running) feels very satisfying and enjoyable. -very satisfying deliverng and transporting goods between industries -easy/intuitive to construct track (you can get as complicated as you'd like. -lots of settings to make the game harder or easier and even what time of day it is, etc. -a decent selection of different facilities you can place and even props (e.g. different buildings, boxs, etc) -good looking models for the most part The cons: -Quirky/odd gameplay features and quite a few unintended features. Outright buggy at times. -Low customiization in terms of paint schemes, text on cars, etc. (plenty of variety just not much customization) -Still some Performance issues with Multiplayer -Questionable future developing path (i.e. how much monetization including(DLCs), console release, etc) -Development generally seemlying focused on features over improvements.

Pros: - Easy to control engines, and gives the player the choice to control the engine either through their UI, or the actual engine controls themselves (levers and valves located in the cabs) - Lots of customization options for the engines letting you kind of pick themes for your railway - Newly added props making for some awesome decoration options - You can now re-place your industries if you don't like where they spawned, or have a different idea for your track layout. - Game gets (sometimes)frequent updates with bug fixes and new additions Cons: - There is NO third person for track laying meaning you have to do it all in first person, which sometimes makes me want to scream into a pillow - Placing things straight can get confusing and difficult (again, no third person option to place things) - Not a con, but I wish there was a "creative" mode where you could have the option to be "flying" above the map to place track. It would make it SO much easier to place things down and kind of see how you want your track to look as you make it instead of having to manually walk/run/teleport around to see your track.

This review comes after playing 240.7 hours and connecting / operating all the industries which includes the most recent update with the cattle farm and meat packing plant. I will start with the cons understanding this is an early access game and things will change. Con #1: My first and only dislike is this game is not playable without internet connection. If I had known this before I purchased RRO I would have purchased Railroader first. Having an offline mode is essential, especially when one lives in an area known to have bad weather or mediocre internet service. IMO This is something the Devs need to take care of ASAP. From a consumer's view I purchased this game and should be able to play it regardless of my availability to the internet unless the game is a pure MMO with dedicated servers. Con#2: The menu system and object handlers need an over haul. If you select an object such as a train, car, industry, or any of the props you have to restart from the beginning of the menu list. I find this to be extremely tedious especially when placing props because you have to re-adjust the positions every time you add one. When playing from a first person view the controls of the train and industry levers don't always line up even when the control is highlighted nothing happens when you try to move it. You must be at a specific position to operate these objects which can be difficult since you will be moving around inside and outside the cab. Con#3: No free roaming view for operation of trains or building lines. I've had a few moments of frustration while unloading / loading, and laying down tracks without this feature included... It needs to be included. Con#4: Industry balancing. This mainly pertains to the most recent update with the wheat farm, cattle, farm, and meat packing plant. I was excited about this initially but it takes forever to load water, seeds are somewhat faster and you need 6 whole cows to make 12 cans of meat. On top of that the pay off is mediocre at best especially with the high prices of the freight cars needed to operate from these industries. I feel this update was rushed without much thought and is my least favorite industry(s) to service. With that out of the way lets dive into the Pros. Pro#1: If you like operating trains, logistics, and laying track this game is going to be totally addicting. It's somewhat like Derail Valley but you provide the track and means to get your trains where they need to go. As far as I know this is the only game that has this feature, and you can build upon it as much as you like. Pro#2: The graphics and sounds are great and do not require a super high end graphic card. This makes the game very immersive especially when watching and hearing the mechanics of the steam locos and industries or observing industries, towns, and tracks at a distance. Pro#3: You can play this with friends! Having a player with you to conduct or operate a train works very well and speeds up the time needed to load / unload and operate track switches. It's also enjoyable to have a fellow rail enthusiast at your side. Unlike Trainz where multiplayer is a useless feature imo, multiplayer is essential with RRO. Pro#4: There is a decent selection of narrow gauge steam engines and freight cars to maintain interest in the game. I really like how the devs included the history for each loco and livery available. My favorite feature is seeing the cargo inside the train after being loaded. Pro#5: As a host you can set industries where ever you want creating your own unique layout. It's like having all the pieces of a physical train set and you can do what ever you want. Create a huge shunting yard, or a long scenic route or both. Beautiful! Overall I totally recommend this game if you are into operating trains, logistics, laying track, and doing it all with friends. RRO utilizes steam narrow gauge engines, which happens to be my favorite type of steam engine. So a big plus for that. Patience is required since this game is early access and there is much work needed to be done, yet this simulation is very promising. Overall the devs have done a good job.
