Maybe I'll write mote later, but I'm in a weird mood right now and doing my best to avoid the very real pile of actual work in front of me. I got this bad boy on disk, the store listing here says Halloween of 1998 and that sounds about right to me. I'm sure the nostalgia is talking (or shouting like a baboon) but I think this is the best game in the tycoon genre I have ever played. Ever. Nothing has compared since and in my 25 years of playing, there's still something new, something to keep me coming back. If attesting to the quarter century I've spent with this game isn't enough, here's two more things: The stock market mechanic is really great. I think that combined with a high level approach to management (who needs to worry about designing a complex signal system, I've got guys who will do that if I tell them to) have made this the only game where I feel like I'm running a railroad and not solving a routing and logistics puzzle game... even though I like those, too and that is part of running a railroad. Still, this helps you sit in the big chair. Sure, by my time count, I haven't spent much time here, but my old disk? That looks like a dog chewed it. I won't say much out of fear of doxxing myself in a public Steam review, but this game and a few others presented to me at the exact right (wrong?) age have colored my professional life and personal interests in ways that I cannot describe. All I can do is thank the people who purchased them before before I had my own money. In summary: Play with trains, sit in the big chair.

One of the best games of all time. It's so simple yet so brilliant. Move items X to A city. City A makes Y items. Move Y from city A to city B. City B has a building that uses Y to makes items Z. Move Z back to city A. Then use the profits to buy all of the buildings in the entire process. Continue expanding until you have a virtual monopoly and start buying out competitors. Eventually, you'll grow so big and get so rich, you can break the law without repercussion, buy elections, become president, and even dismantle democracies using the same laws meant to protect them! It's the perfect capitalist simulator! Hey, wait a second... Okay, maybe I got carried away there, but still, it's a great game.

Got this game a while back to enjoy the nostalgia with my dad that we had for this game. Do not let the retro graphics fool you, this game has quite the depth when it comes to running your company ( if you wish, you can also tone down the difficulty by simplifying the mechanics when you start a scenario). Some aspects include the Stock market, your personal wealth, buying other stocks, bonds, margins, dividends, investors, buying businesses on the map. Oh and of course, supply and demand. This game despite being 27 years old holds up very well today, and can teach you a thing or two about finances and the market. Great soundtrack too and even has old vintage clips of the old railroad industry, along with old vintage clips/gifs that play in your little icon box when you click on a button to do something like build more tracks or purchase trains.

RT2 and RT3 remain my favourite all-time games. I come back to them for a full playthrough every few years, and I'm still amazed at how much they get right that so many transport tycoon games today STILL get wrong. It supports a variety of play styles, intense or casual, whether you want to mess with the stock market and conduct hostile takeovers of your competitors, meticulously customize every aspect of your rail network, or make a fortune building and acquiring industry. The GUI is intuitive, the economy is responsive, and don't let the old school graphics fool you, because the gameplay is wonderfully immersive. Your stock will split 3 for 1 and financial markets will applaud.
