Railbound was an absolute joy to play. As someone who loves solving puzzles, I found its challenges both engaging and extremely satisfying. What really stood out to me, though, was the game’s charm - beautifully crafted with cozy visuals and a kindhearted story that gently unfolds as you progress. There’s something so calming about piecing together tracks while enjoying the cheerful soundtrack and whimsical art. For me, Railbound was the perfect escape: a relaxing yet rewarding experience that I didn’t want to end. If you love puzzles or just need a bit of joy in your day, I can’t recommend it enough!

This puzzle game blows your mind. A littlebit too sensitive controls on the steam deck, but after a little time you can get used to it.

While puzzles start off as being mappable and solvable in your mind, it later becomes a matter of laying down tracks and making small adjustments to see what works via trial and error. Basically, it becomes more of a process of elimination as you progress through the game. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and I managed to get through half the game using this this method. ...but then I get to world 6, and the tracks get peppered with multiple switches that cause tracks to flip directions every time carts pass over them, and this becomes a major mind f*ck, so much so that it becomes less about puzzle solving, and more about taking wild stabs and hoping that I stumbled into a solution. Because of this, I kinda wished the puzzles had a bit more flexibility in the way they could be solved, instead of restricting solutions to only 1 or 2 possibilities. So even though there are 12 worlds to play through, expect to only really play through half of them on your own effort, unless you're some elite level chess player who can truly map out every sequence that takes place. Another slight complaint I have is that I wished the orientation could be adjustable, because I found myself either tilting my head or the handheld in order to better visualize the puzzles. Overall, Railbound is a great game to play for those short on time or simply looking for something chill. But make no mistake, the difficulty tag is definitely an understatement. PS: Review is mostly based off my Switch playthrough

I noticed a lot of the reviews for this game (particularly negative reviews) commented that it descends into trial and error. I would like to push back on that. It is true that you need to put pieces out on the board to solve the puzzles. Doing it your head would be a bit masochistic, to my mind, unless you're a champion chess player who's used to mapping out visual fields in your imagination. But putting pieces down on the board to see what happens isn't necessarily trial and error. Once the pieces are down, if you only change things randomly to see if you solve the puzzle, THAT is trial and error. But I am completing these puzzles not by randomly changing things but by tweaking elements of the puzzle after carefully observing what went wrong and devising a strategy to correct it, often by learning how certain shapes can be deployed to create certain types on movement. For instance, learning how to creatively place 4 track loops to reverse a train on its course travelling one way, while letting it pass directly over passing the other, is a key to many puzzles. That is not 'trial and error', that is iterative design. I am still only a quarter through the game, but I feel like I can see the rhythm of things, and I am passing all the A, B and C puzzles without trouble using this method. You don't seem to need to resort to trial and error, IMHO.

It's very cute, and there are many puzzles, but be warned that the puzzles here are quite difficult. After the first few worlds, I find myself twiddling an extremely chaotic systems of switches to get the timing between your train cars *juuust* right to solve the puzzle. Maybe if you are galaxy brained you can see all the way to the solution from the initial conditions, but for those of us who are mere mortals it is more a process of laying out some tracks and observing results, then flipping tracks here and there to hopefully, eventually get to the solution, which feels less satisfying than having an insight from the start and working through the details. I found that the developer's earlier puzzle game, Golf Peaks, which was somewhat easier, was more satisfying for me to actually solve, so maybe check that out first unless you are hard puzzle game superfan or really into the train theme. Despite my criticism, I can't bring myself to give the game a negative review, as there is clearly a lot of care and craft that went into this, though now you have been warned what you are getting yourself into.
