"Real world thing but we pasted on a Roguelike" is the hotness right now. Balatro did it for Poker, Luck Be A Landlord did it for a slot machine, Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers did it for blackjack, Peglin did it for pachinko. Now comes Rack & Slay, which does it for pool/billiards. And it works dang well! It's a shorter run-time than many of it's competitors, but that works in it's favor. Challenge is set fairly easy out of the gate, but a couple hours in I'm hitting challenging difficulties after clearing the easier difficulties - on that note, each run lets you select a 0-20 difficulty level (with the higher levels gated behind successful completions of the easier levels) - I found that the levels available out of the box to be comically easy, but once I hit the mid-teens, it got hard and required me to play smart if I wanted to succeed.

Rack and Slay is a light, low challenge Rogue-Like. It runs smoothly with no glitches. You see everything the game has to offer in a relatively short time frame, but at this price there is nothing to complain about. Some reviewers complain about unreachable targets, but I only experienced this if I didn't plan ahead a shot or two. If you have the skill (there is a slight learning curve) then even the highest levels are beatable. The challenge is moderate at most.

A Billiards rogue-like that is a fascinating surprise. It's also an intriguing, head-scratching combo I haven't seen since maybe Rollers of the Realm. It works though. You have a health bar, a limited amount of shots, and you eliminate enemies by knocking them into holes, or spiking them (a few disappear if you touch them). However many are left when you run out of shots deal damage to you and if you scratch, you take 1 damage. It's been a lot of fun thus far and it's reminded me that though I haven't played Pool in a while irl that I had a tendancy to scratch often. I'm still early in my playtime but I noticed it seems to be a bit more forgiving (at least early on) as it seems easy to heal as long as you don't take too much damage too quickly. I haven't gone beyond level 10 yet so that may change. There seems to be a decent variation in enemy type and thankfully hovering over them shows all their info. It's easy to learn, hard to master, and you can play with just your mouse!

Do you like quick games, with plenty of chaos, randomness, simple controls? If so, this is perfect for you! 90's style pool game controls and physics with game changing bonuses and balls fighting back against you. Like Brotato, this game saves when you enter a shop, so if you literally have 3 minutes spare you can pick this game up for a quick blast. Hours of content, bonus challenge modes, achievements and unlockables for a bargain price. One thing I think could improve this game is to have an action replay mode. Some shots are so quick and chaotic I never quite know what's going on. To have a slow mo replay, or the ability to save and share replays would be brilliant. Well worth a buy. Really fun game. It is what you see and expect, but my fave elements: Polish and physics are really impressive, even for a “basic” game. Everything works exactly how I would expect it to, and it is very smooth. Plenty of “character.” Once you learn what the enemy balls do and how they react, you immediately start planning in your head. The best thing. A roguelike with options for shorter games?! Thank. You. Devs. I can knock out a single round “Raid” in ~5 minutes while I sit in bed and it still counts towards progress and achievements. Definitely recommend for any fans of physics games, roguelikes, or casual/puzzle games. *When do we get collectible hats and masks for our hero?!*
