Ive been playing this game quite a bit, and I enjoy the gameplay and the creation system! Its really expandable, and you can make quite a few puzzles and rooms out of it. As a HUGE Game design nerd I love level designer games, however I found some things slightly lacking. While I still reccomend this game, there are some things I wish I could do, which ill list here. - Music Control: You cant really control what song is playing in what room. Theres only a few songs, but you dont have any control over whether which themes songs are playing where. What if I want a combat theme to play in a room full of traps? What if I want a specific theme from another biome to play for a boss fight? Little things like that would go a long way. - A search function: I often find myself flipping through menu to menu to try to find one specific object.. a search bar in the maker mode menu would be SO INCREDIBLY helpful for finding something I can only remember the name of. - Enemy Control: Dont get me wrong, enemy variety and behavior are great! Theres alot to work with here! but I kind of wish we could play with a bit more than the movement and variants of enemies. I think it'd be neat to be able to change their size, health, and damage for example, so you could make a mini-boss out of a bigger, stronger enemy! - "Themes": While I apperciate the ability to use these many unique themes and decorations.. being locked to one at a time I feel is a little outdated. If people want to stick to 1 theme, thats cool! But I think a option to make a dungeon thats multi-themed would be cool. You could make a whole campaign out of various themes, maybe with outdoor areas (if they plan to add those) to facilitate the transitions! But besides my gripes that these things are lacking, this game is good. I enjoy the state its in now! Theres lots of themes to play with, many mechanics to explore, and I havent even finished making my first dungeon yet beacause ive had so much fun thinking up of puzzles! If you enjoy classic-topdown Zelda games, im sure you'll also find playing the dungeons quite alot of fun! The Devs are also planning to make a Singleplayer campaign with the same tools avaliable in the game, so there seems to only be room to grow for Quest Master! I hope they keep it up! :D

Indie Does what Nintendon't If you've played the Link's Awakening remake on Switch, you know that part of 100% completion was to gather Chamber Stones and make your own Chamber Dungeons. This was kind of a testing ground for Nintendo to see if they could make a Zelda maker. The way it worked though is that you didn't have complete control on how to make your own dungeon as all the chambers were from Link's Awakening specifically. You could only change the layouts. Plus there was no way to share these "creations" online; you could only share them locally through Amiibo, or as I like to call it, another paywall. About a couple years ago, there was an Indie game released called Super Dungeon Maker that was able to do what Nintendo couldn't and let us make proper Zelda dungeons. It was an early access game with many updates planned, but unfortunately because the company making the game was focused on other projects, none of those updates came to fruition. Plus the game is still incredibly buggy, especially on Switch. Here's where Quest Master finally comes in. Like Super Dungeon Maker, this game let's you create proper Zelda dungeons but with a TON of customization options. Want to have a flying switch? You can do that. Want to have Switches in Minecarts? You can do that. This game is constantly getting updated. Plus the sprite artwork is amazing; it took a lot of inspiration from The Minish Cap. The music is pretty good too. This game is currently in Early Access with a full release planned in Spring of 2025. It will have its own Story mode as well as an expanded hub with mini-games/side-quests.Plus after the game comes out of early access, the developers are planning to continue supporting the game through new content as well as possibly bringing the game to Switch. The developers have put a lot of love and effort into this project; they are working to fix any bugs that are reported through the Discord server. The amount of care they have for this game shows in what we have right now and I am very looking forward to the full release. Super Dungeon Maker was a good attempt, but if you ask me, Quest Master is a much better choice.

It's infuriating to me that this game manages to be better than any other Zelda like I've ever played, but then chained itself to being a level builder. I've played a lot of other Zelda likes, and they almost all closely follow after A Link to the Past, whereas this clearly is pulling from Minish Cap/Four Swords, and it just feels significantly better as a result. I really hope this gets some kind of single player on top of user generated content, because this game deserves more than just dungeons Now that said, the dungeon maker itself is super competent. Decent variety, lots of options etc. The only thing I'd really like to see is some kind of meta challenge to encourage clearing dungeons beyond just messing around with the game. I like extrinsic motivation in games, and something akin to the 100 mario challenge would go a long way in keeping my interest long term. Overall, this early access is great, and I can't wait to see what it turns into Edit: literally as soon as I posted this review I saw that they have a single player campaign on the way. So it's basically everything I ever wanted out of an indie zelda. 10/10

The "Zelda Maker" you're waiting for Quest Master is just fantastic. I don't mean to put other games down, but it is leagues ahead of other "maker" games like Super Dungeon Maker. It's not even close. Let's start with the gameplay itself: The controls are tight and very enjoyable. There's a good variety of enemies and items, and a ton of creative ways to use many of them. There's some you will expect like a boomerang and grappling hook, but quite a bit of unique ones like a wand that creates tornados which shoot you upwards, or a ghost lantern that shows invisible objects around you. Dungeons can have multiple floors and there's so much you can do with it like being able to see floors below you and fall down to them assuming the level creator lets you. There's also a detailed map that automatically updates the more you explore, with teleporters to move around easily - encouraging huge levels and exploration without feeling lost! One thing that surprised me is that there's some meta progression to Quest Master, there are rings you gain over time that grant you small bonuses when playing levels, and NPCs that visit the town at certain times to play small minigames. Pretty fun! The production quality is S-tier as you can probably guess. Art, music, and sound effects are lovely and full of detail. It's obviously... Inspired... But there's a great amount of unique themes that it never feels like just a Zelda clone. If you're here for the level maker, rest easy. It's awesome. It's very easy to use and has powerful mechanics like signals and conditionals to trigger events whenever you do something, whether that be solving a puzzle or opening a chest or killing an enemy, etc... TL;DR The game is fun. The community, while small, is creating TONS of quality levels with huge amounts of variety. Whether you're here just to play levels or make them, Quest Master is one of the best maker games out there, even in early access. Buy it!

My experience so far is that this is basically "Zelda" Mario Maker, for better or worse. If you didn't like Mario Maker, you're probably not going to enjoy this. I personally wasn't a fan of Mario Maker after the first week of its release due to the insane number of troll and kaizo-esque levels that ultimately became the norm. The dungeons that I've encountered in this game are largely following the same pattern. 2 gimmicks that I see repeated over and over are 1) entire rooms filled with trap doors with no discernible hints on how to find the correct path through them without trying every single tile and 2) almost room sized "walk on a tile once" puzzles. Neither of these are fun, but they're such a recurring theme. Dungeons that allow you to control more than 1 character are also not that great. I find that the pathing for my additional party members tends to get messed up and they just stop moving or they'll constantly get stuck in loops where they just keep falling into pits/lava/poison/etc. I think this is a game for people that enjoy Link to the Past randomizers and kaizo-like Mario Maker levels. I think most everyone else will find it frustrating or not enjoyable. With that said, there is a "Trending" tab in the dungeon selector when you're looking for a dungeon to play through that does a good job of filtering out a lot of the most poorly designed dungeons. The ones in the trending list are dungeons that people have actually been able to complete and have seemed to be more on par with traditional 2D Zelda dungeons with added difficulty.
