omg. what the fuck/. kagiha's ending was INSANE. WHAT WAS THAT. WHO WROTE THAT???? DID THEY WANT TO SHATTER ME INTO A THOUSAND PIECES??? WHAT WAS THAT!!! i will never recover. i am so upset. man if you can get past the misogyny these endings will destroy you emotionally and steal your lunch money. it starts slow and it was hard to get into but yikes i dont remember the last time i was hurt this much. i might be a softie but OOF. OW. i will say, if you want to buy, definitely get on sale like i did. its hardly worth the full price.

A game that combines Amnesia: Memories, Diabolik Lovers and Orange and ultimately is for fans of friendship-heavy stories that deal with grief as well as for fans who enjoy Goth-like vibes. This game lacks in romance but unlike 7’Scarlet, it doesn’t really raise expectations for larger-than-life love stories that are fated and make the love interests say “aishiteru” after a week or so (yes, that happens in 7S). At the end of several routes in PotBB, the characters are starting to date and are like “I don’t plan on leaving you in the future but let’s just see what happens”. I really appreciate this more level-headed, more realistic approach to romance. CWs (that I noticed): child death, grief, trauma, self-deprecation; sexual harassment by love interests ( Karasuba’s & Hikage’s route ), romance with child-coded/mentally-child characters ( Kagiha’s & Monshiro’s route ), nagging ( Hikage’s route ), undertones of abuse ( Karasuba’s & Hikage’s route ), depiction of & talk about suicide ( Hikage’s route ), conservative gender roles ( esp. Kagiha ending ), misgendering of POV character ( Karasuba’s route )

Wow. Albeit not without flaws, Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly may be in my top 3 games ever. I got and first played this game 5 months ago, played all but one ending in the span of a week, and then procrastinated finishing it because I didn't want it to end. I have since 100% it, and in the past 5 months I have continued thinking about it an embarrassing amount. This game has such rich and emotional storytelling that, it has, admittedly, made me both gnaw my arm and lie face down on the ground in response to many scenes and events, even long after first playing them. This is a must-play for all visual novel fans, in my opinion. If you're looking for a difficult game with complicated mechanics or a highly romance-focused otome, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a story about grief, guilt, and how to move on, please, please check this game out. My Pros: -Well designed timeline flowchart-- this is SO useful for getting the different endings, and makes understanding the flow of the game so much easier. POTBB has spoiled me for other multiple ending games with its ease of endings access. -Voice acted protag! Lots of visual novels leave this out and I was so excited to see that Beniyuri can actually speak-- brought me into the story a lot more -The art. I love so much about the art style: the backgrounds are gorgeous, the sprites are great (see con 1, however...), and the style of clothing is so unique and unmatched by any other visual novel. -The music is great! -The story. It's great. It's sad, it's inspiring, it's funny, all of it. -Guys I actually love the short stories. I think that they give great character and relationship building opportunities while keeping the flow of the main game smooth.Yes, you have to watch a certain amount to proceed, but it never felt like a chore to me, just a wonderful peek into the more mundane, human parts of an otherwise grand and philosophical game. My Cons: -Yeah, the anatomy is a bit wonky at times. However, it reminds me of 2000s anime which in turn makes it charming imo ^^ -Karasuba is rlly creepy at times!! You gotta put on your rose tinted glasses for his endings... -Sometimes a little misogynistic (never to the point where I quit, just enough for me to furrow my brow)

CW: Child death/death, grief, gun violence, bullying, medical content + comas, suicide, violating consent, childhood abuse, illness, blood Tropes: childhood best friends, amnesia, there's some blurred consent * forcing the protagonist to share a bed * almost kissing the protagonist when shes sleeping * pushing her against the wall * almost kissing as a joke Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly is a more mid-tier visual novel but I do praise its darker storyline. Romance does take a backseat to the trauma and overarching plot of the game, which is unusual against a backdrop of many fantastical and light-hearted visual novels. Five people awaken in a mysterious mansion, assailed by monsters and lacking their memories. Suddenly rescued by a man in a mask, they escape into the inner sanctum of the manor with a single shining crystal shard and are told to find all the pieces of a kaleidoscope to escape. The five characters each must work together to collect shards from the monsters whilst receiving text messages about their past and photos about each other. While I didn't like the protagonist - quite passive and clumsy/weak (mostly letting the story happen to her, being really indecisive in her choices, and also mostly responding with um/ah to a lot of dialogue) - I liked most of the male LIs. Karasuba was my favouirite - his storyline with Yamato and Beniyuri is very meaningful and moving. The three friends, in different places of their grief journey, express themselves differently and value different things in their storylines. I just loved how it all came out in the Real World storyline, just was a genuinely enjoyable experience and a major shock. Starting the game with Kagiha was ideal as he is the big-brother/childhood friend LI who is largely milquetoast and reveals a lot of the story that contributes greatly to the rest of the paths. Monshiro was also a really great path and Hikage's was interesting with so much backstory revealed around the setting and the clues in the manor. I thought the art was decent, it is a bit dated and has poor anatomy, but Monshiro's CGs were particularly beautiful and the kiss scenes were decent throughout the paths. I didn't care much for the music and am more of a reader than a listener (to voiced lines). I also really dislike high-voiced anime protagonists so I should've played Beniyuri muted, but the actors all do a decent job. They do that funny scream thing that Japanese VAs do where they don't scream enough to destroy a microphone but its more of a choked sob. I liked the FFWd and Flowchart systems - they were so great for powering through and jumping around the story. There are some semi-related side stories that unlock the true endings and contribute to the backstories more - you unlock them with points gained from the butterfly shooting mini-game. It's a bit more interactive than other VNs. Whilst the characters don't have much animation and the CGs are mostly one image, I did like how characters move around the screen in certain scenes. This game does have a few dropped letters and typos that are mostly towards the ends of the paths (like someone skipped proofreading it!) but it's a cut above other ported VNs. I had a good time with Psychedelica 1 and recommend a purchase on sale. I played for about 11 hours, a bit of it was left idling.
