Spawn, die. Spawn, kill 10 zombies, die. Spawn, kill zombies, find a car, crash and die. Spawn, kill zombies, find a car, build a base, get guns, kill more zombies, die from alerting the entire town. Spawn, kill zombies, find a car, build a base, get guns, kill more zombies, die of "insert incompetent moment here". After all the time spent on this game, it's safe to say you'll probably die from a dumb mistake you made because you thought those 2k hours made you a better player, but we're all just surviving, one second at a time.

I had spent three days preparing. The car was loaded up with spare water, ammo, a first aid kit and some non perishable food. The car itself was only half full of gas and was frankly not looking in great shape after the beating it had taken on my last supply run, but it should get me there and back. Hopefully. Otherwise I was travelling as light as possible with just my shotgun, a brace of pistols and spare ammo plus my trusty machete. The generator at home was full, the crops were watered and I had cleared the wandering zeds around the perimeter. As a rare indulgence I had baked two loaves of homemade bread so had made some sandwiches to eat on the way there. I couldnt help but smile - making a packed lunch for the apocalypse. My target - the "Hit Vids" VHS store in March Ridge. Months of isolation makes you crave for some sort of company and the dead really arent much for conversation. Watching some films would be a welcome relief and a brief moment of normality at the end of the world. I arrived at the outskirts of town around midday and noticed a boarded up house I had intended to search last time I was here but never got round to investigating. It was early so I stopped the car and quietly dispatched the few wandering zombies with my machete. No point advertising my presence just yet. After removing the barricades on a window I found the bodies of a couple who had plainly decided to take their own lives instead of letting the zombie horde do it. Cant say I blamed them. One box of ammo was my reward for desecrating their tomb. I parked a couple of blocks away from the video store at around 230pm and then made my way on foot. Pretty quiet with not many zombies on the street so I was still avoiding using guns. On arriving I found the store was untouched. Rows and rows of films and documentarys. Thankfully VHS tapes dont weigh a lot so without even checking what I was taking I started shovelling them into my backpack. And then a smash from the window. I had been noticed. I raised my shotgun... 15 hours later. I had slept for 2 hours on the floor of the video stores toilet. The shop itself is littered with the dead. The parking lot outside is more bodies than tarmac. I am literally covered from head to toe in blood. Mercifully most of it isnt mine. Around midnight I actually had to make a run for it - the ever advancing waves of undead were threatening to overwhelm me in the tight confines of the VHS store. Having pulled the horde behind me I had been able to duck through some houses to lose them and then return to the video store with exhaustion overtaking me, allowing me to eat my sandwiches and sleep in the toilet. 1pm , I am slowly making my way back to my car, backpack bulging with video tapes. It had taken over a day but at least now I had something to make me smile at the end of the world. All it had cost was hundreds of rounds of shotgun and pistol ammo and the fraying of my nerves fighting zombies in the middle of the night when the only light source you have is the muzzle flash of your gun. _______________ Honestly, I could recount so many tales like the above (I remember the above adventure as "The Battle of Blockbusters"). The game is a sandbox so you make your own stories. The world just exists and is the star of the show - its not there to give you an easy time. It will try and kill you at every turn. But it creates the best stories. I have had more memorable moments (and deaths) in Zomboid than in any game Ive ever played with a scripted story. Its not for everyone. I get that. Also there is the ongoing discontent about the wait for the next update (personally im not that bothered - if they released the current version tomorrow as a finished game it would still be a classic of the genre). Its a testament to the quality of the game that even now, after my wall of text review that im thinking of other things I should and could mention. Suffice to say - its good. If you enjoy the genre or sandbox games or both then you wont be disappointed.

After 400+ game hours, I survived until winter. At least I learned the following real life lessons: - tomorrow will be an another day. - know your limits. - don't get ambitious. - the term 'too late' is real. - no, you are hungry, tired, anxious, and injured. Leave those 3 zombies alone. A game where there is one outcome: lose. A game where the zombies are just minor enemies, the ultimate boss is your weakness, your bad decision. A game where you can see hordes. A game where you spend 400 hours, and still have no clue how to handle a gun. A game where you neglect a flat tire, and die. I love it. All the rage quits invite me for an another game where you will be 0.05% better than yesterday.
