Underrated, well-paced retro shooter with enough unique mechanics, weapons and enemies to keep it interesting all the way through. Can be frustrating and confusing at times, but those moments are few and far between. Definitely worth playing for all fans of boomslop gaming.

This is an interesting FPS, both for what is doing now and for what it did when it was released oodles of years ago. Its funny to me how you have tons of shooters trying to replicate the feel of these old-skool titles, and yet playing through this has been much more fun than modern titles like Prodeus. At its core its just another bit of shooty-shooty-bang-bang, and fundamentally this isn't doing anything revolutionary in that regard. However this goes one step further than most and introduces a puzzle / platforming element through special abilities that gate your progress, such as a metroidvania would. Consequently the levels have trickier layouts and elements that will require back-tracking, as you gain the means to head further into previously impassable areas. This makes it somewhat less straight-forward than typical games in the genre, and combined with the hi-octane action it adds up to a far more involving experience than the rather simplistic likes of Boltgun. As I said before: it's a funny bit of commentary on modern development, albeit a bit of a shame as well, that whilst many indies are flashier than this, they still lack anywhere near the substance. Their action gets boring after a while, but this remains fun throughout with challenging enemies and sneaky design. Traps will flare up, or enemies will appear from hidden alcoves, and it keeps you on your toes. Weapons range from actual hardware such as pistols and a heavy machine-gun, to supernatural items that blast out homing projectiles, or ones that have ricocheting ammo. Given that environments can have tight corridors its always nice to be able to stand around a corner and whittle down the opposition, or to be on a lower level taking them out with a weapon you can shoot up into the sky and it will fly to their position. I would say that it doesn't look amazing, but given that many modern titles are trying to ape primitive graphics...well....I guess that isn't a problem. The sound effects are punchy, the music can be quite pleasant, and unlike many shooters there's a modicum of story to it all. At its worst its a fun time, whereas at its best you have to ask why there don't seem to be many, if any, doing what this did years ago. Compared to titles that aren't twenty to thirty years old, I'd say only Amid Evil captures the retro feel that is inherent here whilst having the more involved level design that makes this game still stand out. DOOM Eternal is another one, but that is a rare example of a recent title really pushing beyond what was capable back in the day, and given the relative complexity of its action, its not really the "retro" DOOM experience anymore. The amusing thing about that is Powerslave was the DOOM Eternal of its time, as platforming and environmental challenges did make this the next step in FPS design. I guess that any other titles trying to ape this did a piss-poor job of it, because this type of game-play certainly wasn't the trend back in the day, and nor is it even now. Which is weird, because Powerslave is excellent and a breath of fresh air in the landscape of repetitive uninspired shooters that seem to release in their dozens daily. Great game!

I forgot how much fun Exhumed was back on the Saturn, but it never left my mind and now I'm grateful Night Dive Studios worked their magic on it. If you did not play this back in the day or if you are too young to remember the Playstation/Saturn/N64 wars, I don't think you'll enjoy it. If you're old and want a blast from the past, I can definitely recommend Exhumed, it's still as much fun today as it was back then and the soundtrack is still great.

Powerslave suffered from having its best versions stuck on less than ideal consoles, which this remaster finally addresses along with adding the usual modern features you'd expect from good remasters. While its unconventional ammo system is clunky and it can be a bit of a slog navigating its levels, Powerslave's Metroidvania-esq design and progression was years ahead of its time, standing apart from other shooters and elevating its solid but unremarkable gameplay. The price tag is a bit much for how much content this remaster has though.

Yet another fantastic port by Nightdive, who at this point I am convinced can do no wrong. This time they've highlighted the very tragically overlooked classic PowerSlave, which combined everything you love about retro FPS games with some novel for the time metroidvania aspects. It still feels extremely fun to play today, and if you have any love for retro shooters, you'll love this game. This game actually reminds me quite a bit of the Doom 2 wads "The Golden Souls", which I would recommend to anyone reading this who has not as of yet played them. A great mix of platforming, exploration, and shooting tons of enemies. Levels in PowerSlave are nonlinear but not to the point of confusion, you always have a pretty good idea where you should be headed. Enemies are mostly variants of the typical boomer shooter enemy archetypes (homing fireball guys, regular fireball guys, annoying small enemies with weird hitboxes, etc), but the level design is what really sets this game apart.
