I've played quite a bit of Field of Glory 2 and had this game on my wishlist for a while now because the Thirty Years War interests me and now, while it was on sale, I finally bought it. I can imagine that a lot of people are put off by the steep learning curve and pretty high difficulty of this game, especially if you are not used to similar games, but I think that P&S might be even more addictive than FOG2 once you get a couple hours in. You have to get used to a couple game mechanics that seem a bit strange in the beginning, like your units choosing nearby primary attack targets which need to be attacked unless you move your unit to a different position, but overall the rules of the game are pretty logical. The constant barrage of gun salvos between your army and the enemy adds a layer of unpredictability and action to the game which isn't meant negatively. While in other games you can plan all your moves ahead, here you need to think twice before you move a unit because they might get shot at three seperate times and have their morale broken before you can move them again. The full price is pretty high but when it's on sale, you love difficult tactical games and are looking for a good game that covers the Thirty Years War then I can wholeheartedly recommend you this game.

Somehow more enjoyable than Field of Glory 1 and 2 - which are obviously more polished. Simpler to match my mediocre skills and providing substantial fun without a great intellectual investment.

Just a great game for anyone who likes horse and musket warfare - from skirmish to grand campaign. And none of the distractions that so many AGEoD games have, like research, diplomacy, etc. Just combat, handled pretty well. The AI is ok, but the game would be best against a human PBeM opponent. 10 Polish Lances Out of 10

I have had this game for about three days, and I have managed to sink a full 13 hours into it. This game is absolutely great, it is both simple enough to catch on quickly and complex enough to have tons of content to dig into. This game represents a massively underrated and important time period, the campaign mode is spectacular as well. The mechanics of logistics are just simple enough to not be brutally tedious, but also to make the act of raising armies be rewarding and making you feel smart. Battles are long and difficult, but after a hard engagement you almost never feel that you wasted time, even in defeat it is still extremely fun. My only small gripe is that of personal taste, I'm Russian and I think representing the incredibly brutal (and cool) Eastern front in the Great Turkish War. Peter The Great's capture of Azov and the like would be really cool. But that's just my personal opinion, if I have any advice for you, the reader, play this game. P.S. 40 bucks is a little much, but it's still worth it.

Pike and Shot Campaigns is a faithful depiction of a tabletop wargame which seeks to allow players a tactical glimpse into the battlefields of Europe, 1400-1700. During this period, muskets and pikes went hand in hand as different nations developed differing battle group techniques and formations, ranging from the Dutch use of lines to the Spanish Tercio. Pike and Shot is not graphically much to look at but if you are here for cinematic battles then you are in the wrong place. This is, and I say this as a trained historian of warfare of this period, a battle simulator. You are the commander and you have control. That control is not total, terrain and coherence of units is critical to success. Units will, if they suffer severe losses or see others routing, lose heart and rout themselves. However, the game does an excellent job of illustrating that pitched battles were messy affairs. Just because a unit might lose coherence and flee does not necessarily mean it is off the table. Given enough time and with enough of the army remaining, soldiers would often reform units if their numbers were sufficient and their officers tactful. Experienced soldiers and officers were key to reforming fleeing soldiers and returning them to the lines. The game can, at times, feel slow. Battles are methodical as you seek to position your units as best you can before engaging. Each turn can take quite a bit of time, especially as battle is joined, and this game requires patient attention. On top of the base game, there's a modest but impressive community who have created historical scenarios. I was surprised by the range of these battles and the inclusion of some less famous engagements - an indication of hardcore enthusiasts. The defence of the Scheldt in the 1690 campaign of the War of the Grand Alliance is one such example. There's also custom campaigns but the fictional map put me off of this. It would be better for the game to allow me to pick a geographical setting, say Scotland, and then to simulate a civil war using appropriate factions or to create a fictional scenario where a European army invade the country. There are campaigns to follow but these missions can be appropriately challenging, do not expect to win a battle like Edgehill as the Royalists easily. Overall, this is an excellent game if you are interested in the period and you enjoy tactical wargaming. The AI is decent to play against. I would advise picking it up on sale as there's a lack of support for the title and little community left beyond the user generated maps.
