This game is like if Touhou, Vampire Survivors and Yume Nikki collectively had a schizophrenic meltdown, listened to too much breakcore, then proceeded to collapse into themselves, and I ADORE it. I really cannot express how much I just love this game's art direction and overall style, amazing music & really fun gameplay for the short time I've put into it thus far; I can definitely say that it's very much worth the price and countless hours i'm going to put into it going forward !!!

Every other review has already covered the fact that this game is fantastic and the story is engaging. I haven't seen anyone mention how purely 'Video Game' this game is. If games are your passion, then Picayune Dreams is a small slice of heaven. If you look at the screenshots you'll see that absolutely everything is dressed up as a flattened 3D abstraction of an idea. Nothing is afforded any reason for existing, the goodies and treats available to you do not conform to an established setting. Sawblades and C4 coexist comfortably with angel wings and eyeball parasites. None of it is bogged down by blending in thematically, the only unifying element among the available items is that they're cool things. In the same way that Pacman eats fruits, keys, and bells to make 'score' go up, Cyl collects laser beams and yo-yos to make 'mortality' go up. Every time 'mortality' goes up by 5, you get to fight a vestige of someone who's turned into the only part of themselves they could hang onto. I like the first boss a lot because I think I'd end up like them if I were in their shoes. All of the humanity of this game is confined to bite-sized Yume Nikkis in between runs, and the antagonist endeavors to snuff it all out in a phantasmal video-gamey kaleidoscope. It's video games all the way down. Item descriptions are just summarized GML code. Cyl's actual XY coordinates and your current FPS are used as set dressing for the UI. It's the first time I've seen a game undress itself for the sake of decoration, and it's really charming. Picayune, you're making me blush, at least put some string()s on! There are a number of games that try to have a minimal arcade-like aesthetic, but most of them have a cohesive world that robs them of the surrealism they're chasing. You know how Adeleine is the only human being in Kirby, and none of the resident Waddling Heads ever question what her deal is? I love stuff like that. Sometimes I just want to be a weird little character, in a dream with too few connecting threads to make sense of. In Picayune I can just be an angel with laser beams. I get to blow up malicious hands and hamburgers. There is still a tangible setting buried underneath all of that, and it's worth experiencing! But it's a polite whisper compared to how loudly this game celebrates it's own medium. The story won't force you awake if you want to keep dreaming. Obviously games with a believable context aren't bad or anything, but games like this seldom appear anymore. I once got to play Aztarac on a genuine cabinet, and that was the closest thing in my life I could liken to a holy experience. Like tasting a food only angels are allowed to eat. I get the same kind of feeling playing Picayune, except this food was prepared based on the memory of the angel food. This feeling makes it the only game on Steam that should actually have the 'psychedelic' tag. If you love games, this is ambrosia. If Yume Nikki said anything to you, Picayune will sing to you. If you learned how to code as a kid because of GML, Picayune will hold you in a motherly embrace and make you feel warm and safe again. Every day of my life, I'm simply chasing the high I first felt at 5 years old with a controller in my hands. If you have that same itch, Picayune will scratch it in a way very few games can. (And if all of that sounds completely insane, you should still get the game anyways, I'm sure neurotypical people can enjoy it too!)

Very fun bullet hell / vampire survivor type game with a super interesting story hidden underneath. It's honestly worth 4x the price the dev is charging. A nice surprise and I recommend the title highly.

-It has a good story -Upgrades chosen appear on you physically -You can loop runs (yes with all your upgrades) -It has a talent tree system that you can swap around builds at will. -You always choose from 4 random areas to fight at the start and after a boss fight. (2 normal and 2 harder ones with more xp/enemies and a gimmick) -Boss fights are Touhou like -Bosses will remember you through runs -Music is S tier (imo) Out of all the horde survival games out there, this one really stood out the most to me with its uniqueness.
