This is a fantastic adventure platformer. The attention to detail in this game is tremendous, the physics and movement are very fun, and the soundtrack is beautiful. It's chock full of minigames, puzzles, and secrets. I'm on my fourth playthrough (the first 3 were on a different platform) and I'm still discovering new things I hadn't seen before. I can't recommend it enough. ABOUT THE COMBAT: I see way too many comments saying that the combat is bad. I disagree. The combat is challenging at first. You start with a bat that has a very limited range, and there's a slight delay with each swing that you have to account for, especially when performing aerial attacks. However, the timing isn't hard to learn, and most enemies have very predictable movement, so avoiding them and closing in to attack is pretty straight forward. There's a surprising amount of movement tech in this game, and learning how to use the roll in combat will help you avoid pretty much anything you can't jump over. If you're having trouble with it, the second town has a crossbow you can buy that can shoot in any direction so that should make things easier. If you're still struggling, the game also has 5 difficulty options that can be toggled in any combination to make the combat as easy or hard as you want. My first playthrough, I was pretty bad at the combat, so I played on easy to compensate. On subsequent playthroughs, I've set it harder to challenge myself and keep things interesting, but I found the game enjoyable on easier and harder difficulties alike. The one issue I have with the combat as designed is with the stamina system, which the devs got from Dark Souls, and I don't think it translates very well into a 2D platformer. The combat here is faster-paced and there's not a 3rd dimension that gives you room to avoid attacks without spending all your stamina. By default, normal bat attacks will consume stamina, which I feel slows the combat down without making it any more interesting. Fortunately, that part is optional, so I just turn that off and I'm fine. I would recommend trying the game at default difficulty just to see how it feels, but the difficulty options can be changed at any time from the menu, so feel free to tweak them if some aspect of the combat doesn't work for you. There's a lot of really fun stuff in this game, and I hate to see people get filtered by some quirk of the combat that they could have just switched off. OTHER THOUGHTS: -I played the original flash Phoenotopia years ago, and I was impressed by how solid a game that version was. PHO: Awakening has impressed me again with how much more has been added to the experience without it feeling bloated or directionless, and how much polish has been applied in every aspect of development to make the game feel better, look better, and sound better. -I love how the game's setting feels like typical fantasy at the start and warps into sci-fi by the end (as well as the detour through post-apocalyptic wasteland horror). The game taking place hundreds of years after the apocalypse makes the land and its history feel mysterious, and chasing that sense of mystery is often rewarded by uncovering the game's many hidden secrets. It's a very satisfying combination of flavor and gameplay reinforcing each other. It's Good Game Design. -If you don't talk to NPCs twice, you WILL miss some stuff! I noticed one recent review of the game mentioning a lack of signposting about side quests and such, and that's definitely not the case - but some NPCs don't give hints or accept quest items until the second time you speak to them, which is easy to miss if you're in a hurry. Some people like to check for extra NPC dialog in games, some people don't. NPCs in PHOA will point you towards sidequests, hidden game mechanics, secret areas - but only if you keep them talking! FINAL THOUGHTS: It's not a metroidvania, that's a different genre, people are coming into it with the wrong expectations

A platformer Zelda love letter which show great care in some aspects but is weirdly undercooked and sometimes even deeply flawed in others Generally speaking, I recommend it to people who want to try out something new. It's an interesting game but not a good metroidvania, due to boring combat and the general lack of QoL mechanics. I've loved it during the first ten hours of gameplay but then have grown rather bored of the battle system and the plot didn't really make me want to keep going. The lack of pointers where to go for sidequests and such didn't make it easier either. I've dropped it apparently during the final stretch of the game Pros: - fantastic soundtrack - fun dialogues - the game is generally kept in a humorous manner and as a result I often just checked out what each NPC I encountered had to say because it usually made me leave a chuckle or two - location diversity - fantastic sense of exploration - the first couple hours made me realize these games are what I play video games for - a rather unique approach to treating stamina as a resource, making you be more mindful of your attacks while battling powerful enemies instead of just slashing them to death (admittedly, this doesn't work at all when you're swarmed with enemies and is only a source of frustration) - an actual, non-artificial, relatively high difficulty level, especially if you don't take your time exploring and have your stamina and health at lower levels - maps designed around items you receive, not around getting a double jump during the first hour of gameplay like many metroidvanias do nowadays Meh: - the main plot is whatever -maintaining inventory space is a pain in the beginning, especially when you pick up something you can properly turn in only hours later - pizel art quality is OK, nothing to write home about but it also doesn't look downright bad Cons: - the combat is not great, I don't mind the approach in this game, it's just boring with only a few weapons at my disposal and stamina management becomes a major issue when attacked by multiple enemies (looking at the Mul Caves spiders here) - some unfun locations where getting hit once, then falling on spikes, only to be hit by another enemy after jumping out of them to land on the spikes and take damage from them again is bound to make you even a little bit salty - no fast travel is a pain in the ass - the weird lack of QOL - no maps for more detailed locations, no cloud saves (!) - the platformer locations kind of suck, they're usually rather small, filled with enemies that don't take a lot of skill to beat

Ive been craving a new metroidvania lately and while I didnt buy this game expecting it to be one, it certainly scratched that itch. Its technically not a metroidvania, more of a sidescrolling rpg, but it has weapons and items to find and unlock, rewards for going off the beaten path, revisiting old areas later, all of the staples of a good metroidvania are here. Also the music is amazing and the areas to explore are gorgeous! The game says its not steam deck supported but it works perfectly fine. just adjust the resolution and turn on smooth follow in the settings.

I absolutely loved this game! It's such a unique and interesting mix of an RPG and Metroidvania. There's a world map you can walk around with towns and dungeons and sidequests and everything but the towns and dungeons are all setup in a metroidvania style. There's no exp, you power up by finding hidden items that raise your health or stamina. The game really focuses on exploration and puzzle solving which I really loved. There's literally hundreds of secrets to find. The combat can maybe be a bit janky at times. Some of the boss fights felt really difficult and unfair. But other than that this game was an absolute masterpiece. It was 100% right up my alley and I loved it.
