When I originally played this game, I thought it had a really cool core gameplay loop that unfortunately quickly became stale due to a large number of game systems feeling rushed or incomplete. Then, it seemed like the game would be abandoned, because there were some issues with the developers or publishers or whatever. But not so! They've continued to release fairly meaty updates every few months or so, and just announced an upcoming rework to the pilot system (giving them meaningful skills and distinctions), which was a big missing piece for me personally at launch. I'm giving a thumbs up here because I think the game is moving in a good direction - my opinion over the past 6 months or so has gone from a wistful "what it could have been" to a hopeful "what it might become." The powers that be could have easily cut their losses and moved on, but they continue to iterate and make big updates, and I really appreciate that.

Update: 11/09/2024 Eye candy. Mechs are nice, effects are cool. Weapons are fun. However, there are not a lot of things to do in the game, and it can feel repetitive at times. Treat this as a short break from all the other games you play like maybe 1-3 hours of gameplay. Mech building is fun even if you already have your main team built because there are so many variations and fun tools. The bosses are pretty good they have some variation in their weapon layout despite having only 1 model. - 7/10 Here are my personal wish lists (update) - pilots don't feel unique. Pls, give them skill trees. - I would love to see more defense-type missions. Currently, there is only one scenario. - this is a bit out there but a city building system would be nice. Spending resources to upgrade infrastructures or bonuses for a town could tie this to a variety of stuff. - it's hard to be invested in the game because there are almost nothing to be invest in other than the mech themselves. (devman said this point is not their focus atm)

Mechanically pretty good, it is rather padded though. It's in an awkward place. There is an overworld you move around on like in Mount and Blade. There are occasional missions. Most missions take the form of parking somewhere for a little while or having a fight. Which is where the problem comes in. There is a big country to conquer and not too much variety in missions. It's gonna take me like 40-60 hours to complete a campaign. I'm like 4-5 territories in and every one works the same way. The equipment system is complex and interesting, but lacking anything too spicy. No crazy weapon variants, just incremental changes in various statistics. There is a profound lack of personality. It needs more voice acting, especially for the pilots. As it stands all they are is a portrait, they don't even seem to have specific stats. Just a kill count. With a campaign so long it really needs more short term goals and surprises. Hopefully patches will add things like pilot weapon specializations, maybe personalities and quest interactions. I want more worldbuilding, more detail, more personality/creativity. This game is fun for the gameplay, but there is nothing that sparks the 'one more turn/one more fight' feeling that X-com and Civ provide. It's very close to being great, but somehow doesn't spark much emotion. I should note that their recent patch made numerous positive changes to the gameplay, hopefully they're still working on it :)

The gameplay is great and the upgrade/loot system feels good when picking up pieces after a fight. Plenty of options when equipping your squad. What I like even more is the fact that they are continuing to add features and use feedback to improve an already awesome game. There's plenty of depth at this stage in development to keep you busy strategizing and enjoying the battles. Thanks Devs!

Legitimately not sure why this game isn't more popular. I get the criticisms and I'll go over them in a bit, but quite frankly I don't see why the game's positives don't outweigh them for many people. This is a neat mech tactics game where you give orders in 5 second slices while being able to see what enemies will do in that 5 second period and respond accordingly. This leads to hilariously hectic battles where you can do things like do hit and run attacks while moving from cover to cover unharmed, forcing enemies to blast their friends in friendly fire, timing melee attacks so you do them and move away at JUST the right time to avoid being hit by a friendly also shooting at the same target, using thrusters to suddenly break missile locks at the last possible second, etc. There's a lot of possibilities in how the player can use this mechanic with the other tools provided for some amazing tactical maneuvers and the only other game I've seen to do anything remotely interesting with a timeline mechanic is an incredibly niche RTS game known as Achron. Now when people say they don't like this game, they point to a few things: 1. The game is repetitive 2. The game has no story 3. There's some half baked mechanics like pilots lacking any skill trees or a level system To that end I feel the first two are kind of silly criticisms. Yes the game is repetitive, but it's repetitive gameplay loop is effectively the prediction based tactical mech combat mechanic I kind of thought people would have bought the game for to begin with. There's a metagame element in that you conquer provinces, upgrade your base, get new gear and gradually grow stronger as you choose which targets to attack, but I don't know what else you were expecting? A recent update added new mission types and boss battles, so there is a large degree of variety in terms of how battles will play out, especially when we consider the possibility of nearby patrols reinforcing. It just feels weird to me to say the game is repetitive if the repetitive aspect is the thing a lot of people are going to want to actually do repeatedly. There's almost no story, which is fine. I don't think we need much excuse to do guerrilla warfare involving mechs. I'm not going to claim that if there was a story I'd argue that the game would be better without one, but I'm also not super worried about of absence of one when the appeal of the game doesn't feel like it requires a compelling narrative. The last criticism I find quite valid. I'd like to see more work done on the game. I find the weakest point to be the pilot system. They are interchangable for the most part. The game tracks how many battles they have been in, but they don't get better in any way. I'd also like to see more done with the idea of home guard reinforcement and maybe have more upgradable features for the mobile base. Overall this is a pretty neat game, albeit one largely standing out entirely on the time prediction mechanic and some meta game elements.
