the servers got shut down and the game is still for sale. SCAM AT THIS POINT. (the game didn't even come out a year a go but was in early access for many years wtf ). well although they let the game sit serverless for about a month after its release it is up and running again.

The core gameplay is great but 1.0 sucks. Random modifiers can fuck you over and the user interface just keeps getting more convoluted. Sad to see a great title broken for no reason, hope devs fix it soon

Really fun and addictive 3D platforming rogue-lite. I was an early fan of Phantom Abyss and I got into it when it was still in the first few months of Early Access. It started out great, but one of the major updates made changes to the progression that were very un-fun, so I stopped playing. I decided to give it another chance when Version 1.0 released and I'm so happy that I did. The progression is so much better now, and the gameplay feels less punishing as a result. Because there is now a permanent upgrade system and I can use all the items I have unlocked, I feel like i can play against the more challenging environments and traps without dying to RNG early on. Congrats to the developers on sorting out the issues. I heartily recommend this to fans of the rogue-lite genre.

During Early Access this game changed quite a bit. People would complain it was too hard or too easy. They would add things in and take things out (RIP Long Whip). With the 1.0 release I think there's enough options in this now for casual players to enjoy the game and enthusiasts to challenge themselves. There's still the odd bug here and there, but those are fixable. It's fun exploring and seeing how others play/die.

The big issue people will find is it's repetitiveness, but what the game gets right is very good. Running through temples, recognizing traps, and mastering the movement and tools at your disposal is very satisfying. What it gets wrong are minor in my opinion. After a few hours you start to recognize entire rooms (which is common in rougelikes), and a lot of people find there to be a steep learning curve for the later floors. I don't hate a learning curve, but if the reward you're going for is specific relics, running through like 10 floors of a temple just to get one you already have is a bit disappointing. After getting every relic and completing adventure mode, this became a game I pick up every now and then, but still enjoy. TLDR: If you like this type of game, it's worth a pick up. The 1.0 launch at the end of this month is revamping the whip progression (again...) and is adding the fourth and final floor.
