This game is really weird, yet still fun. Who would I recommend this game to? Well, if you are a PewDiePie fan, especially long-term, then this is a no-brainer. Newer fans that joined past the period for when this game was made might still find some enjoyment from it too. And for those who aren’t a fan of Pewds or don’t even know about him, I’d still recommend this game to you, but on a steep sale that is like 75%. Let me tell you why that is: The good > The main part of the game (besides the story) is pretty good. There’s lots of unique levels, enemies, boss fights and more that keep things fresh, the sprite work is well made, and some tracks of the OST are honestly bangers too. > Lots of options on how to play the game. Suck at platformers? Play duck mode for a casual experience. Seeking a challenge? Barrel, or even Bro mode has that covered. You can even equip power ups and increase the number of hearts you have (can’t lower them back down though). Also, you can play as Markiplier. What more do you need? > As an added bonus, you are able to play this game with a friend through local-coop and man does it make it a blast. Definitely a big selling point in my opinion. > (Point for PewDiePie fans) Ever want a throwback to old PewDiePie humor, references, and jokes? This game is full of them. Stephano, Jennifer, even the legendary Falcon Lover. Some are more obvious, some more obscure. (I bet 99% of the people who played this game never heard of Dr. Crab before) The bad > The game is pretty short, with around 2 hours of playtime (my longer playtime comes from trying to beat Pug mode). When the asking prize was originally 5 bucks on IOS and Android, that was tolerable, especially because the game just came out and the jokes didn’t age badly. I think 8 bucks is asking for quite a lot though. Yes, there are bonus levels, but I didn’t really enjoy them as much as I did the main levels. > While there are a lots of characters and abilities to choose from, chances are, that you won’t be able to use all of them to their fullest potential before you finish the game, simply because the game doesn’t throw enough coins at you. And the desire to unlock everything when there’s nothing to use them on is really low. I only had everything fully unlocked and bought once I finally finished playing the game through Pug mode. > Some of the things in this game did REALLY not age well. For starters, the second level of this game is played on a highway bridge. Then, there’s Cryaotic, the content creator who got exposed as a groomer in 2020. > This game has so much missed potential. The earlier mentioned power ups are one of them, but I also wish Outerminds allowed people to create custom levels in the game to share with others. Not only would that have outweighed the short playtime, it doesn’t feel impossible either, since the sky or valentines day level have a simple base of just randomly placed cubes and shapes. The ugly This deserves it’s own mention: Pug mode. On paper, it’s not necessarily a bad idea. A hardcore difficulty for the game that prohibits you to use power ups and puts you on one heart for the entirety of the level. It’s purely optional too, and you unlock it after beating the final boss of the game. …Until you think about 100% the achievements. Then it’s no longer optional. And oh my god, this was honestly really miserable. The normal levels were fine, and I feel like fit this game mode the best. No matter how good or bad you were, with patience, you could probably beat them too. But some of the levels have you just waiting for rescue to arrive, or bosses that throw a lot of random garbage at you. And when your difficulty purely comes from chance and luck, rather than skill or technique, then you have yourself a really unfun difficulty setting. There isn’t even a reward or point to doing this besides the achievements. It’s simply an unoptimized, pointless addition to the game. If people wanted bragging rights for no-hitting the game, they can do that on their own. But don’t force it on the players like this. In conclusion Negatives aside, this was a fun experience, and can be enjoyed by fans or not. I genuinely enjoyed my time originally playing through the game on Bro mode with my friend. And honestly, for a game themed around a YouTuber, this is probably one of the best ones out there, hands down. The current asking price is a little too high, but anything five bucks or lower will make your money’s more worth for the experience. For me, it’s a 7/10 for the base game, 8.5/10 with a friend and 3.5/10 if we are talking about Pug mode. Tl;dr: Game’s fine. Grab it on sale. Non-fans would probably enjoy this too on a really low price.
