Persona games have a unique ability to make me mourn the fact that they're going to end even though I'm only like, halfway through.

Man, even in the remake they haven't fixed the weird bug where the ending cutscene gets all blurry.

The original Persona 3 was very much a diamond in the rough. An excellent story and a really fun game bogged down by the limitations of a system far too limited to show the intended beauty of the environments, a sparsity of content and a couple really bizarre design choices here and there. This fixes everything, which is really on par for ATLUS remakes. There is a lot more character interaction that you might be used to from P4/5, with proper social links (if not arcana-based) for the entire crew and then some. The main story had some extra stuff added to fill in some gaps, and being able to interact with Strega is a huge deal as well. Tartarus is still... there , and it's still the same randomly-generated predictable mess that it was before. But now it looks gorgeous, and the different blocks actually feel different from each other. A few additions to its formula such as the extremely challenging optional boss fights and the extra rewards help spice it up just enough to feel at least on par with P4's dungeons, which is a big improvement. Both the combat and the social systems are at the deepest they've ever been in this series. The ability for some social links to unlock others, or the ability to reverse social links, has been completely removed from P4 onwards -- but this game brings those back, which is excellent. The addition of Theurgy gives each character a distinct role that they're encouraged to play, but it's in no way forced on you so you can still play your way. It also goes without saying that the new talented voice cast does a phenomenal job of helping the game's story move along. If you're one of the people who play in English, then you're no longer stuck with the robotic and emotionless voice of the original game. My only remaining complaint is the somewhat slow pacing at the start of the game, it takes forever to fully introduce its systems and to allow you to interact with its main cast properly. However, it's a shorter timespan than in the original, and there's a lot to do in the meantime. I'd like to address a few additional concerns that I see some people bring up: [*] This does not have FES content. This one is... simply not true. All of the extras FES added to the main game are here. What is currently not included is Episode Aegis/The Answer, which is available as DLC. The Answer was always a DLC (well, an append disc) in Japan, so this isn't too surprising. [*] The soundtrack/artbook are locked behind custom executables. This is true, and was probably done by ATLUS so that they could also release them on consoles (as they don't have support for proper file management). If you want the actual files, they are trivially extracted from this Steam version, so it's still worth a purchase (if you care to have these things). [*] No Kotone/FeMC. This is true. However, her presence is largely made redundant by introduction of social interactions for the male crew members, which was the main selling point for her other than just her being a girl. Her storyline also introduced a few flaws into the story of P3, breaking some of its themes and making a lot of the characters come off as much worse than intended, so that's not a playthrough I'd recommend to a new player. If you care about her simply because a female character is easier for you to identify with, I'm sorry, there's not much there can be done other than waiting for someone to mod her in or playing Portable. However, if you care about her because of the story improvements in her route, you'll find a lot of the same things done in Reload, and done better.

As a disclaimer, I never played the original P3, Portable, or FES prior to playing Reload. And my only exposure to Persona prior to this was playing Persona 5 Royal two years ago. So this was my first time with the Persona 3 experience. When comparing Persona 3 to Persona 5, I'll admit I think the gameplay of Persona 5 was slightly better, and definitely had more flair. But the story, characters, and structure of Persona 3 hit me like a truck in a way I was not prepared for. Obviously I won't spoil the story elements, but despite feeling like the game had a slow start when I first started playing, I found myself intrigued by how well everything connected in the end, even seemingly isolated events. The story just builds on itself. I consider myself a fairly stoic person. I very much internalize my feelings, so even when experiencing intense emotion, I don't outwardly express them. But Persona 3 put actual tears in my eyes at least 3 times. That's a feat that doesn't happen often in any game. What most surprised me was the characters. Again, no spoilers, but I'm very used to characters in all JRPGs having their character arc and just being "done". But in Persona 3, it really felt like characters developed throughout the entire game, even those you got early. I will say that I think the voice actors all nailed the roles for each and every character. I know there was some debate about characters being recast from the OG, but in terms of viewing the game on its own, I think every VA absolutely nailed it with their deliveries. True to Persona fashion, you build your relationships with characters, both party members and NPCs. Interesting to note that the male party members don't have social links but still have hangout episodes which are arguably just as valuable for character development. My only criticism about social links is that the party member social links are very back-loaded by only really being fully accessible in the 2nd half of the game. But even that has narrative significance in the sense of building those relationships over the game. Gameplay-wise, although I did say that I slightly prefer P5, the game is still classic turn based fun with modern QoL. The concept is familiar; your Personas determine your abilities and stats, with the MC having multiple Personas and your party having one each. Hitting a weakness will knock down an enemy, and knocking down all enemies triggers an all out attack for big damage. You get an extra turn per knockdown, and can pass your turn to another party member after a knockdown to specifically target weaknesses. What sets P3's gameplay apart from P5 is Theurgy, a mid-game "super move" that all party members have, and most ignore resistances/immunities. Considering different party members have different conditions for charging Theurgy, it keeps the strategy fresh. Much of Persona 3's gameplay takes place in Tartarus, which is an extremely long dungeon that you progress through during the game, with each border to the next segment being gated by game progression. It was notorious in the OG, but in the remake, it's not bad! I will mention that it sometimes suffers from some minor frame drops, not to the extent of chugging, but Tartarus's visuals effects do slow down the game somewhat on occasion. Now, I'm sure there's one big question and that question is length. Persona 5 was infamously long after all, so how does Persona 3 compare? I beat the game at 76 hours, so I'd say an average is about 80. It's long, but not obscenely so like P5, so it's more reasonable. And of course, the music slaps. While music is subjective and I know some people prefer the OG songs, every song I heard did a good job evoking the desired emotion, whether it be dread, hype, or depression. The music lives rent free in my mind at all times. Overall, I say this very rarely, but this game was a 10/10 for me personally. Will it be for everyone? Maybe not. But for any lover of RPGs, Persona games, or just stories with well written characters, Persona 3 Reload is a must play. I absolutely adore this game.
