My favorite level from Ori and the Will of the Wisps was the desert. Built around drilling through sand and leaping out at the right angle, it was nothing short of brilliant. I remember saying to myself, “They could probably make a whole game around that idea!” Pepper Grinder is that game. Back in May, I tried the demo on Switch and while I liked the drilling, the first few levels felt kinda samey. Six months later, a sale arrives on Steam. I picked it up, plugged in my GameCube controller adapter, and started drilling. I admire the choice to go full-throttle with a single mechanic. More platformers should try that. After achieving 100% though, I’m left conflicted. I’m not sure if developer Ahr Ech could not conceive of new ways to utilize the drill or if they got distracted during development, but not every stage uses the drill to a satisfying degree. A handful of them give you at least one of three tools that don’t compliment the core gameplay: a gatling gun that turns the experience into a 2D shooter, a snowboard that primarily consists of holding right to progress, or a lumbering mech for stampeding everything in your path. None of these sections were bad. In fact, they were fairly enjoyable, but I was hoping to see more complimentary drilling mechanics, like the switch platforms, Donkey Kong Country-inspired cannons, and special types of terrain. Grappling hooks are a dime a dozen nowadays, and Penny’s Big Breakaway already did a better job with swing momentum earlier this year. The implementation in Pepper Grinder is also fumbled by being a toggle input instead of a hold and release like the cannons, with no option to switch it. The skull coins were lazily done. Nearly all of them are just checking for small alcoves along the main path. Maybe that was done for the time trials. I still think Pizza Tower’s ranking system reigns supreme, but at least going for the gold here requires thorough knowledge of the stages and finding shortcuts by drill boosting. Most took me at least a few tries to clear. The bosses were surprisingly challenging. A little annoyed you can’t skip their intro cinematics (apart from the final boss for some reason), but great on the whole! Like my review, Pepper Grinder is all over the place. My initial impressions were both right and wrong, but I think this developer has the potential to make something great in the future. It took me 9 hours to achieve 100%. I’ll let you decide if that’s worth $15. Like actual pepper, the experience is enjoyable with the right dosage.

Pepper grinder was basically everything I expected it to be and that means I had a lot of fun with it. I Haven't gone for 100% completion and I likely won't but this is the type of game that really elevates itself in getting that completion done level by level, challenge by challenge, every attempt shaving off those few precious seconds until you're so good at getting through this game that you can show it off and people will actually be impressed rather than just think you're a blowhard. Only point of critique is that I never did get quite used to the control scheme but ultimately that's more so on me than on the game itself. all in all you can already see it's a blue thumbs up, just know the game is pretty short if you don't go for the 100% not a downside to me but it could be to you.

Pepper Grinder is a short and charming 2D platformer based on a digging mechanic similar to the one in Ori and the Will of the Wisps . The game is quite short, I beat it in three hours of playtime. The structure is very classic Mario, you have a cute overworld that's drawn in a pirate map style, each world is a different map screen and has about five platforming levels and one boss level. Across the four worlds they play with the main drilling mechanic in a few interesting ways, but I did leave the experience thinking that they could've pushed a little further with it and had another few worlds. That being said, what's here is fun. The levels are stylish and exciting, although the bosses weren't my favorite. Similar to classic Mario games, each level has special coins you can collect, giving incentive to replay them. These coins are hidden quite well; there were only three or four levels where I manged to find every coin on my first run through. They also have a time attack/speedrun challenge for every level for those who enjoy time trials. The bosses are hit-or-miss, I enjoyed the first two, but the last two felt a little finicky with hitbox interactions; that being said, I certainly could've approached the fights with more patience. Overall, I had a good time with Pepper Grinder , the drilling mechanic is great fun, and the game doesn't wear out the novelty of the mechanic during its short runtime. It brought back memories of classic 2D platformers in its structure, but was distinctly contemporary in its gameplay and variety. While it was enjoyable, it didn't do anything over-the-top that compelled me to go for the 100% or sink more time into it after rolling credits. It's a good game that I'd recommend to platforming fans who are looking for a fun experience that they can knock out in a day or two. It's like if you combined Donkey Kong Country's fluid level design with the drill mechanic from Drill Dozer. It's super fun. Like, EXTREMELY fun. This is one of those platformers that feels really satisfying to master! It has a short runtime, but the addition of time trials kept me coming back to Pepper Grinder. You just kinda drop into this 'flow' state when playing that not many modern platformers offer; the controls are responsive and finely tuned. Pepper Grinder is at it's weakest with the boss fights. While they offer creative ideas (especially the final boss) they are pretty tedious to do. Each one boils down to find a weak spot, hit it when it's exposed, but only if the level allows. They can drag on if you're waiting for a chance to attack. Besides that, all the levels and branching paths are really fun! They have a pick-up-n-play kinda nature to them while retaining a pinch of challenge to keep you on your toes. There are tons of gimmicks in each one and it was fun to discover them all. They aren't reused more than once or twice, and this means each level feels unique and memorable. If you enjoy fluid level design and unique mechanics, pick this one up! It's short, sweet, and a great way to end an evening. (Review shared from my Backloggd page)
