It's gorgeous. It's engaging. It's well written, yes. Pentiment is oozing with life, but, more than anything, this earnest, curious game has achieved that which I think is so difficult in narrative games like this -- a sense of being "encompassing". It's understanding of early Christianity, of early Europe and it's customs, of the nature of people and the stories and art pieces which pull them through hardship combine in such a seamless, thoughtful way. All these elements can be a bit much, almost -- but the way that they are so seamlessly introduced without becoming too annoying or unexpected make the reading experience a dream. And the characters! The game's understanding that history is as much about people as it is about the stories we tell about them gives it a depth I've rarely seen done so well. There are so many difficult questions posed by Pentiment -- and the sensitivity in which it's characters and I approached them made me realize that we are much closer to that thing we often compartmentalize as "history" than I thought. If there's anything I've come away from this game with, it's that sense of connection with the past. To think that there were people (okay video game characters sure) at a time so far removed who thought like us, were capable of having the kinds of lives and thoughts that we do, expanded my perspective. History is as much now as it is then. Like the people of Tassing, we will one day be remembered only through pictures and things. How our own story as a "modern people" has become much more prescient in my day to day life. (How that plays in too with the player's limited interaction with the story is also very well thought out, ludonarratively.) I would be more specific, but I refuse to spoil anything. It's been a long while since I've played a game with such a thorough vision, which so thoroughly created what can only be described as magic. Wonderful, wonderful game!

"Be a medieval artist," they said. "See the funny margin doodles," they said. I was NOT PREPARED for the emotional and intellectual sucker punch this game inflicted on me. It had deep conversations on art, life, loss, self-fulfilment, religion, language, culture, society, and more - but they were all weaved beautifully through the game, and never felt preachy or cumbersome. I truly felt that I was making meaningful choices in the game, while also coming to meaningful decisions in my own views on the world. I can't think of many other games that made me think so deeply - or cry so often. In terms of execution, the choices made by the team are just perfect. The art of the world and characters aptly evokes the styles of medieval books and murals, and even in its simplicity has just enough personality and animation to make the characters unique and come to life. The typography design - my goodness, how clever; using captions - a necessary UI element that is usually taken for granted - to say something about the people speaking them and about the world they live in, is just a stroke of genius. The sound design that accompanies those captions is also wonderful, as are the few poignant pieces of music that accompany some powerful scenes. And all of this is built on a foundation of a really interesting plot, that had me hooked, gasping, agonising at choices, and eventually satisfied, if emotional. I would say that most of Act 3 felt a little drawn out and out of pace with the rest of the game, but it was absolutely worth powering through to get the full experience. As a professional illustrator I related to so many bits in the game, and felt so seen (and occasionally personally attacked), so I deeply recommend this game to anyone who considers themselves an artist. But also to anyone who doesn't mind a lot of reading or being an emotional wreck for a few days. I think the payoff is more than worth it.

Just an insanely well-written game. I don't even want to talk about the story too much because it should just be experienced first hand. The fact that Josh Sawyer went from New Vegas to this is George Miller-esque in genre shifting. The comparisons to Disco Elysium are apt, but almost unfair, as this game completely stands on its own and isn't merely "Disco Elysium in the HRE." God bless you Andreas Maler.

From a story perspective, easily one of the best games I've played in years. All told, this is a mature game for people not looking for a quite thrill, but who are willing to explore a complex world and pay attention to details. I don't think I'll ever play it again, but I'll probably remember it for years to come, and will recommend it liberally. The story itself was very compelling. Getting to know each of the villagers and their histories was quite the treat. Seeing them change and be affected by the events of the story was even better. It was obvious that the writers took care to depict the characters' emotions honestly, including trauma of war, famine, and other maladies that could befall a medieval person. Also, the joys, simple pleasures, and hopefulness that people can have; especially when they band together. The gameplay is lackluster, but that's not why you're playing a detective story set in the late Middle Ages. I grant that this game fell closer to the visual novel end of the spectrum than anything else, but as someone who loves text heavy RPGs, I have no problem with that. Lastly, but most importantly to me: the attention to historical detail. As someone who practices medieval art, I found the attention to detail gorgeous, including the various historical scripts used to depict the class and position of various individuals. When a character early in the game had their dialogue depicted in moveable type instead of handwritten text, I whooped in joy, discovering that this little detail was meant to show us this character was a printer. The inclusion of an Ethiopian monk at a monastery, traveling eastern Europeans, and various languages helps dispel unfortunate tropes about whitewashing and samefying the European middle ages. If you're at all interested in history as a series of human events and not just a bunch of dates, wars, and Great Men, give this a look.
