Long story short? πŸ€” The game is fun and justifies its price (I’ve paid ~$6.5) β€” it has a really slick and nice UI, UX is decent enough, the gameplay is tons of fun and some modes/maps are hilarious πŸ˜‚ There’s quite a variety of modes: β€’ Mario Kart alike gamemode β€’ Fighting maps β€’ Team based maps where you need to do various objectives (the most diversed mode) β€’ Smash Bros-esque 6 rounds fighting mode with roguelite (kinda) element! β€’ Also there’s a hub map (available only in Custom Modes) with 2 board games β€” one is, basically, UNO, but another one I didn’t try (needs more than 2 players). β€’ And so on… My main gripe with the game is that Party Animals desperately needs more content β€” and I’m not talking about cosmetics, but maps and modes. Currently, there’s quite little variety! While the game is fun for the first time which you can prolong by playing a few maps per one time, but you will consume all the content pretty fast. Actually very fast. The game will last way longer if you have friends/family/partner, but it still won’t last long. Maybe a few weekends, tops. The only solution I see is for the devs to drop one map/mode per month, at least. Okay, maybe per two months, which is hilariously bad, but still something. The game is paid but there’s such a huge amount of paid content, it’s baffling. Like so many paid currencies! Remember that hub map I’ve talked about? You can buy placeable stuff like swings and fireworks for ONE OF PAID CURRENCIES β€” and these placeables are CONSUMABLES, so they are not infinite. You can, somehow, earn this paid currency, but it’s very-very slow. There’s an in-game currency (which you can still exchange to via main paid currency), but you cannot buy much stuff for it. There are even loot boxes. I’m okay-ish with them, however you get very little currency for said loot boxes β€” though you can pay real money to get them, of course. Anyway, I wish the devs all the best, I really hope they will add more content reasonably fast. If they implement some sort of map/mode builder, then it’ll be a banger for sure! πŸ”₯ Well, that’s about it. Message to the devs βœ‰οΈ β€œYou are cooking a really good game, you already making something extremely fun and diverse β€” please continue making good stuff and do not abandon the game, neither flood it with microtransactions. Also, thanks a lot for the Friend’s Pass system β€” it’s amazing! We can invite one player for free and play with them in (almost?) all modes!” P.S: The game doesn’t have an offline mode (or so it seems). Please keep it in mind. I didn’t test local co-op, but, as far as I understand, it works. However, again, you need to have internet connection. I do not know any limitations of local co-op, but I do know that there’s split screen (not every map/mode has it!) and you can connect multiple controllers. Hopefully someone will make a handler for this game for NucleusCOOP πŸ’―

An absolutely amazing party game providing hours of fun for anyone, with some toxicity (propelled by the game itself) and basically zero offline support. The good I think Party Animals is an immensely fun game, I really enjoy playing it, especially with friends in custom games. Custom games have support for bots (with three difficulty levels), making games with even 2-3 human players fun and chaotic. There's a lot of variety through maps and the newly introduced Smash and Mario Kart-esque Nemo Kart game modes. The game supports local split-screen play, albeit it's a bit limited, see below. While there are micro-transactions, they are cosmetic-only, and the game allows you to earn some of its premium currency, too, through level ups and achievements, which I think is a very nice addition - I have been able to buy skins that cost premium currency only by playing the game. There is also a "friend pass", which lets anyone download the game for free, and play with you when you invite them, basically giving you two copies of the game for the price of one. They can do the tutorial on their own and then join a game you invite them to, and even progress. The not-so-good As for the negatives, which will be much longer, but not because I think the game is bad. I'm hoping that my review will not only help those looking at buying this game, but also the developers. 1. The game is still online-only , for which it has been criticized heavily. My biggest gripe with it is that even a supposedly local game in custom match mode, where I'm the only player, is still running through the internet: if my connection is shaky, my character will lag. We played with friends in split-screen through Wi-Fi in a custom game with bots, and it was unplayable. This can be a serious gripe for those looking for offline fun: you cannot play this game without a stable internet connection, not even custom games, where you cannot complete weekly quests (though you earn XP). I wish the developers leaned a bit more into making at least custom games offline-accessible, even if there was no progression while the game is offline. Also, you create a separate profile (account) in the game, which is a bit weird. Deep Rock Galactic did this much better with all data being in your save files (and thus tied to your Steam account), though that game has less micro-transactions and is also not competitive in any way. 2. Split-screen . It works, but not in every game mode, and it's a bit basic. For example, the months-old Smash and Nemo Kart game modes (at the time of writing) still cannot be played in split-screen. The game simply tells you that you cannot do that with local players. Second, since most maps are relatively small, it would make sense to do some dynamic split screen or even play on one big screen, but you are limited to always being split. This is a bit disadvantageous, as the screen is split horizontally in the middle (the two screens are next to each other), severely limiting horizontal view, which is essential to get a grasp of the (usually quite chaotic) situation around you (you don't look much up and down, but you do have to look left and right a lot). This is only an issue with 2 players, as with 3 or 4, you have your regular screen aspect ratio for your view. Playing with friends on a large screen works, though. 3. The (luckily not that huge) toxicity . I am happy that voice chat can be turned off as-is (I did so when first booting up the game), which from today, requires a verified phone number to use anyway. I wish we could disable text chat, too, or at least limit it to team only. While the occasional emote spamming and "ez" text chats aren't too common (luckily I encounter these in about less than 1 of 5 matches), I think the developers could greatly reduce the remaining toxicity by removing quests that require you to win games - especially since these quests are usually the ones that give you "regular" currency, and this is the only way to earn it besides progression. The other quests ("play X games as an animal that can dive" and such) are really creative, and if only these were left in, I'm sure it would ease the tension. It's a bit easy to get hooked and focus on just winning the game, and I think it's partly due to the quests that are tied to victory. 4. The (absence of) changelogs . The game is frequently updated, but patch logs are often not supplied with the updates. We've had one when the Nemo Kart game mode was introduced, for example, but for smaller changes, we usually don't get any. I've just found out that the previously Last Stand (4 teams of 2 players) "Ice breaker" map was changed to play out with 2 teams of 4 players, but I've never seen a patch log mentioning this. Verdict Buy this game if you're into party games and have at least one friend. Solo, and become toxic in quick matches. Great game, lots of cute animals (skins), fun, sometimes quirky physics-based mechanics and smooth gameplay.

I immediately deleted this game because it has no local offline play. This would have been a great game to play with friends and family,m but, as is, just not suited to my poor wifi countryside home.

March 2024
Party Animals is one of my most played games in my library and I continue to enjoy it on every revisit. But the more I play it, the more I see that it's difficult to recommend to newcomers. On the surface you can imagine that it's a casual party game with cute animals punching each other; however, this is deeply contrasted by the extremely competitive nature of the in-game community. Players who have previous experience with similar physics-based games, such as Gang Beasts or Human Fall Flat, should have a knack for Party Animals and it'd be an easy recommendation. But players with no prior experience should carefully consider if this game is right for them. The following sections of this review will elaborate on my complicated love and hate story with Party Animals. The Good: The fighting controls are more complex than Gang Beasts' and random weapons spawn on the arena to spice up each round. There are several modes to play such as Last Stand (2v2v2v2 or 4v4), Team Score (4v4), and Cabin (for casual off-brand Uno games). The combat is very rewarding once you get a proper handle on it. Exp earned unlocks unique rewards up to level 100, and the achievements also unlock costumes and currency. Players who invest enough time into Party Animals can get around the gacha and game currency limits by gaining experience past level 100 to earn daily mystery boxes containing cookies, Nemo bucks, or lottery coins. I never had a hard time buying the costumes I like in the game's shop because I've earned and saved plenty of currency. The majority of my hours was spent in solo play but I had more fun whenever I was in a party with friends. Team work is at the heart of each game mode and it's very fun to embrace it with like-minded players. My favorite map of all time is Fluffy Redemption. The respawns are unlimited and there's room for mistakes. I like to switch my roles whenever needed, I could be placing coals into the firebox for a few minutes, attack the opposite team's train to slow them down, and then go back to my train to defend it. I love the animal and environment physics! Animals can be tossed out of the arena with the right momentum and movement. Each Last Stand map has a hazard that gets deadlier as time passes. Castleween is notable for its random environment destruction. I also enjoy how it's possible to knock out animals with random stuff such as lamps, fishes, and hats. There's no shortage of crazy stuff that can happen in Party Animals. The replayability is practically infinite. The Bad: The initial two hours played on Party Animals may not be enough time to determine if the game is right for some players. In my case, I had a blast during my first 100 hours even while I was solo queuing for matches. But I'm sure newcomers will be frustrated once they encounter the tryhards and toxics in the community. The matchmaking in Party Animals is split into 2 categories: Quick Match and Custom Games. Custom Games offers limited exp gained daily, and Quick Match allows you to level up indefinitely to level 100 + 3 daily mystery boxes. Custom Games are filled with AI bots and it's not obvious which ones have human players. Quick Match is a very simplified system with no variety of options. You can't select Last Stand or Team Score as the mode you'd prefer to join, and you can't opt to join a queue filled with other solo queue'd players. Instead, Quick Match will join together solo queue'd players with coordinated players in a party, and they'll have to vote on a Last Stand or Team Score map. This creates an environment that throws newcomers into a trial by fire. I've read other players' reviews on Party Animals and I can definitely see where they're coming from: the game turns into a waiting simulator after being eliminated quickly in Last Stand. I find that Team Score modes are more casual than Last Stand, and it'd be a great boon for newcomers if there was a "Quick Match - Team Score" option. Quick Match is also the only practical way to earn rewards + exp. Winning will award a lot of exp towards a level up, and losing will award very minimal exp regardless of how well you've played. And many of the achievements require amazing feats in Quick Match. Here's an example: "666 - In Buzz Ball, single-handedly accumulate all points for your team and win (Quick Match)." These tryhard achievements contrast the intended spirit of a casual party game. All in all, players are encouraged to play competitively to extremes if they want to earn currency or unique costumes. It's no surprise that there're so many tryhards and toxics, not to the mention the AFK players who farm exp. My Suggestions to the Devs: [*] Please add a variety of options to Quick Match. You can divide it into sections: Any Mode, Last Stand, Team Score. This wouldn't mess with the map voting if you filter players into their preferred modes first. [*] Add a solo queue and party queue option in Quick Match. [*] Allow players to control both hands independently. (I want to heavy punch with my left hand too!) [*] Allow players to climb with both hands instead of just jumping while grabbing. (Gang Beasts' climbing is better and more responsive.) Conclusion: There's a lot to love about Party Animals, but there's also a lot to hate about it. I keep returning to Party Animals because I love physics-based games and platformers. I think the good outweighs the bad, despite having many complaints. Newcomers, on the other hand, should beware of the Quick Matchmaking and the community's git gud attitude. Party Animals' learning curve is pretty high but will reward those who are willing to overcome it. My final rating for the game: 9/10. My rating for the in-game community: 6/10.
