Parquet is the first visual novel from Yuzusoft SOUR, the all-ages offshoot of Yuzusoft. It's a relatively short (about 5 1/2 hours for me) visual novel that tells a story that is a bit about finding yourself, a bit of a mystery, and a bit about friendship. It does all of this decently to good without any major flaws but nothing in particular really stood out to me either. Music is a particular positive callout in this title. Yuzusoft music to me usually all blends together, but it felt a bit more unique in this case and lended a bit more to the story at hand. Systems are all standard for Yuzusoft, which I found the flowchart particularly amusing in a linear story. I think this visual novel is an example of a short runtime leading to characters that deserved to be fleshed out a bit more. I definitely see what they were doing and can imagine where the characters were going and what is likely there, but I would have enjoyed more slice of life moments and all to get to experience it myself. Especially the after stories, which were both less than 15 minutes, I feel could've done a lot more to expand on the stories / characters a bit more if they were even written up to about an hour each. If you like Yuzusoft's writing in general, you'll probably like Parquet. It probably won't blow your socks off, but it's worth the cost, especially if you pick it up on sale.

First things first, this is 99% a kinetic novel. You are not presented with any choice until the prologue in which there is branching into two endings that actually feel rather similar. Second thing is it's not much of a romance story, again, until the prologue. The romance part is very short and open-ended, which personally I don't like. Also I don't know what teenage idiots added NSFW, Sexual Content and Hentai (also FPS???) tags to this game on Steam as this is clearly not an eroge, I believe even the developer is specifically a branch studio that deals with non-adult VNs. The story is quite interesting, although sometimes is a bit difficult to comprehend, probably because of not the best translation. Speaking of the translation, there are a lot of weirdly doubled words and some typos, which I believe is subpar for a VN. Also I encountered at least two instances where they used a phrase "could care less" which is a misnomer. Overall in my opinion above average story in a below average game.

I dove into the story not expecting much, while not bad, it also didn’t quite reach its full potential. The character design and art style were definitely one of the strong points (like DAMN Rino's thighs look nice). Accompanied by catchy osts that complements the scenes, these elements sets the stage for a cute and fun read. However, the plot left me wanting more. It's not that the storyline was poorly crafted, but rather it felt rushed, and the ending was cut short. Although the characters were able to capture my attention and draw me in on their adventure, the ending just leaves me with the sense of dissatisfaction. In conclusion, it’s not a bad read, but it also serves as a reminder of what could have been something great with just a bit more story development. For those who can appreciate the design and music, I'd say it's worth a look. but be prepared for a plot that may leave you craving for more. This was also the first work from Yuzusoft that I've played, looking forward to playing more of their work. 6/10

Yuzosoft titles have always been a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, so how does Parquet compare? Starting with the positives, all the hallmarks of a Yuzusoft title are on full display. The visuals are spectacular, the overall experience is incredibly well polished, and the OST is both pleasant & well produced. It's not a surprise at this point, but it's great to see their presentation continue to be among the best of the best. The lead characters are also some of the best in a Yuzusoft title, and the premise of the story is interesting, & ultimately fulfilling with some reasonable highs throughout. However, its shorter nature & a few incredibly predictable twists make for an narrative that feels a little bit forgettable at times, though the characters are strong enough to carry the experience. Overall, it's a title that does more right than wrong, ticking all the boxes you'd expect from a Yuzusoft title, while sadly coming up a bit short narratively compared to their longer reads. Still a worthwhile read, but far from a great one.

The characters and writing are just as nice as what I've come to expect from the main Yuzusoft branch, but it feels kind of short by comparison. By the time the game ended, it almost felt like I had just finished the "common route" and then the individual character routes were cut off or something. Still I'm glad I finally picked up this game.
