Believe it or not, my dad used to let me play this when i was like 13-14 years old xD the only thing i was scared of was that head weapon since whenever you pull it out the character inspects it and i was terrified of it, shit was so scary to me i was forced to use only that shotgun weapon but oh well my "childhood" game, anyway the game itself is awesome and im glad i can buy it on steam to replay this gem like i used to before <3

Very cool horror shoot-em-up style game. I will say sometimes when it loads you back in, it'll bring you back in at the beginning of the chapter. And sometimes the game does crash even though I have the recommended specs.

Painkiller Overdose got a fair amount of flak when it first came out, much of it undeserved in my opinion. This time, you play as the witty dim-wit Belial, a half-angel half-demon hybrid who spent centuries in captivity, resulting in permanent brain damage where he can only communicate in pop-culture references and one-liners. Although his jokes can be cringeworthy, I find Belial to be an oddly compelling and charismatic character, much thanks to Nolan North's great performance. The story sees a shift from the fully rendered cutscenes of the original game to semi-3D storybook sequences, and much like the original game, the story serves little more purpose than giving you a reason to turn hundreds of dudes into swiss cheese with your arsenal of heavy weaponry. Speaking of weapons, the gunplay from the first game is mostly back. You've got your bunny-hopping and tarot cards, and the guns are reskins with new models and sound effects. Your shotgun is now a bonegun, the stake gun a crossbow, chaingun a machine gun etc, but their functionality is identical. There are some new, creative additions such as a severed demon head with eye lasers that scream your foes to death, explosive eggs and a nuclear waste launcher. The 16 new levels are made from the ground up with mostly new assets, and featuring unique themes such as ancient Rome, feudal Japan, a space station, a swamp (Miyazaki would be proud), a battlefield in the Civil War, a movie studio, the list goes on. Where Painkiller took itself somewhat seriously, this game goes all-in on the goofy stuff. The levels are fun, creative, colorful and crazy in all the right ways. They feel well-paced, and the level and encounter design is good. The soundtrack differs quite from the heavy metal tracks of the original game, instead opting for a more orchestral sound that wouldn't be out of place in a late-90's action show. Definitely less memorable, but decent. Compared to what came later in the series, Painkiller Overdose is a legit good game. It doesn't quite reach the heights of the original Painkiller, but it's a rock solid sequel that offers a fun and satisfying romp through purgatory. I've always had a soft spot for this one, and a recent replay all but cemented those feelings. Warmly recommended, especially since it always goes on sale for a dollar!

Unlike its predecessor, Painkiller Overdose commits the cardinal sin of being a sequel/follow up with an even more boring protagonist than the first installment. Now considering Painkiller ain’t known for its Shakespearian level of storytelling nor interesting character building, I still kind of warmed to the thought of a regular goon waking up in limbo running and gunning through infernal setpieces in gory abandon! Enter Beilal, a character that could have been plucked straight from the dreams of a secluded metalhead edgelord and splurt one liners like the 1980s never ended. Now in a way I kind of admire the audacity of it all but it quickly gets stale.. The game is basically a reskin of the original Painkiller with a few modern additions and walks that tightrope between intriguing and mediocre. Considering that the game began as a traditional mod of the original game that eventually got legs and ended up being financed by the publisher it is alright, but I have played better mods in my years on the globe. However, I still have a weak spot for this series and its quasi-infernal aesthetics, and I actually still find enjoyment in this game in its brutal simplicity. Yes, you still run around with blasphemic weaponry gunning down various denizens of hell, and you still get that glorious old school shooter feeling, even if it's just more of the same. If it ain't broken, why fix it? So the game is decent albeit not great. It is basically a ruggedly streamlined continuation of the first game and although it has some flaws it is also quite charming in its 90s gothmetal sensation. A weak recommendation maybe, based on my own love for infernal imagery.. However.. This game stands on the shoulder of a giant and if i would recommend one of them I would say get Painkiller: Black Edition first. If you find it to your liking, then get on with the entourage of other games in the series!

Concise reviews for the Painkiller series in order of what you should play Painkiller Black Edition : Great oldschool no messing around shoot things from point A to B using a variety of weapons, for such and old game the gunplay (especially the shotgun) is strangely satisfying. Painkiller Hell & Damnation : A remake of the OG and as a result, it is a solid entry worth playing, albeit similar. A lot of changes were made some for the best some watering down the experience, but ultimately if you like the the first game this is worth a play. Painkiller Overdose : Most significant entry after the original+remake, not as streamlined but does improve in some areas, mainly level/area design is quite varied and interesting. Decent-ish gunplay and still worth a play if you're somewhat invested into the series at this point, enjoy it cause it's a very fast downhill from here. Painkiller: Recurring Evil : Like drinking a lukewarm coke it's not like the actual technical gameplay is "bad" but it doesn't have the right conditions to thrive into anything enjoyable, just getting locked into a room and killing everything until you move to the next room. Rinse/repeat until credits roll. Environments are at least passable, and at least some green is present. Painkiller Redemption : just endless endless endless beige walls locking you into some sort of psyhoclogical torture method having to kill 1000 enemies until you are allowed to see your new mental confinment in the next beige wall with slightly darker textures. It's like recurring evil but i actually fell asleep playing this at one point. Painkiller: Resurrection : You'll need Painkillers after consuming this absolute pisswater, it's like everything wrong with modern AAA games with massive open worlds/maps with nothing interesting to do except wander to the next objective apart from this game doesn't have any of the triple AAA budget to draw you in with fancy graphics and animations so you end up with what feels like a really bad fever dream with game ruining bugs every so often.
