I was very surprised by how entertaining Overlord was. It was a game that I played long ago on the Xbox 360 but never finished, so I picked it up on sale on Steam to try and get through it finally. I didn't expect that I would actually like it so much. Overlord hearkens back to the days of gaming full of plain old fun, with goofy characters, a simple story, and a lighthearted setting where you can enjoy the simple pleasures of being a magical evil villain. It's scratched an itch that I've had for a long time and if you're looking for a fun experience that doesn't ask too much of you in terms of skill or attention, then Overlord may pleasantly surprise you like it did me. Give it a shot.

This is another great game from my childhood and replaying it as an adult, I still think it's amazing. It's funny and entertaining, and absolutely worth playing.

What is this game? "Overlord" puts you in the shoes of the well... Evil overlord. You control an army of minions and conquer the lands in your quest to rule the world. You have large amounts of weapon, armor, and moral choice, variety. There's 4 types of minions distinctly different from each other in use and look, and the enemies are also quite varied for an old game. Being able to decorate your tower is also a fun extra addition. Gameplay wise it's quite enjoyable, with the end game bordering on tedious. The worms and final few bosses were bothersome, and showcased a lack of clean minion control beyond guard markers. Which in tandem with aoe 1 hit kills became a bit annoying to deal with. -- Outside of that it's fun to figure out the puzzles the game throws at you and the requirements for every type of minion to solve these is nice. The AI feels dated, though their pathfinding is good. Red minions tend to get stuck firing at stuff and sometimes the camera will be dragged onto minions you've already recalled, which can be an issue in combat. Grinding minions is also probably the worst part of the game, as the only real way is doing arena fights multiple times. These rely on you beating up a bunch of beetles to get ~70 essence, which is not a lot when equipment can take up to 1000 minions to max out. Also having no reliable way in the field to get more outside of enemies can be annoying as a lot of late game threats will 1 shot massive groups of minions, leaving you with large deficits. Due to the knack for aoe enemies later on, you'll often be relying on brute forcing enemies with the overlord, which kind of invalidates the use for minions... More tanky enemies and less cheap aoe spammers would've been better in that regard. My final gripe would be that there is no map at all in the game... Which can get incredibly tedious when domains are massive and have little indication on the correct way to go. Often either requiring a guide or a lot of walking around to make sense. tldr; Gremlin spam simulator. Should you buy it? Definitely. Goes on sale a lot as well so 2 bucks gets you a good amount of play time.

I use to play this when i was a kid and replaying it now. it feels amazing. I would play it again! Multiplayer. I have not tried it out but i assume that it doesn't work.

"Does it work?" March 2024, Windows 11 - The game boots up great. I can play, I can save my game. No problem. Some people buy these old games and are blown away that they're old games. Upset that it doesn't hold up to whatever their idea of modern standards are. If modern polish is that important to you, easy - stick to modern games. Pretty silly and unfair to take a game from 2007 and criticize it for not playing like a 2024 game. Developers don't have time machines, so good luck with that. IMO it's nonsense to buy an old game and then leave a negative review because it doesn't play like new games, or because you had a personal issue with your computer when everyone else seems to be running it. _____ The game: You're basically playing as Sauron from Lord of the Rings, but you're set in the Fable universe. Best way I can think to describe this game's atmosphere. Raunchy Fable-style jokes, your alignment affects your appearance. You get spells, weapons, but your minions are the core of the game play really. As a 2007 game, this holds up very well. Loved it back then, so I booted it up and got sucked right back in without even meaning to. Anyway - it's a shame that we haven't gotten more games like this. The game has a lot of Fable-style humor and shenanigans that seem to have faded away form the mainstream games. Be prepared for a little bit of nuance with the minion controls. The game gradually expects more of you as you grow into being an overlord. I can't think of any other games that play like this. 3rd person adventure game with a small army following you around.
