A short 'choose your own adventure' style interactive fiction title, the story follows a physician that enlists in the British army in an attempt to escape the pain of his wife's death to disease. Once deployed to Zanzibar, you are pulled into an investigating of a terrifying and deadly spreading disease. As you dive deeper in your investigation you learn the disease is tied to a secret occult cult. The story has heavy lovecraftian inspirations. As you play through the game you can upgrade various stats which are used to complete certain actions in the game. The stat checks can open up minor story changes and unlock achievements. Failing these stat checks generally has minor impact on the story, it's mentioned sometimes that your character was 'injured' but I couldn't tell what if anything this actually did. The story is also very linear with some railroading with one main story path with small changes to what happens to characters and events in that path. So this leads to replays for different endings feeling a bit too similar. There is a skip seen text option through which helps to skip through the story quickly and see the new text you haven't seen before. The UI is very smooth and clean and some nice art and presentation to go with the text and I enjoyed the overall story and themes. 7.5/10
Do you have guts to fight or will you succumb to madness ? I really enjoyed reading/playing the two stories of [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/668590/Omen_Exitio_Plague/]Omen Exitio: Plague . The main story has a rich and detailed narrative path, while the side story is the icing on the cake : short but intense, delving into a gore-filled Lovecraftian madness that really sealed the deal for me. Don’t expect to have an enormous impact on the story, but don’t underestimate the repercussions of your choices either. It’s actually much more complex, with a lot of different texts and routes revealed when you replay the game (which I found myself doing a lot while trying to get all the achievements). It has a nice old-school vibe, the music is fitting, and the traditional art (made by humans) is beautiful. So for me, it’s a thumbs up !
