This game is ok/normal. Is this what being high looks like?. If so, it's scary. The game is pretty decent, I liked the vaporware atmosphere and it does get somewhat spooky the longer you play but it's no horror masterpiece by any means. It's pretty short too so the horrible controls don't overstay their welcome. 7/10

Quick warning before getting to my review - please check the Mature Content description on this game, if you're not in the best head space I'd maybe wishlist this and come back later to play it. OK/NORMAL doesn't really have much of a story-line that I can reasonably pick up on, but it's interesting and frustrating at the same time. There's a lot of things I like about this game and don't like about this game. For how short and cheap it is though, I'd say it's worth it. Pros: • VERY neat graphics • I like the approach it had with it reading my computer's name and time to include it as part of the game • Love the lil cloud dude, homie's chill and has the best intentions • Most of the levels are fairly easy to navigate and get through Cons: • I'm not a fan of the camera angles+control handling, ESPECIALLY on that god awful platforming level • Sometimes it was very unclear what your goal was or where to go so you'd just endlessly roam around, which got boring after a while and this was especially a problem in the key and final area with the spikey eye boys.. • Ending was a tad underwhelming, but I do like the twist it gives you to some degree • Too short, but I understand it did describe itself as a short game (this isn't an issue the dev did, I just wish it had more content, just feels like something was missing to really seal the deal. Overall, for $3 - this is a game I can kind of recommend. If it even looks somewhat interesting to you - get it! It's a neat little game. I just really think there's more it could've done overall. As a side note, there's only 4 achievements - if you're someone who cares about or really likes to achievement hunt till completion on a game, then do yourself a favor and look through the steam guides on it because you'll likely miss one like I sadly did and had to repeat most of the game again! I usually don't like to use guides whatsoever, but this one unfortunately needed one for my play-through personally.

This may very well be the first time I’ve played a game where I didn’t enjoy it - and yet, that was the POINT of the game. This psychedelic game is unlike no other I’ve played - making it tough to finish in a way I haven’t seen another game try. It’s indescribable.

Lots of fun! A really good game if you're looking for something simple, but with a lot of character, definitely would recommend.

OK/Normal is an ā€œLSD Dream Simulatorā€ developed by 98 Demake, aka Toni Kortelahti, released in June 2018, a couple of months before the release of SEPTEMBER 1998. 98Demake is a developer whose mostly known for creating short form trailers of modern games and what they would be like if they were made in the style of Playstation 1 which I loved when I was younger. Again, there isn’t really much I can say as they’ve mostly kept a pretty low profile (though through reading a review he had attempted to make a similar game called Bvoid?) but I learned about this game through paying attention to the 98Demake youtube channel and wishlisting it before buying it in 2019 and streaming it for a friend in October 2020. Only recently have I put it on the list to stream it for my usual Saturday person, playing it alongside Eschaton and That Which Gave Chase which I both bought around Christmas time last year. How does it fare up compared to SEPTEMBER 1999? Well, it’s more of a game compared to the last title but how effective is it? What’s the plot? The hell do I know. You play as a floating statue and you get followed by a cloud who sometimes encourages you and sometimes spouts off depressing lines like ā€œYou know I don’t need you right?ā€ and ā€œIt’s the Spinal Fluidā€. Screw it, tying this into the atmosphere section, the whole vibe gives me this sort of analogue for drug use? Perhaps it’s saying that the internet is a drug? Perhaps it’s saying nothing and the PS1 style graphics mixed in with the G-Mod pink missing texture stuff is just an excuse to create an LSD Dream Simulator styled game. It does some meta stuff as well like digging through your computer folders and addressing you by your PC name as well as converting whatever time you’re in to military time for a section. Atmospherically it’s insane and somewhat incomprehensible, though in an ironic twist you can sort of maybe see what 98Demake is trying to do? Like the color palette is freaky as hell; sometimes it goes with a pink tile and a blue background with various shapes, and then it’ll switch to dark blue and just cut out all the music for this depressing atmosphere, before switching to straight up red and black for this 3D styled Virtual Boy looking segment mixed in with segways to corrupted walking sections or hallways covered with doors. It’s trippy as hell and I enjoyed it, and mixed in with that sound design? Madone it’s good. Between the Animal Crossing styled gibberish speak, the sounds of chewing everytime you chomp down on some pills or a bucket of water or the jumping sound that feels like it comes straight out of a retro arcade machine is amazing. The soundtrack is tight too, with the main menu theme and the actual theme itself (links below) being highlighted though I haven’t seen anything in terms of playlists or compilations for this game. I haven’t even heard of the musicians before (ex. Karma-Ron and hello_flowers) but what I can say is that the seven musicians that contributed to the game created a cohesive vaporwave 90s sound that I love. The gameplay is very minimalist, the basic gist being you collect a bunch of items (ranging from food, water and also what looks to be drugs) before moving onto the next stage. You could say that it’s sort of a walking simulator except you play as a statue that floats, and also there’s a platforming section or two. Sometimes you have to dodge enemies as well or else you die, though in these sections you don’t really lose anything in the way of time so it’s not a huge deal. The only real section that I could complain about is the section where you have to find six keys over a large space, which since you can’t really see that far ahead it’s a bit frustrating retracing your steps and trying to find whatever the hell key that you missed. Other than that, the most interesting thing about the gameplay are the controls. For the most part it’s simple if you play with a controller like I did. I moved forward with the left thumb stick and move sideways with the right thumbstick so in essence I’m using both to move my character. It’s a bit awkward at first but it takes a bit of getting used to, though I didn’t even know ā€˜til more than halfway through the game before realizing pressing Y gives you a first person mode to look through. It’s a nice touch and luckily if there’s any difficulties with controls you can check it out in the pause menu I’m pretty sure. The only other thing I can think of for this section is that once you beat the game, it kicks you back to the pause menu with the option ā€œContinue?ā€. This isn’t a real option as it says you have no save in your memory card, it’s a bit of a funny troll as this game is honestly moreso one of those ā€œplay it onceā€ kind of games, along with the fact that it ties into the game corrupting itself. OK/Normal is a short and sweet horror game inspired by the likes of LSD Dream Simulator (hence the reference) and violent depressive acid trips with a minimalist gameplay style and a sweet retro sound design. The game is something that I’ve seen dubbed a ā€œvaporwave nightmareā€ and honestly while I don’t feel the game is ā€œscaryā€ enough to be a nightmare, it’s certainly unsettling enough between the visuals and the sound design to give you a memorable experience. The game costs around 3 dollars or so to buy for a 30-40 minute experience that while maybe a tad bit confusing, provides a smaller horror vibe that I personally felt was worth the time even if I didn’t feel much of anything by the end. 98Demake himself would go on to disappear for a long time after releasing SEPTEMBER 1999 before releasing one last video which I liked. I also said that I was in his discord but it disappeared and that he hasn’t been around too much but I hope that he makes a comeback soon because he’s someone who I think could really flesh out the concepts that he’s already created into something even bigger than before.
