Better than Octopath 1 in terms of game play in pretty much every way, but I liked more of the individual characters of 1 than I did 2. However the cast in 2 has much more opportunities to interact with each other, and the Quality of life features makes it hard to play 1 after playing 2. I recommend trying out both games, but definitely recommend playing the first game before this.

A Journey Worth Taking OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is a stunning JRPG that masterfully combines its unique HD-2D art style with refined gameplay mechanics. As the successor to the acclaimed first game, it delivers a captivating experience with deeper storytelling and enhanced world-building. Having played the first game, my expectations for the sequel were higher than most, which inevitably influenced my evaluation. Strengths OCTOPATH TRAVELER II shines in several areas that elevate the overall experience: āœ”ļø Improved Narrative: Each of the eight protagonists has a distinct story that feels more interconnected and dynamic compared to the first game. The "Crossed Paths" feature, which facilitates interactions between characters, was present in a limited form in the original game but has been significantly expanded here, adding more depth to the stories. āœ”ļø Stunning Visuals: The HD-2D art style has been further refined, blending pixel-perfect character sprites with beautifully rendered environments and effects. Itā€™s a visual masterpiece from start to finish. āœ”ļø Enhanced Combat System: The Break and Boost mechanics return with more depth, making battles both strategic and rewarding. New additions, such as Latent Powers, add another layer of tactical decision-making. āœ”ļø Open Exploration: The non-linear progression allows players to explore the vibrant world at their own pace, fostering a sense of freedom and discovery. āœ”ļø Outstanding Soundtrack: The orchestral score perfectly complements the emotional beats of the game, from intense battles to serene village moments. Weaknesses Despite its many strengths, the game does have some flaws that could affect the experience: āŒ Grindy Gameplay: Leveling all eight characters can sometimes feel repetitive, especially for players who prefer a more streamlined experience. āŒ Disconnected Storylines: With eight separate stories, the quality and pacing of the narratives vary greatly. Some arcs feel drawn out, while others rush through key events too quickly. āŒ Pacing Issues: The combination of lengthy grind phases and isolated storylines creates uneven pacing, occasionally disrupting the flow of the game. (Not) Recommended for Recommended for: ā€¢ Fans of classic JRPGs who value deep storytelling and strategic combat. ā€¢ Players who enjoyed the original OCTOPATH TRAVELER or are drawn to unique art styles. ā€¢ Anyone looking for a vast and immersive world to explore. Not Recommended for: ā€¢ Players who prefer fast-paced or linear experiences. ā€¢ Those who dislike grinding or managing multiple characters. Final Verdict Having played the first game, my expectations for OCTOPATH TRAVELER II were particularly high. The sequel builds on the strengths of the original, especially with the more refined implementation of "Crossed Paths." Despite minor weaknesses such as grind-heavy gameplay and disconnected storylines, the game largely met my expectations. For fans of the genre, itā€™s unquestionably a journey worth taking.

This is pretty much a classic RPG as you would expect, but improved in many ways not only from those games of yore, but from the first entry of the saga itself. I just HAD to 100% it to the very end and I had a BLAST at it! :) The first Octopath, amazing as it was, had some issues that made it be a bit far from perfect. For example, you never felt like the party connected with each other, well... because they really didn't. It was like playing small stories that were all but interconnected, so the characters felt stale in regards to one another even if they were awesome and/or interesting by themselves. Then Octopath II came in and somehow managed to keep the "eight paths" unique to each other whilst finding the way to make the other travelers you play as have a say, a soul and a stage. The travel banter they have sheds light to their characters (hidden and true), plus things get even better amongst one another once you reach the end of the game -- and you'll have to buy this and see what I mean for yourself. Fights, as they come, are an improvement on classic RPGS and Octopath I as a whole. They can get pretty challenging if you come thinking it's just "get better gear and smackdown", but you actually have to think if the gear you got will combine well with what build you're having your travelers follow. And there are a LOT of options: a fun mix-and-match of skills, gear and strategies you can pull off to reach the end of the game with relative ease or a challenge brought upon yourself for underestimating it. And when you think it's all said and done, you got more challenges coming: one is Galdera, who is back from Octopath I to give you an ass-whoopin' and the Extra Battles, which bring back some friends from the past and strengthen the biggest bad for you to keep proving yourself . Pretty much a 9.5/10. My ONLY gripe with the game is that the music isn't as awesome as the first entry in the series (don't get me wrong: it's FANTASTIC, but the music from Octopath I was superior), but it quickly became one of the best classic RPG experiences I have ever had in all my life. What're you waiting for? Play it! You won't be disappointed!

First of all, for those who have been disappointed with the first game, let's mention that many flaws that were the subject of much criticism have been fixed: 1) the main characters/classes are much more balanced, although some remain more friendly choices than others; 2) that said, almost all possible character combinations are fully functional, both for combat and path skills, thanks to the very cool day/night alternation system (one of my favourite new feature); 3) there are no longer any "must-have characters" like Therion (those purple chests...), you can pick anyone character you want without worrying too much about any important needs; 4) although the eight stories remain for the most part "Disneyesque and simplistic", the plots and dialogues are less cringe, much more mature and way more diversified. Also, the general atmosphere of the game is overall darker, though the ''cute'' vibe still remains strong (best of both worlds!) =) ; 5) along with the stories, the game is way more rich and personalised both visually and musically, which eliminates a lot of tiring repetitions. In short, this title incorporates all the best elements of the first game and fixed all that was highly criticised: you will find nothing but a spectacular improvement in Octopath Traveler II. If you haven't played the first game, don't worry, the second one is completely fresh and is a standalone sequel to its predecessor. In all cases, a fantastic Square Enix game is waiting for you and you more likely won't be disappointed. I personally fully completed the game twice. For someone who grew up with cult games of the same genre, I have to say that even if Octopath Traveler II doesn't achieve legendary JRPG status like Chrono Trigger or even FFVI, the hundred-odd hours it demands are well worth the investment. A 100% must-play if you're really into old school JRPGs with simple, short and immersive stories. If you're new to the genre, I'd say it's a great starter for you. Then there's Chrono Trigger. ;) 9/10

Played this mainly on the Steam Deck OLED. I want to start by saying that this is one of the best games in any genre that I have played for a while and I started directly with OT II without having played OT I before, if you're a JRPG fan then this is going to be a gem. I had this game on my wish list for a long time and just picked it up on a 40% sale a few weeks ago and regret not having picked it up sooner. Definitely worth it even at full price. If you're looking for a game that will keep you engaged for a long time this is it. I've been struggling to find a game that will keep me engrossed after BG3 and I haven't been able to put this one down, already racking up 60 hours of playtime in 2-3 weeks and not even halfway to finishing the game. The storytelling is excellent. The individual characters' stories are engaging and moving, making you feel invested in the characters. The combat system is typical of JRPGs yet no so convoluted. There's an option to speed up battles which is particularly useful if you're grinding to get the last few levels required to reach the 'recommended' level for a particular story or dungeon. The music in this game is amazing. The composer has done an absolutely incredible job. I've had to add a few of the tracks from the game to my Spotify playlist and have been listening to them on repeat. The Song of Hope is my personal favourite. I played this game on the Steam Deck and it's perfectly suited to it. Runs perfectly at 45fps/90hz and a TDP limit of 8 giving around 4 hours of battery life. I tried playing it on PC at full 1440p/60fps at high settings but the difference is barely noticeable and it's much more fun to play on the Steam Deck. In a nutshell, it's one of the best games I've played for a while.
