First of all, for those who have been disappointed with the first game, let's mention that many flaws that were the subject of much criticism have been fixed: 1) the main characters/classes are much more balanced, although some remain more friendly choices than others; 2) that said, almost all possible character combinations are fully functional, both for combat and path skills, thanks to the very cool day/night alternation system (one of my favourite new feature); 3) there are no longer any "must-have characters" like Therion (those purple chests...), you can pick anyone character you want without worrying too much about any important needs; 4) although the eight stories remain for the most part "Disneyesque and simplistic", the plots and dialogues are less cringe, much more mature and way more diversified. Also, the general atmosphere of the game is overall darker, though the ''cute'' vibe still remains strong (best of both worlds!) =) ; 5) along with the stories, the game is way more rich and personalised both visually and musically, which eliminates a lot of tiring repetitions. In short, this title incorporates all the best elements of the first game and fixed all that was highly criticised: you will find nothing but a spectacular improvement in Octopath Traveler II. If you haven't played the first game, don't worry, the second one is completely fresh and is a standalone sequel to its predecessor. In all cases, a fantastic Square Enix game is waiting for you and you more likely won't be disappointed. I personally fully completed the game twice. For someone who grew up with cult games of the same genre, I have to say that even if Octopath Traveler II doesn't achieve legendary JRPG status like Chrono Trigger or even FFVI, the hundred-odd hours it demands are well worth the investment. A 100% must-play if you're really into old school JRPGs with simple, short and immersive stories. If you're new to the genre, I'd say it's a great starter for you. Then there's Chrono Trigger. ;) 9/10

Played this mainly on the Steam Deck OLED. I want to start by saying that this is one of the best games in any genre that I have played for a while and I started directly with OT II without having played OT I before, if you're a JRPG fan then this is going to be a gem. I had this game on my wish list for a long time and just picked it up on a 40% sale a few weeks ago and regret not having picked it up sooner. Definitely worth it even at full price. If you're looking for a game that will keep you engaged for a long time this is it. I've been struggling to find a game that will keep me engrossed after BG3 and I haven't been able to put this one down, already racking up 60 hours of playtime in 2-3 weeks and not even halfway to finishing the game. The storytelling is excellent. The individual characters' stories are engaging and moving, making you feel invested in the characters. The combat system is typical of JRPGs yet no so convoluted. There's an option to speed up battles which is particularly useful if you're grinding to get the last few levels required to reach the 'recommended' level for a particular story or dungeon. The music in this game is amazing. The composer has done an absolutely incredible job. I've had to add a few of the tracks from the game to my Spotify playlist and have been listening to them on repeat. The Song of Hope is my personal favourite. I played this game on the Steam Deck and it's perfectly suited to it. Runs perfectly at 45fps/90hz and a TDP limit of 8 giving around 4 hours of battery life. I tried playing it on PC at full 1440p/60fps at high settings but the difference is barely noticeable and it's much more fun to play on the Steam Deck. In a nutshell, it's one of the best games I've played for a while.

10/10. Great sound track! Graphic is pixels but done really well. However, gameplay is where it's at! For every NPCs you can - Mug or trade for better items. - Interrogate them for treasure location. - Hire or lure them to fight for you. - Beat the shit out of them to learn new skills. Capture mobs and bosses to fight for you. Side quests feel rewarding. Map exploration feels rewarding. Bunch of classes and weapons and skills and passives to mix and match for your party comps. So, many, things, to, do. And it's not even grindy at all. The best thing is? The game is actually challenging, and bosses are really tough, especially the secret ones. Every effort to build your team matters a lot! Honestly, this game feels more open-world than most of the self-proclaimed open-world games out there haha. Half of the storylines are bad, and the other half are exceptional.

Have never bothered to write a Steam review. This game deserves it. Oh boy does it deserve it. I've played games since the very beginning. As an older gamer, I've pretty much seen it all, and this one is special. <3 First things first, Yasunori Nishiki's soundtrack is on a level I never expected to find in a game. There were a number of moments where I stopped just to listen to whatever incredible track was playing (there are many incredible tracks). Nishiki's command of different musical styles and his ability to integrate them together are special. A true generational musical talent. Next, the artists took the 2.5D graphics to the next level in this game. The variety of environments, the attention to detail - everything visually is fantastic. If you were wondering what the pinnacle of pixel art looks like, this is your game. Moving on - the characters each have a ton of personality. They have unique stories that vary in theme, keeping the story interesting and moving along. The pacing of the game is significantly improved from the first game. However, as an older gamer, I didn't have an issue taking the game slow and really seeing all there was to see. With this play style, I was always more than ready to tackle the next challenge as far as the pacing went. The combat system was satisfying, with a lot of room to experiment with different group and job comps. Boss battles especially could be intense and challenging. Finally, there is an "intangibles" category that is hard to define but this game just wins in spades. This game is just crafted with so much love and care for YOU, the gamer, to enjoy. No DLC or microtransactions bull. Just a group of incredibly talented professionals who clearly loved what they did and wanted to bring YOU a wonderful experience. Play it. You will not be sorry!

Some people will say that Octopath Traveler 2 is just like the first Octopath Traveler, but with a new coat of paint. Others will state that it is a vastly better experience. Both would be right. You don't need to have played the first Octopath Traveler to enjoy this game. But you need to like turn-based J-RPGs with a lot of story, and old-school pixel-art. If you do happen to have played the first game, then let's go down memory lane a bit...My opinion of the first game is mixed. Octopath Traveler's whole concept is : 8 separate stories, each with one among 8 characters as their main and sole protagonist. What brought them together? Not much, just the need to travel in a group in a dangerous world. And in the end, maybe, if you were tenacious enough to go through some optional sidequests, quite a lot of farming, and a gauntlet of 9 bosses with no saving point, the reveal that they were all more or less part of a bigger picture. Intriguing, interesting even, with a refined combat system and a world open right from the get-go...but very flawed, to say the least, to the point that I was skeptical of this very concept. After all, one of the things I personally enjoy the most in J-RPGs is how the characters feel as a group, the interactions between them. So a whole game where such interactions are mostly implicit, where there are 8 main characters and no support character...I could understand the aim, to have all 8 characters be developped equally, to present something of an anthology of 8 stories, and I enjoyed it...to a point. I could never finished the first game. Ultimatly, I think this is because it is very, very, very formulaĆÆc, and thus predictible. 8 characters, 8 stories, each divided in 4 Chapters, each one consisting of town exploration, dungeon, boss. Rinse and repeat. Same for the world, 8 regions, each with 3 areas of increasing difficulty, each area with 1 town. Rinse and repeat. 8 classes, 4 secret classes, each garded by 1 boss. Rinse and repeat. And I already spoke of the infamous true ending. So, I won't lie, I was still skeptical when I started Octopath Traveler 2. How could such a flawed concept be improved upon? Well, turns out, you need a lot of changes, some big, but others surprisingly small. What I really want to point out is that, this game is truly the same concept as the first : 8 separate stories, each with one among 8 characters as their main and sole protagonist, brought together only by the need to travel in a group in a dangerous world, with an ending tying everything together. But now, it truly works. Because the common ending isn't secret now. Because it is better foreshadowed. Because there are more interactions between the Travelers. Because the whole structure of the game is more organic, some stories have branching paths, more or less than 4 chapters, some chapters don't have any Boss, some have several...Because each character truly plays differently now. No, it's not a perfect game. But it is special, to me at least. Here is what I have to say about Team Asano, the developpers of this game : it takes a very special mix between confidence and self-reflexion to keep a heavily criticized concept and repeat it while also listening to the critiques and improving it to such a degree, especially since said improvements are mostly small, but decisive by their sheer quality and number. I couldn't finish Octopath Traveler, despite its qualities. I 100%ed Octopath Traveler 2, despite its flaws.
