Awesome tactical deckbuilder Roguelike, the best of it's genre Id say. Only con is runs are 2 hours + because of all the decisions. If you liked Into the Breach it scratches the same itch by being more deckbuildy.

“Yeah, but can I get back to sleep?” -Lady after the 10th tutorial Oaken takes various elements from many games and condenses them into a more compact, arboreal-themed experience. X-Factor For some, the complexity of the gameplay and its many mechanics opening opportunities for smart plays is what makes this title stand above others. It’s also not only a card game but a strategy one: Gameplay It’s a mix between a card game and a strategy one while spotting roguelike elements, I’ll explain the mechanics. In your run you’ll be able to choose what kind of event to encounter that vary form battles to finding trinkets and improvements In battles you’ll start with you main piece on a field made of hexagons, and from here you can play cards to add pieces to the playing field or do other effects. Pieces have a strength and life score, and normally can move one space away and do an attack on the turn following their summon. Pieces are quite nuanced from having the ability to move one more space, damage surrounding spaces when summoned, or able to target on a line instead of proximity. An additional mechanic comes from the direction the character is facing, as you’ll be able to attack and counterattack on three out of six sides, so positioning, turning and outflanking the enemy without having them do the same to you adds another layer of depth. You’ll gain more “energy” to use your cards as the turns go on, letting your turns start off slow while ramping up in power. One last thing comes from environmental effects, maybe one feld has holes you can’t traverse, or obstacles that when attacked damage the surroundings, always things that both you and your enemies can use to outsmart eachother. Story Something about journeying downwards to the roots of a magical Oak while battling creatures that have lost the guidance of a mysterious force called the voice. Downsides While variety through multiple effects is cool, maybe having 8 character on the field all with multiple effects, modified by trinkets and specific field effects while having to keep in mind enemy reinforcements plus casting costs might be a bit overwhelming. Many times the best tactic is to just overcrowd the field with units and always attack from the back with no retaliation from the enemy’s part. Despite how much I like the arboreal theme, many times the design seen from a top-down perspective makes them look like the same jumble of brown and green polygons. It’s a shame that the genre has been saturated to the point of diluting otherwise great games into barely known and outright disliked titles because “muh unoriginality”. Oaken is good, and with the many -50% sales it’s a great price for the content and quality.

Oaken is one of those hidden gems from a small developer that actually cares about their game and community. It has a fun gameplay loop with easy to understand mechanics; Difficulty modifiers to give yourself more (or less) of a challenge; A slapping soundtrack; And a wonderful art style. The price tag is worth it for a game such as this so long as you're a fan of the genre. - While the game has the "Deck Builder" and "Card Battler" tags, this is not really much of either, rather it is more of a standard rogue-like loot system of "Pick one of 3 rewards" which happen to be called "Cards". If you dislike these genres, do not let the tags discourage you.

It was overall a fun experience. There aren't enough roguelite deckbuilding tactical games out there, so when I saw the gameplay was similar to Alina of the Arena (another of the genre, though not nearly as pretty!) I decided to grab it during the spring sale. The combat can seem overwhelming at first, but you get used to it pretty fast and find there's very little luck actually involved in the outcome of most runs. Didn't take too long to 100%, though was sad to see only 0.6% have stuck around to see the true ending. So if you enjoy this rather niche little genre, it's worth grabbing!

Nice little game ! This is a deckbuilding game over 3 chapters per run and a final boss. Tactics are mainly based on good positionning on the few hexes map.
