I recommend but with some caveats. I really enjoy the overall gameplay, where it's fun to boot up the game on my Steam Deck and zone out while playing the game. Some of the characters are really cool, with my favorite one being the merchant whose health is a shared resource with the gold you pick up. It really makes you think about when to buy items vs. saving money to be able to have enough damage / health to survive. The main criticism is that the runs feel very similar, most of the enemies are the same (with different skins), relics are often repeated (especially at the start of a run), and bosses often have invulnerability windows to draw out the fight. The game is feeling really drawn out, but there's a lot here to chip away at over a long period of time. I'd probably buy any DLCs that come out because I do enjoy a lot of the core experience. Wishlist / Random thoughts: - I wish there was a way to customize runs without feeling like you take a disadvantage from gaining the meta-resource. - The Ragnarok mode doesn't really add enough variety to the levels other than "make it harder" - More Easter Eggs / Discoverability / Exploration things would be cool - A hero meta-level up catch-up mechanic would be much appreciated to cut down some of the grind - A "turbo" mode would be cool -- my runs typically take 20+ minutes. - A more intense 10-15 minute mode would be neat. Something that requires you to be really strategic with the places you go on the map as maybe you'd struggle to get to all the landmarks before hitting a boss. - Boss rush?? 🤔

One of the best Survivor games out there! I own at least 15 games in this genre including (of course) Vampire Survivors, Nordic Ashes does not simply repeat the VS formula. It makes several changes and, for me, the most important being - it rewards skill and strategy to a far greater degree than most others including VS. Excellent in game upgrade tree and rewarding permanent upgrade tree. Grinding is there but you feel like you are getting somewhere. Excellent game play balance and well thought out. 9/10. In my top five games along with: Vampire Survivors Rogue Genesia, Army Of Ruin Greedland Deep Rock Galactic Survivors (Would be up there but not enough content yet).

Highly Recommended. This is my favourite traditional style bullet heaven game to date. The only game that falls in this genre that I like more is Brotato but I feel that game is different enough from the genre as a whole that its largely its own thing. As a game clearly trying to be like Vampire Survivors, 20 Minutes Till Daw, Halls of Torment and many others...this is best version of that. Its hard to really explain why...I just think this hits that mostly mindless zen state game play with meaningful progression and yet offers enough engagement and choice to not get boring. Hours slip away playing this game like they would playing Diablo for example. I think the progression trees between runs are deceptively well made. The ultimate unlocks for them have a HUGE impact that you really feel even if on the surface you might not realise why. I really like how this game has familiar feeling runs rather than chaos of other games in the genre...here you typically have a go to build that you can then expand from rather than other games where you largely go with the flow of RNG. Great game. Admittedly it starts out off putting. I don't care for the art style of this game and those first couple of runs are GLACIAL in pace...it gives a pretty negative first impression but you really do slowly build from there to something that's a lot more fun.

FIRST OFF! The thing that prompted me to write this review in the first place! I left feedback expressing my very, very real frustration with how common it is in games to have arbitrarily event-locked skins for holidays and the like, running for limited time frames, ESPECIALLY CHRISTMAS ONES WHERE PEOPLE ARE SO BUSY, and consigning whatever attached content/cosmetics to the void until the next time the event rolls around... y'know, in an entire year's time. THEY MADE IT UNLOCKABLE YEAR ROUND, AND ARE GOING TO DO THE SAME FOR FUTURE HOLIDAY/EVENT SKINS THEY ADD! They didn't even resort to the classic excuse of "just change your PC's date bro"! This is something I want to see more of in games, taking how players feel about cosmetics seriously, especially when they're cosmetics in a single player game and thus absolutely should not be arbitrarily locked away in a vault! Now, onto the rest. So, I've been making some steady-ish progress, I'm usually pretty slow to gain momentum in Survivors-likes and chew through their inevitable meta progression unlocks. Even so, I can get a feel for if they 'get' the fun of a game like Vampire Survivors rather quickly, and Nordic Ashes has definitely accomplished that, albeit with quite a different overall feel. The game's more floaty, but I don't really consider that a bad thing - the way you move kinda feels more akin to some of my favorite flash games, rather than the old school NES kinda snappy movements that Vampire Survivors has. It works just fine and dodging isn't at all impossible because of it. The way you level up is the same, but how you spend those level-ups is quite different to Vampire Survivors - instead of choosing from the long list of randomized weapons you could possibly see per run, you pick from weapons and skills/buffs available within your chosen character's skill tree, which has to be filled out as you go to access more things. If you're addicted to the absolutely wide-open way your charcter could branch out in Vampire Survivors and hate the idea of going down a tree associated with each character, go into Nordic Ashes knowing this first and foremost! It has meta progression unlocks, lots of them in fact, and they're plenty impactful, so no complaints there, either. All and all, a fantastic example of a Survivors-like, made by devs who actually care about what you have to say! If that doesn't deserve support, especially for a game so reasonably priced, I don't know what does!
