If you like RTK XIII's RPG elements, this game is similar. You get to do some city building early on, and carry it onto your main game. All about the "All Officer Play" mechanic from KOEI.

I made the mistake of listening to the reviews saying to get just the SOI version instead of this. Dont get me wrong i loved SOI, but i wanted to try this out because the thought of playing a subordinate appealed to me despite the warnings from others. So after trying it out i instantly got engrossed with running my own town and completing missions from the daimyo. I loved the change of pace of being just some underling moving up the ranks. I didn't see or got bothered by any of the so called negatives that others pointed out, and the little changes this game made from SOI is so tiny that you wont even notice it. Being an officer serving a daimyo adds such a great layer of gameplay, and you actually interact alot more with other officers in the clan, feeling like you all are working for the same goals. I went from just a lowly officer being put in charge of running my town being tasked with contributing to the clan effort, being promoted several times along the way to a regent, given command of several castles and fortresses with a mission to conduct entire wars against specific clans on behalf of the daimyo, i enjoyed this game alot more than i did SOI, if you like a bit of roleplaying aspect in a grand strategy game, i definitely recommend this, you will not regret it.

I like this game. Mind you, the last Nobunaga game I played was the original (I also played the very first RTK). Why do I like this? You get to be the officers (or even make your own officer). I like having the option of not being the big wig when first starting. It's kind of relaxing just plotting along, build your town/village and then venture off when your Daimyo asks you. A couple of switching clans later, persuading officers, and all of a sudden everyone is asking you to join them, or your retainer is telling you to strike out on your own. (With save scruffing, you can find out if breaking out on your own was a good idea - which wasn't for me... =P) I wish there were a few more subterfuge options like in TotalWarShogun - I'll need to go back to that game to see if you can just be an officer to start (kind of doubt it). It's just that that game felt like you have to really micromanage the fights. Here, if you don't want to, you don't (outside of the first few battles). I enjoy this game. Yes there's a newer one with better graphics, but I don't think you can be 'just' an officer there.

Sphere of Influence has two different games, with this being the mode where you can play as an officer or a ruler. The game is far from perfect, but honestly it is a decent game. There is a lot of micromanagement to it. Having to build buildings, assign officers to develop them, build castles, and the list can go on. The trade off is that it means that more of your officers will see use and maybe develop some of those bad officers into serviceable ones. (Or you can just delegate and hope the AI is good about using them, spoiler... it is not.) I have put in 500 hours into this game, and will probably put in more as time goes on, but due to the lack of controller support all of the clicking really screws up the arthritis I have in my hands. Even so, it is a really good game if you are into the series. If you asked me this or Awakening? Awakening has less micromanagement, but I think I would pick this one over it just based on overall game play and features. The higher difficulties can suffer from anti-player AI, AKA the AI will target you over other AI factions, but you can usually fix that by lowering the aggression levels while keeping their intelligence levels high. Not sure what kind of impacts that breaks down, but I'm sure that someone who knows more about the game itself can break that down for anyone who is interested. It's a solid 8/10. I took off two points because the house feature is nice, but it also cripples the AI because they do not get enough wood and iron unless you do a work around to give it to them. It was a feature that Koei really should have tested. It can also be harder to play as a smaller clan, but that is typical in most of these games. If you like Nobunaga's Ambition, then it is worth a try. Does it have as many as the old RoTK officer games? Hard to say. You can build your own personal village and it does impact it when you get a city to control, but at the same time it can make the game really unbalanced in terms of giving you all kinds of advantages over the AI. I like this one more than OG Sphere of Influence, but it really comes down to taste. There is no right or wrong answer, even including Awakening in that group. Each is like a different flavor of ice cream.

One of the best Nobunaga's Ambition. Better than Taishi. As fun as Awakening.
