July 2024
I've played many games. I have a library full of both major and indie studio games alike, jam-packed with simulator/logistics/management games. I need to say that News Tower, for all the simplicity of some of the core mechanics and gameplay loop, is perhaps one of the best management games I've had the pleasure to play. Here's why: a) The game gives you a good enough introduction to your core tasks, but leaves the rest up to you. The financial choices you make throughout (which neighborhoods you target for certain upgrades, who you hire, when you hire, and so on) are all fairly straightforward individually but weave together as a whole to render the main loop refreshing, fast-paced, and challenging, while never quite dipping into the realm of unforgiving. b) The main task under your purview, researching for articles and selecting their placement through an intuitive and rewarding combo system, provides a fun, ongoing minigame of "who do I send where to maximize my rewards/time", "where do I place/group articles to reap the full benefit", and, of course, "do I use one set/type of articles to cater to the readers or do I censor to appease the factions?" All of these questions engage with smaller, but no less interesting or rewarding, opportunities and games of their own. Honestly, the layered design here might well be called a masterclass in terms of the interaction effects generated while maintaining a robust, easy-to-digest presentation. c) The game does a good job of immersing you in the world you're meant to inhabit. Though the texts of articles are the good ol' lorem ipsum, the events you send journalists to, the headlines you generate, and the faction interactions that emerge all contribute to establish the epoch you play in thoroughly. Articles discussing Prohibition, the Great Depression (and economic aftereffects), and even things like LaGuardia's mayoral election campaign(!). Accordingly, even though the game is about publishing the newspaper and making ends meet at heart, it doesn't feel adrift from the world around it that you're reporting on. That said, there are some rough edges. A bit of micromanagement cheese can be had with paper deliveries at the eleventh hour on Sunday - please make the resupply personnel faster. I've made my paper exclusively a Sunday evening paper as well, despite the "ROLL THE PRESSES!" alarm you get - should this be a timed window on Sunday morning? You can't publish any day besides Sunday (at least, mid-way through a playthrough) - this feels limiting; if I have several stories sitting there that will be old news next week, let me publish several editions. The random chance events (lawsuits, mafia, injuries, etc.) can feel pretty harsh, especially if you're unlucky early in your run. Certain tags associated with particular factions feel like they show up at the very end of the news cycle - why do I always get those pesky Mayor/Mafia tags on Saturday evening? All in all, News Tower is a truly engaging, compelling entry. The subject matter is fun but not aloof, and the core loop of newspaper management holds well even after several hours. I strongly recommend everyone pick this game up for a try.

This is an excellent simulation management game with a very tight gameplay loop, and an addicting "just one more week" style that will have you playing until the sun starts rising.

Solid management game with some interesting features. I like the process of investigating, setting and assembling the stories, then choosing what to publish. It would be cool to see some more involved stories, that would take several weeks and multiple reporters to uncover, Chinatown type stuff. Maybe with a special edition newspaper released just for that story. I'd also like to see some type of effect your newspaper has on society, running bad stories on the mayor might see him replaced. Exposing the mafia might see them taken down, things like that. The building management is good, lots to unlock and balance, good planning required to lay out everything efficiently, and keep your workers happy. Still early access but quite a bit of content already. Excited to see how it develops.

I posted a negativ review before cause of no sound issues. Thru email i contacted the devs about it and that is where the magic happened: Inside an hour the devs reached out to me with a couple of solutions (it was a problem with FMOD). This is just outstanding!! Devs taking the time to help fix a Problem for just 1 player! You´re Awesome! For this alone you get a double positive rating! :D the game is quite good, too!! ;) cant wait for whats still to come in EA!

All the praise is deserved ... BUT. The only thing I don't like is the articles you finish researching at the front of the week will be old news by the end so sometimes why bother, and the bottle necks to get fresh news out fast right before your deadline a lot of times cannot be made so you're forced to run a lot of old news if you want a full paper. It only really seems to be a huge problem when you get the mission to not print old news. But it still kinda feels bad and feels like maybe old news shouldn't trigger until it's been around a whole week then disappears the week after. This way these articles you might really want to print are not old news before you even get a chance to print them. Edit: or possibly allow a special edition of the paper to print early before they become old.
