I've been playing this game since release. I always come back to it. It's a great dungeon crawl, amazing story line, fantastic character building, and the perfect solo D&D experience. The graphics are admittedly quite dated, but everything else more than makes up for it.

I've probably put 10,000 hours into this game over the last 20 years. There's just nothing else like it. No other game allows you to seemlessly build your own player-made quests and persistent worlds, and no other game gives you such easy, comprehensive DM tools in order to run adventures. And boy is it fun running adventures for other people. Give us a try if you're looking for a CRPG with a live in-game DM. The name of our PW is ALFA - Sea of Swords: Daggerford and Waterdeep.

Fully recommended. Important: I first refunded this game because of the, quite frankly, bad campaign. Then I saw a reddit post saying that the campaign isn't the *true* game. Rather, the community maps is where it's at. And I fully agree. To paraphrase what I read in the reddit post: "this isn't a game like Skyrim where you just jump into the main game and have fun, the main campaign here is pretty much just there to show off the game engine for the time. The real fun lies in all the fantastic community modules you can get from the neverwinter vault. There is a hall of fame section that you can download a bunch of well made modules from." This game is 100% worth it for just 5 bucks on sale, especially with the huge amount of content you get from the insanely passionate community! Haven't tried it but there is workshop support for easy installation of mods and community campaigns. I would suggest using NWNTool tho since it's super easy to use and hassle free, also everyone seems to be using it anyways so there's that. I was quite surprised to see an active online community in this game with persistent worlds that pretty much turn Neverwinter Nights into an MMORPG. Tried it out for a bit but I'm not sure whether it's for me or not yet, still really nice to have. Seems to be a "problem" (if you would call it that) with some of the big RP focused persistent worlds where a lot of the players don't RP in-game but rather in a discord server... didn't notice that myself but just a heads up! Anyways I hope that my review could give some good headers for people on the fence like I was for over a year. Haven't noticed many reviews that actually tell you the best way to experience this game so I felt the need to give some directions. In the end, it's up to you to determine for yourself how you prefer to play the game, if you wanna complete the campaign then go ahead. Don't let me deter you with this review, I'm just writing about what made me come around to enjoying the game.

I was a small child that couldn't read when NWN came out but played it a lot despite the fact. I'm happy to say that, after 22 years, I can finally read.

I bought this game because I figured I could leave it running behind a more recent AAA title I like with very long load screens. At first, it was a fun way to pass 5 minutes while waiting for the campaign map to load after battles, but before long I was playing this and leaving the other, modern game in the background. The story of the first module is pretty weak but easy to follow and even fun if you can just take joy in clearing out dungeons and really working hard to keep the story progressing. It's not good per-se but it's easy to follow and there are awesome successes and failures. Like a true, classic RPG, it's the diversions - the unexpected stops along the journey - that make the long road from lvl1 scrub to lvl 100 Mafia Boss so rewarding. What actually feels good about this game is the ambiance. I noticed this walking through the streets of neverwinter. Instead of music there's a symphony of violence: the quivering voices of frightened people begging for their lives, screaming in fear or pain - the cacophony of large objects, including fellow human beings being beaten and tossed against the floor and off the walls - paired with the chunky-yet-aesthetic world design of the early 2000's at it's banal finest. I was completely immersed: the action on-screen was standard RPG stuff, point-and-klick, kill zombies - but the sounds of people being brutalized within their homes as I rushed through city streets I hadn't quite memorized: that's what stuck with me. In my 40 hours I have only completed probably 25 - 30% of the main story, and as you may know, that is a very, very small fraction of the content available when you consider the base package comes with 3 sub-modules of very generous length, that most say are much better than the main model I can reference. In short, played this for the first time in December 2023, and it held up pretty well ~~ 20 years after hitting shelves
