An RPG that sees you hitting the streets of Shibuya and trying to survive the Reaper's game. It's a sequel to The World Ends With You though it is still very enjoyable without having played the first, even if I'd also highly recommend going through it. For those coming from the previous game you get to enjoy this game's rendition of returning elements, such as enemies and abilities, made especially interesting with the change to 3D (for the overworld and battles mostly, the game retains the visual novel style story sequences of the original). Newcomers can expect an adventure through the many cool and interesting locations that comprise Shibuya, that will need you to solve (fairly simple) puzzles and overcome increasingly challenging battles using your party's abilities. Combat in this game has you assigning each party member an ability, which also corresponds to a particular button, and you can use it a number of times before it has to recharge. Each type of ability has different mechanical characteristics and there are many variants of each with different stats that further change how they feel to use, so there's lots of room to experiment, though you can't have more than one character with a psych using the same button, which can feel limiting but is also understandable balance wise. You'll also need to boost your party's HP by levelling up and boost their stats by eating around Shibuya's many restaurants or equipping a variety of clothing items (that sadly don't change your characters' models). And as engaging as the mechanics are they definitely don't take a back seat to the story. It's very engaging and might even make one reexamine oneself, though it does make a few missteps compared to the previous game, and the characters and their interactions are always fun to witness. All of this served by a wonderful artstyle and absolutely killer soundtrack that really gives the game a unique vibe. Overall I strongly recommend it for fans of its predecessor and RPGs focused on both story and action.

Its not nearly as good as the original but its still pretty good, and considering Square Enix has a track record of their JRPG sequels being utter dog water, thats kind of a minor miracle. The big problem here is that nobody played this game. Know why? This game released on Steam on October 19th 2022 with no advertising after being Epic Store exclusive for about a year. Know what else came out literally the very next day and had plenty of advertising? It was that OTHER JRPG where teenagers run around japan using superpowers to fight monsters that only they can see. PERSONA 5 ROYAL. So yeah this game got absolutely buried because Square Enix is the dumbest AAA game company still active today, and i mean that without hyperbole.

Square Enix marketing absolutely failed this game. While it doesn't quite hit as deep as the original TWEWY, it's still a very effective story told with the help of some pretty clever gameplay integration. If I had a nickel for every time Tetsuya Nomura made a game about Fighting Against Fate (TM) I'd be richer than Elon Musk, so some of the thematic material (especially near the end, as you'd expect from a JRPG) is a bit boring and predictable. But NEO does succeed in tackling the core message of TWEWY (connecting with people) from a different angle: while Rindo isn't nearly the misanthrope Neku was, the struggles he endures with his larger social circle are quite compelling. The side characters receive varying amounts of development (mostly near the end of the game), but are all ultimately deeper than their dialogue quirks, which is much more than I can say for other games of the genre. The combat is certainly quite button-mashy, but it's designed in such a way that each of your 6 attack buttons (!) must be mashed/held/charged in a different way, so there is a kind of mechanical rhythm to fall into that's pretty unique to this game. The preparation elements of gameplay (pins, food, and threads) are all fleshed out even further from the original game. It's just as satisfying here. My only issues gameplay-wise lie with some questionable enemy and boss designs. NEO is, for the most part, an easy game (which I have no problem with, as you can increase the difficulty and lower your own level to gain more rewards), which makes it a bit jarring when an enemy on normal mode suddenly has a borderline one-hit kill with a surprisingly unforgiving attack window. The visual style is rather low-detail but is in my opinion the best possible way of translating the original's artstyle to 3D. Besides, this game's presentation is mostly carried by its art direction anyway. The character designs/outfits are top-notch; literally every character is drippier than a monsoon. Also, THE MUSIC. It is as good, if not better, than the excellent soundtrack of the first game. It's Linkin Park: The JRPG and it's freaking incredible. It also has Sho Minamimoto, who is the single greatest character in fiction!

Really recommend this game, especially if you've played the original TWEWY. It is similar enough to the original but has it's own perks with different abilities, sometimes the controls can be a bit difficult cause you're button mashing a lot and it feels very satisfying to do. Even if you haven't played the original, it's easy to enjoy the gameplay but you may be mildly confused by some of the storyline and the language used.
