I've been playing Nebulous on and off for two years (more off than on though). Firstly dispel any thought that hard-as-nails simulator, or that it would emulate real space combat, first it wouldn't be fun to have realistic space combat and second, if the game was realistic then everything will be a dull grey tube filled with liquid methane and given as many guns as it can hold ammo for. Second. The game is designed in the interest of fun. Although it would be remiss to say that if you start playing the game you will most likely die and "lose" a lot. It takes at least a hundred hours to get a full game-sense to not fly into a sneaky OSP ambush, or to not get tricked into exposing yourself to an ANS capital blob, many of your first hundred hours will be filled with trying to get into position, getting ambushed and dying. Getting good at nebulous is a matter of simply better figuring out what does and does not work. The point of this yapping is to state that if you don't like losing, or cant handle getting pressed by an enemy team, don't play nebulous. However if you don't mind losing, and can in fact learn from your mistakes then you'll enjoy the game. Thirdly the community is great. Unpopular opinion but pop down onto the discord, its full of friendly people and one imagines that to be thanks to Eridanus Industries' cultivation of a friendly community, even though there is a lot of first-time-player confusing terminology, its the most ideal place to learn must-know ways of playing the game.

Easily the most physically faithful and enjoyable space combat simulator/rts on the market. This feels like you're playing out battles from The Expanse, in terms of proper physics, realism, and epicness. I grew up hoping for a game like this; the developer fully delivered on their passion project, for which I'm eternally stoked. Do yourself a solid and pick this game up.

50 hours to learn, 3000 hours and an estradiol prescription to master. 10/10, would play again

This is the best real time tactical simulation I've ever played. Having worked in the defense industry, it's really clear this game has been developed to be based on real life mechanics projected into a sci-fi world. Details like angling your ship to effectively increase your armor thickness, to using ECM screens, to ECCM tactics like target painters, and the incredibly in depth missile creation system which makes you really think about how to mix seeker types to defeat soft kill (things like chaff, flares, jamming, and the like). Even scouting and information denial is a really important part of each match: the one I tend to focus the most on as a matter of fact. This game is incredibly in depth to say the least. The multiplayer community around Nebulous is small but dedicated. It's almost a necessity to join the Discord, as the meta for Nebulous is pretty well-defined. In fact, this is my biggest complaint about the game: there are a handful of players that have been playing for a couple years, that all know each other, and have long saved optimized ship configurations, missiles, anti-missile missiles, and etc. Although the community is very welcoming to new players, it's extremely punishing to those that don't know what they're doing. The game desperately needs matchmaking, but the community is simply too small to support it. There's no appreciable single player beyond skirmish matches, which will very quickly get boring because the AI is really dumb. Besides the learning curve and the multiplayer necessity, Nebulous is top notch. I probably spend more time in the fleet editor than I do actual matches. It's that in depth!

This game has indeed been taken over in the multiplayer scene by sweat-lords who, as another reviewer put it, "squeeze and optimize the fun out of everything". And, on top of that, there is no apparent additional content other than carriers to the game for the foreseeable future, meaning the aforementioned rotted multiplayer is some people's only thing to do in this game. However, I believe this game still deserves a positive review simply because of how fun it inevitably still is. Modding is active and plentiful, AI battles are simple but engaging, and custom rule-regulated matches with friends are still entirely an option. Personally, there isn't a single other game out there where I can construct my own modded Thanatos Class battleship from Halo to single-handedly obliterate anything it touches, or see how far I can make it against a swarm of AI frigates. If your only joy comes from playing against matches with a 3k pt optimized fleet then this game probably isn't for you right now, but discrediting the entire experience when it still has plenty to offer is neglecting the majority chunk of it.
