The perfect cozy game. All the other games in this genre can have you feeling alone/siloed, with no real reason to interact with townies. This is the ONLY game I've played that made me feel like my character was actually part of a real community. It's also the ONLY game in the genre where it felt like the quests I did actually had a real, lasting impact on the world and the people that live in it. 10/10. I wish I could play this game for the first time again.

This game is an improvement on My Time at Portia in literally every way, and My Time at Portia is a damn good game.

I really enjoy the game, but I do wish there were more clothing options like dresses, and more furniture options. I also wish you could put furniture on rugs.

This game might be my favorite cozy/farming/dating game of all time (Harvest Moon 64 was my first as a kid). I was wondering why I felt that way, and it's for a few reasons. 1) The NPCs have flaws and make mistakes. They aren't always "nice", they actually have personalities and don't necessarily get along, so it's not this sweet happy place all the time, they have worries and concerns of their own. It gives the game some depth. I like that they will initiate play dates or romantic dates, suggest things to do (Why don't we stop here and chat?) and they will even propose to you! In other games YOU have to always be the one to initiate stuff, sometimes I want to be wooed too! 2) The town grows and improves over time! And you, as a builder, actually feel like a part of that. It's so nice to be able to run around and see things that you have built or improved. 3) Dating is more realistic and fun. I like that I can date several people and then when you break up, it isn't devastating to the relationship, it doesn't ruin your friendship overall. They do get upset of course, you lose some friendship points with them, and even the people they are connected to, but they will still be friends with you. This allows me to really get to know people, see how they are romantically, and if I'm not feeling it, I can get to know someone else. The devs really nailed the relationships in this game and the world feels lived-in and dynamic. And the pacing is great, I don't feel like I'm rushing through the game, I can actually enjoy all aspects of it and feel like I'm getting a lot done with the storyline while I complete side quests, etc. I can't get enough of this game.

In some ways better and in some ways worse than the previous game. ✅ Graphically looks better than its predecessor but ❌ Desert setting is kinda bland and boring compared to a lush setting ✅ Combat is slightly improved ❌ Only slightly. Still pretty bad. Absolute clunk town. ✅ Better looking designs and models for human NPCs. ❌ Most of the non-cat/dog pets look kinda ugly or weird. ✅ Introduction of the water cost element is kinda interesting. ❌ Introduction of quality/refinement element is more annoying than anything. ✅ New farming system is much better than Portia's ❌ It's teetering on the edge of being a little overcomplicated however. ✅ Tons of story events and assigned tasks if what you like in a life sim is tons of story events and being assigned tasks. ❌ However if you want a life sim to mostly leave you alone and let you do your own thing, Sandrock may increasingly get on your nerves, since it bombards you with notifications, tasks, and obligations. Story events constantly interrupt what you're doing. They sometimes relocate you across the map far away from where you were going before the interruption and just leave you there. When you try to disable/unpin quest reminders, the game just re-enables/re-pins them back. The amount of interrupting events and nags and tasks and reminders and obligations it bombards you with is borderline obnoxious at times. If you're a loner individualist, your patience will be strained. As far as life sims go, Sandrock is strongly weighted on the side of being a "social simulator". If you don't usually care about that part of life sims so much, note this well. ✅ The game allowing you to complete requests by checking your ENTIRE inventory (i.e. carrying inventory plus every container at your house) so that you don't have to be carrying the exact items on your person to complete them is very, very nice. ❌ The game keeps telling me that I have a best friend named Nia and I have all these social obligations I'm supposed to participate in related to her but I have never met this person in my entire life. Imagine, dear reader, that I told you right now that you have a best friend named Wilbur and you're actually meeting him for coffee tomorrow and you have no choice in the matter. You might think to yourself, "Never heard of him. I won't be going." But Sandrock says, "No no no, he's your best friend. Off to coffee you go!" and you have to tap X to get through this conversation with this complete stranger / alleged "best friend" you've never met so you can get back to mining rocks. Listen, sometimes this game means well but is annoying. ✅ Lots of mini games and holiday/seasonal events to take part in. ❌ It can sometimes be unclear how these events work or how you're supposed to take part in them. ✅ Furniture and decorations look a bit better than before. ❌ Still the same stat bonus system on furniture from Portia that only encourages you to turn your house into a landfill for furniture instead of actually decorating it. ✅ Mines are improved overall. ❌ Still the same "week pass" system that kinda traps you into doing nothing but mine for an entire week if you want to mine. Can I just pay 40 gol per entry instead? I don't understand their insistence on the week pass thing. ✅ "Sandfishing" is a cute idea in theory ❌ Not that fun in practice though. ✅ The sandstorms are actually a pretty cool addition. ❌ Seasons are not very discernible since it's just brown sand and desert every day of the year. Portia felt a lot more like you would get random tasks from the townspeople sometimes, but it was a slower drip, and you could mostly complete them when you felt like it. Sandrock bombards you with constant INTERRUPTING STORY EVENT, DO THIS TASK BY TOMORROW OR YOU'RE A FAILURE type of thing and I wish it wouldn't. But this really might depend on what it is you like about life sims. Again, if you like tons of story events and unique things constantly happening, then maybe this will be amazing for you. But if you want to chart your own course and for the game to stay out of your way, Sandrock is going to get on your nerves a little bit. I give it a yes overall, but there are certainly things about it I would change if I could.
