Spoiler free doesn't state in detail any plot moments. Muv luv alternative is like the main course to the starters that are extra and unlimited. I realise that sounded a bit pretentious and I apologise for that but I felt it the best description. Muv luv alternative is the culmination of 2 whole games of characterization and world building. However it doesn't only rely on that in no way does it lack development of its own. It builds on the previous games characters expanding both them and the absolutely stark reality of the world even further and makes use of the most seemingly unimportant details of extra and unlimited. It really does feel like a well executed plan years in the making. Whilst it lacks a route based structure and choices are merely window dressing each character still gets something akin to their own arc and time to shine within it. Takeru in particular becomes a lot more likable which considering he's always been the worst part of each muv luv game to me thats a breath of fresh air. I wouldn't say he was bad in the others or he's perfect in alternative but it's still a night and day difference I feel like you can understand his mindset at times to a point when the game challenges it and tears it down it tears at you with it. Though he does have some straight up creeper moments which I'd rather didn't exist which weren't in the other extra or unlimited as far as I remember it has been a while. Id go further into the growth of each character which ones felt the most fleshed out etc but I feel they mostly got equal attention. Bias for ayamine aside that is.What's new is a lot of the characters get their development through the politics involved in alternative which weren't much present in the extra or unlimited well not to this degree. As a political thriller(im unsure if thats the right terminology and apologiseif it is not)it is amazing to me. Though its really my first vn with that so i dont think i can speak to it's actual quality with confidence until im more aquainted with the genre. Muv luv alternative also boasts insane production value it has multiple fully animated cutscenes,makes a damn good use of sprites and what almost feels like cinematography to make the battles feel very hectic like they should though i feel it comes at a sacrifice of descriptive writing in said battles. I prefer more text based fights in my vn but thats a personal thing.As a climax to the story of muv luv in would say it performs it's job remarkably as I said it builds upon and utilises all the foundations formed through the past games tying them together beautifully to create to me a beyond stellar and satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Not only that but I feel it retroactively improves extra and unlimited it doesn't solve their most glaring issues but it makes their strong points even more obvious. It is really the most you can ask for in a finale and deserves its status within the upper echelons of visual novels. So far its probably only beaten by tsukihime remake and i feel once i finish it higurashi will outdo it for me. Steins gate also gets pretty close to matching it at points. Though this last bit is purely based on the vn ive played im still missing a bunch of the greats. Anyway in conclusion muv luv alternative is a breathtaking experience more then worth the price and the prerequisite reading of extra and unlimited(which are better then people give them credit for). It is what i believe to be one of the best of the medium and you should most definitely read it if you can. Overall I'd give this masterpiece a 9 to 9.5 out of 10.

Oh my god. I thought I was ready. I saw multiple twists coming from miles away, and yet here i am. I'm still reeling from the consequences of beating this game a few hours ago. I will never ever forget this game. If it wasn't for the pacing issues, this would undoubtedly have been a big fat 10/10.

I've never ever in my life get traumatized by a video game to the point that made me think of dropping it. but after I finished it I realized that I experienced one of the best lessons in my life through out the pain and the crying and the suffering. Everything from Muv-Luv Extra, Muv-Luv Unlimited, Muv-Luv Alternative built and written very beautifully and brilliant. Every Character has it's story and hardships, and personality that develops during the story, with one of the best written protagonists. Every time I see an event or I talk with a character I learn something new, and I love and adore the cast so much and every interaction they have. I just wished this game had more high quality animations and cgs, but other than that the voice acting and the soundtracks are amazing. This game is truly a MASTERPIECE that toke a special place in my heart, I will not forget it, and I will keep carry everything I learned from it forward.

If you were looking for the best VN - your journey finally reached it's destination. Because it's not just one of the best VNs - it's literally the best VN. Unconditional №1 VN of all times. But I should make one important remark. I said it for Muv-Luv and I will repeat that thought for Alternative. You can see many people trashing Extra, calling it boring, mediocre, claiming that you just need to endure before Alternative it or even totally skip. And I simply can not accept and approve this. I have no idea how Alternative could achieve it's greatness without Extra and Unlimited. I simply can not separate Alternative from the trilogy. If you remove Extra and Unlimited - Alternative will simply lose it's soul. Characters need depth, actions need weight, events need proper background. You can't duly evaluate the choice if you don't know what's on the scales. Remove all this and you will just get trivial chomp-chomp, pew-pew and random sprites dying on screen. This is why, before you start reading Alternative, it is critically important to read Extra and Unlimited first. I'd even recommend to 100% them, because certain characters from 'secondary' (yep, exactly 'secondary', not secondary) routes in Extra, will play key role in the events of Alternative. You learn get all the context, all the motives and backgrounds, and even why simple 'bye-bye' sounds so terrifying. Only if you read Extra and Unlimited, you will get 100% payed off in Alternative. And again, the last but not least: spoilers, censored content and order of reading. You start with Extra, then Unlimited and only then you approach Alternative. Each subsequent VN tracks all your choices from previous VNs. The most recent ending in Extra affects the beginning of Unlimited, while the most recent ending in Unlimited affects the beginning in Alternative. Spoilers. While Extra and Unlimited, roughly speaking, have only 1 big spoiler per VN, Alternative, on the other hand, has tons of spoilers. Minor spoilers and bigger spoilers throughout the whole VN and one mega spoiler at the very end. That means? Avoid all ML related stuff. Do not read articles, do not watch videos, do not visit local community hub and also be cautious about certain Steam reviews, because some people are just casually dropping spoilers there. Cut content? Unfortunately Alternative is also censored. But, thanks to good people from the community, this issue can be solved. Just check specific topic on the Steam forum for ML (Extra, not Alternative) and grab both patches there. The first for Extra and Unlimited, and the second for Alternative. Now you are fully ready to start your exciting trip towards mental breakdown.

This VN is basically emotional terrorism disguised as a sci-fi story. It tricks you with slice-of-life shenanigans for like 100+ hours ( if you include the prequels, which you must ), then absolutely demolishes your soul with the most devastating plot twists known to humanity. I haven't felt this betrayed by a piece of media since my parents told me Santa wasn't real. The aliens are terrifying, the military tactics are surprisingly detailed, and the character development is deep. 10/10 would get emotionally manipulated again.
