as a game this is certainly a good time however there is are significant odds that you are metaphorically flashbanged by a loading screen of an adolescent in promiscuous attire and make you feel really sad. (or maybe it makes you happy but in that case we can't be friends i don't like you)

IMPORTANT: Mush Dash is best enjoyed with the Mush Dash Plus DLC! I explain more in "The Bad" section of my review, but do NOT get this game unless you can also afford the aforementioned DLC. The $2 price point is not entirely trustworthy. The last time I played a “rhythm runner” style game was way back in the day when Bit.Trip Runner was still a brand new game. But I can safely say that Mush Dash blows that game out of the water just on the premise that it’s a legitimate rhythm game rather than a sloppy, linear platformer with music-based elements, and after playing the collab levels that were featured in Rhythm Doctor, I simply had to check this game out. Muse Dash is colorful, fun, and energetic right from when you boot it up. Now I'm going to go more in-depth here than I usually do because I consider myself pretty well experienced with these types of rhythm games, so bare with me. The GOOD: + The music selection is honestly wonderful. At first I was a bit concerned that most of the songs would just be cheery, sickly-sweet songs that are bright and upbeat, but there's actually a surprising amount of variety to it. Trance, club, funk, disco, hardcore, speedcore, this game covers the entire spectrum of what I enjoy in a typical rhythm arcade title. + The game is simple to learn and pretty easy to get a hang of. Even less rhythmically inclined players should have no trouble steadily rising up the difficulty ratings at their own pace, which is honestly very good in terms of accessibility. + Some charts go beyond just playing standard maps. There's a good chunk of specialty charts that invoke interface screws reminiscent of LUA based charts from the ITG scene. Seeing certain charts have their own unique gimmicks on top of enjoyable music is simply a feast for the eyes. + If you're an achievement collector, Muse Dash offers a collection of fair, but challenging achievements that I personally feel anyone can attain once they've gotten to a certain skill level. There's no "ultra impossible" tasks that only a masochist would be able to get, just progress and milestone achievements that reward you simply for playing the game and getting better at it. The BAD: - Again, the full game is DLC. I'm honestly not sure what the intent was with this decision, but the base game is essentially "Mush Dash Lite," and has only a fraction of the game's actual content. If you want the FULL experience you'll want to purchase Mush Dash PLUS, which still isn't all that bad (you're basically paying at a slightly discounted retail price), it's just confusing that it's marketed as downloadable content. - Hold notes can be very confusing at times. In almost every other rhythm game the tail end of a hold note looks visibly different than what the head looks like, but here both the head and the tail look exactly the same. This can cause some confusion in the more denser charts and as a result the player may be tricked into hitting a note that isn't actually there and drop their hold prematurely. - The leaderboard system, quite frankly, sucks. If you've gotten 100% on a song for the first time you might have noticed that your score doesn't come anywhere close to the top scores shown on the leaderboard, despite hitting every single note accurately. This is because in addition to the game having hidden judgments that are tighter than the "perfect" timing windows a la Spin Rhythm XD, some unlockable character skins come with perks that artificially increase your score beyond the normal scope of what is possible. This makes character selection less of a cosmetic thing that personalizes your experience and more just an unnecessary "meta" that takes some fun out of trying to get high scores. The overall verdict? Despite its issues, it would be asinine for me to say that I didn’t enjoy the game, in fact I'd say this is by far one of the most enjoyable rhythm games I’ve played in recent memory. With the variety of music and charting styles, fun characters, and just flat out appealing art style, Muse Dash proves to be more than just its outward appearance, offering a fun and entertaining rhythm experience that I think will hook players of any rhythmic skill level.
