Initially the sheer amount of stuff to do was overwhelming. Farming, crafting, monster collecting, deck building, world exploration, getting to know the villagers, most games would pick two or three of these and run with it. This is definitely not one of them and yet it manages to succeed for the most part. The game starts out with a brief tutorial, then tosses you in the deep end. Early game consists of short trips off the island, looking for mines that hold resources to upgrade your tools, figuring out the battle system and raising villager affection. Slowly you'll make your way farther and farther from your home island, until you unlock the last form of transportation, this is where the bulk of the game opens up. It took a while for me to make the connection, but progression feels very much like Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The randomly generated map is divided into a grid, and most squares on the map contain an island that has monsters and seasonally rotating plants to collect based on the island's biome. They can also have a dungeon or shrine that contains treasure and equipment that help you reach new areas or let you create your own shortcuts. There are dozens of islands and while not all of them have something exciting, there is still fun in wondering what the next island may have in store. Story progression is fairly open ended, and the game doesn't do much handholding at all actually, which may turn some players off. The farming and crafting systems are very light, I didn't interact with them much at all. You get access to sprinklers early on and there are far better ways to earn money than growing crops. You can find many of the potions you can brew in chests, most of which become obsolete once you craft items to reduce elemental damage from harsh biomes. The dating sim aspects are totally serviceable, though the decision to bury lore about the world's history unless you date a specific character was kind of strange. Honestly I could ramble on about more specific likes and dislikes, but overall the game's ambitious scope doesn't hold it back too much. No mechanic is truly useless or frustrating, visually it is vibrant and pleasant to look at (though some character customization would have been nice), and the music did not play very often during my game but I also have no complaints there. Again, this is primarily a deckbuilder with a focus on world exploration, if that unusual combo sounds even kind of interesting then I highly recommend you check this game out.

Don't expect another Stardew, there are some similarities in quaintness and pixel art style but the farming aspect seems to be mostly an afterthought, you can get by just fine without farming at all. Where this game shines is in the exploration. There's a big map and while there are really only a handful of different types of islands they all have their individual quirks to explore. There are some slight balance issues IMO, relationships are slow to build but then suddenly move quickly and I was already married within the first year. Would be good to make it a little harder. Also marriage does not change the game that much other than that character hanging around in your house a bit. The other balance issues is that I find the card battles aren't THAT challenging, as long as your spirits are at a similar or higher level than your foe you will pretty much always win. It's also a very warm-hearted game with a lot of really nice touches, very accessible and welcoming to all people. Cute graphics, cute spirits, funny parts and one of the islands looks like Australia.

I disagree with the reviews saying this is a boring game; you won't enjoy it though if you don't typically play casual/stress-free games. This is a cute creature collecting game with farming, strategy, puzzles, and of course customizing your space with lovely decorations. The NPCs all have their own personality and there isn't any 'wrong way' to play the game. It's cozy and laid back. If you happen to 'die', there's no real consequences, you just wake up 3 hours late the next day and get whisked away by a magic man that brings you back to his chicken coop home. It's meant to be a relaxing, non-stressful game. If you're looking for something with difficult puzzles and intense battles with punishment for losing, this may not be for you. (Later game battles can give some challenge though such as needing certain creature types, abilities, gearing up with potions, etc.).

This game feels like if stardew and pokemon had a baby. If you like games like those and very cozy and laid back with no rush to do quest and unwind and relax this is the game for you. not very story heavy which i wish there was more of but overall a good game.

I really want to like this game, and I think it's very promising if you like creature collecting games and deckbuilders. However, the reviews and word-of-mouth comparing it to Stardew Valley only help create hype and inevitable disappointment, because the game has a few mechanics that it shares with Stardew, but they're not as central to the gameplay. In Moonstone Island you're a new Alchemist who sets off to make their own way. You land on Moonstone Island, and are tasked with exploring the uniquely generated map of islands around you to tame/banish spirits, collect moonstones, and fight bosses. Here's what I do like: - The art is simply amazing. Whoever did the art and design deserves all the praise, everything is super cute - Game settings such as gameplay difficulty, spirit spawn rate, and length of the day are adjustable in settings - Open world setting means there's a soft lock on where you can explore, but it's pretty easy to overcome if you like speedrunning To sum up what I liked about this game, unfortunately a lot of it is rather superficial. The design and art is great and it's a cute game, but the cons are really what contribute to the body and depth of the game. Cons: - Elements feel a little unbalanced. There's fire, ice, water, electric, poison, psychic and dark. Dark types can only really be accessed later in the game, and each element has a different style of dmg in combat. It feels like DoT damage (which is largely relegated to fire-type dmg and poison-type) is really broken in this game and way more viable. This is very obvious early-game when you're running into a lot of poison type spirits. - The NPC interactions have little substance to them. The dialogues and dates don't reveal much about the characters or lore, and it's really hard to make their hearts go up for some reason. I neglected this pretty much the entire game. - No spoilers on a major part of the story and quest, but completing it gave me no insight on why it mattered that I did it, what it meant for the island, the people, and the world. It just kinda happened and nothing changed. - For a game of its size, it has lag issues that I just wouldn't have foreseen. Sometimes when you're running or flying, it just doesn't really look smooth or it will lag, there's issues with crashing after you end or run away from fights sometimes, and because it's a relatively small game I just didn't expect to have these issues. It's not a huge deal, but it's noticeable. People on the subreddit seem to encounter it often as well and have convinced themselves that it has to do with their computers lmfao - Viability post-year 1 of the game. I'm almost through the 1st year of the game, which is where the story plays out. Not sure if it's viable to keep playing after that, unless you missed some completionist-related quest stuff during the 1st year. This isn't a huge con if the game itself had an intended fixed story progression, but if you intended to play it in a Stardew-like way where you can keep going hypothetically for years, it just doesn't have the same appeal to me because the main part of the game is taming spirits, not farming. The other things you can do in the game, such as farming and making concoctions are most useful to tame spirits, rather than selling them even if you technically can also do so. Idk I neglected the money-making part of the game because I focused more on getting money to spend to progress further in the game, rather than trying to maximize it for the sake of doing so. Overall I think the game has huge potential, however it feels half-baked in some of its components that give it depth. I wish the storyline would be more developed to pull the player in and get them invested, and give them a better sense of what they're doing there. It uses a lot of different gameplay elements that will certainly appeal to a bunch of people, but I think it's more important that these elements feel like they should be there. I would recommend this tentatively. It took me trying two times and some research to start liking the game.
