As a pretty average straight male that doesn't have much experience with visual novels, I booted this up to play with friends once or twice and honestly I had a great time. The characters are attractive and likable, the dialogue is punchy and funny and gets many laughs out of me, and the stat building is simple but still crunchy enough to give me something to figure out. The dialogue gets a little too referential at times, but it's still creative enough that you'll still get thrown curve balls that will at least get a smirk out of you. I would definitely recommend this game.

The moment my brother saw the shopkeeper for this game he decided that he didn't care about any of the standard dateable characters. Y'know, I first got into this game in 2018 when it first came out and I was still in high school. I kinda stopped following the franchise sometime around 2019. My actual prom was canceled because of Covid in 2020. I never dated anyone in High School, but it still felt weird that such a huge event was just... not possible for me. I didn't fully understand why this game latched onto my psyche when I played it for the first time. But when I tried out the sequels, I realized what had drawn me in. Prom was never going to be possible for me, irrespective of covid. There were a multitude of reasons that I wouldn't have enjoyed the same night as the other graduating seniors. Mental health struggles, sensitivity to loud noises, alternating discomfort and fascination with ideas of sex and romance, being unsure of a queer identity. But I'm not just saying that Monster Prom provides me with the escapism of an enjoyable high school experience. In fact, I think it might be the opposite. There's been a lot of discussion in recent years about what queer media "should" look like. The value of measuring good representation in terms of the morality of the characters. Whether "Comfort Media" is less substantial than something written to be dramatic. When I look at this franchise, I realize that queer escapism is not just "good things happening to queer characters." I want to get my hopes up and get rejected. I want to fail at social interactions. I want to have to deal with boring classes and annoying classmates. And I want the chance to be queer while doing it. Without any fear that my queerness is what is stopping me from succeeding.
