Playing offline didn't save my total playtime, my best guess is 7 hours? I also bought this the day before the remaster came out, and then just played the remaster, so I might miss things that first appeared in the 2017 version. Misao is another nostalgia stepping stone and another big "duh I was gonna play this" after narrative therapy. There are plenty of Mad Father connections, and a similar theme of bringing horrific truths to light, but in a school setting instead of a mansion. If you enjoy the original, there are a couple of differences and new content. Most noticeable to me is that the visual atmosphere of the school is darker making it feel more explicitly cursed. You're also (mostly) looking for Misao's belongings, which is preferable for people who are squicked out by the original, uh, key item hunt. The lil miscreant hunt is also new, and the option to play a masc Aki *feels* new (with a few dialog and attitude differences). For someone who hasn't played the original, you play as a student named Aki (who can be re-named) who, while getting ready for school, worries about a student named Misao that went missing three months prior. Paranormal events are ramping up around the school, and a few students joking about her disappearance almost seems to trigger the full effect of a school-wide curse, trapping those that had been in contact with Misao leading up to her disappearance. In order to lift the curse, Misao's belongings must be found. Aki/the player volunteers for the task, and pieces together what happened to her as the game goes on. If you replay it, you might find that some of the scares were foreshadowing and I love that. The game tells you outright "hey there's shocking content in here", and there is. The bullying varies in intensity. There are plenty of gruesome deaths that are played off in a funny way that reminds me of a Sierra game, but is treated more seriously when directly plot related. What's more is that, while there are scenes of sexual abuse, they aren't graphic (screen fades to black), lingered on, joked about (by anyone but the perpetrators), and most importantly, it's not treated like fanservice and the game focuses more on the "reasons" (gag) people commit assault, how the reasons are *far* less important than the aftermath, and how damaging it is for the survivor. I can't give too much detail without spoiling, but these scenes are definitely "make or break" when it comes to choosing a game, so I thought it was worth mentioning. Props for handling such a serious topic with respect. This is a good game. I played it as a narrative therapy task, because even though it's a good game and I think I found some healing in it, it's really painful. I would say this was harder to get through than Mad Father, because even though I relate to Aya, I relate a lot more to Misao. Playing as a masc Aki feels like trying to save a younger, egg-y me. TL;DR, good game, another "pick a good brain day," and if you relate to Misao, I hope you find peace. I'm not there yet.

Misao has always been a game that means a lot to me, seeing it start off as it's original counterpart right into a 2024 remaster has been something I couldn't even dream of knowing. Being a hardcore-ish fan, I've even pleaded some of my friends to join in and play the game as well, letting them either play it for themselves or let them watch me speed through it to show the story. My only gripe with the story itself is the truth sequence, whilst it's now displayed Aki feels guilt for the redemption of Kurata, I still feel like it was... very peculiar. It's the main reason as to why I don't like the protagonist in the first place. I like that it is an entirely optional part, but still, it's something that feels very distasteful for me. Seeing Aki forgive a full blown rapist simply for him being bullied and fugly in high-school is beyondd... confusing to me, and entirely out of character if Aki truly did want to save Misao. WHO GAF if it meant she would hurt others, she would already have learned from hurting people like Kudoh and Saotome... Very odd, but I don't let it get in the way for my love for Misao.

Classic horror game, super simple and a lot of the fun is seeing all the ways you can die. The 2024 remaster overhauls the game and really bring it up to par with Mad Father and Witches House remakes. All around good stuff.

Great little janky RPGmaker horror game. It's set in a Japanese school, where you and your classmates are haunted by a curse. You meet various characters and encounter puzzles and horrific monsters/situations as you try to uncover the origin of the curse. The presentation is simple but it works well. The puzzles and the story are really quite creative. "Mad Father" (from the same dev) is a superior game imo, but both are great little gems. You witness the characters getting killed in all sorts of ridiculously silly ways, but underneath the excessive goofs is a poignant narrative about suffering, trauma and the horror of adolescence.
