Minds Beneath Us Honestly, I consider this game a masterpiece among visual novels, and Iā€™ll explain why. First of all, the most important aspect for me is the way the story is presented. The game provides enough situations and conversations to "ground" the story, allowing you to empathize with the characters and feel them as real individuals rather than just NPC puppets. This works especially well when the tension rises, evoking the emotions that the story is meant to provoke. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3434080449 Itā€™s also worth mentioning that, judging by how the game ends, there is a clear hint at a sequel, as one of the main storylines remains unresolved. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, itā€™s great when you have a complete story that can be fully evaluated. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3434599704 The game has a lot of potential, and a sequel might benefit it- but thatā€™s something only time will tell. If the continuation turns out to be average or bad, itā€™ll be easy to argue that the story should have been condensed into a single game. However, to be fair, they did set up a strong foundation for an interesting follow-up. I just hope they include save transfers with player choices - otherwise, that would be disappointing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3426520818 The soundtrack deserves special praise - not only does it enhance the atmosphere perfectly, but it's also impressive as a standalone collection of tracks. The ending left me slightly disappointed because it didnā€™t have a ā€œwowā€ effect for me, but at the same time, Iā€™m quite satisfied with it since it logically follows everything that came before. The game follows its own internal logic, and the so-called "deus ex machina" moments donā€™t feel forced once you analyze whatā€™s happening. This is an excellent example of how dialogues and storytelling should be written. Iā€™m looking forward to the sequel.

A masterclass in Sci-Fi storytelling with a gorgeous art style reminiscent of INSIDE. Minds Beneath Us tackles the ethics of utilitarianism and lets players decide "right" and "wrong", although throughout the game, it's abundantly clear that the answer isn't quite so straightforward. I can only hope the developers have a sequel in the pipeline!

I've just finished the game and wanted to leave some of my impressions here while they're fresh and my memories not too blurred from the passage of time. First of all: I did really enjoy this game - more than I actually thought possible after the long wait. In general: it's beautiful - the storytelling, the characters and the whole artistic vision were put together nicely to make you feel like you were part of a future that feels familiar in some ways and so foreign in others. All the while tackling very human, very contemporary issues that sometimes hit harder to home than I felt comfortable with. I don't really want to spoil too much as the story is pretty much what makes this game great. Let me just share this one thing that I really liked about all the dialogue choices and conversations with characters: Things were rarely black or white. Most of the time MBU offers a very "gray" perspective to the world - even the ending is no exception to that. What is right? What is wrong? How do we determine that? For us and for others? MBU further emphasizes that fact by giving us a whole bunch of loose ends that do not ever lead to a satisfying conclusion. Whether this is intentional or not - of course - can be put to debate, but in general, it felt right to me that the game - rather than explaining every tiny little detail to me - ended up leaving me in the dark. Which made "finding the right choice" even more of an obscure thing to achieve. Sure, there are certain philosophies and thoughts presented to us that do come up more often than once, but never did I feel like those were pushed onto me as "the right beliefs". As a lot of those things come up in conversations with others, it just felt "ok" for people to have certain opinions and principals they live by - and them sharing and defending them vehemently is something most people, I think, should be able to easily relate to. The gameplay itself is minimalistic which I didn't mind at all, but for anyone going into this game: It's more of a visual novel than an action adventure or anything. I'd dare say that point-and-click-adventures offer more interactivity than this game. To me this is not a bad thing, to some others it might turn "Minds Beneath Us" into a very boring and tedious endeavour though. Just be warned. If you yourself have little issue with reading in videogames, I'd say: Go for it! I hope you have as much fun with the game as I did. It's well worth the money, imho.

Have never written a review for a game. This slaps. Got so invested in the story and characters that I feel obliged to promote it somehow. Feels like a while since I played something with such an original take on the cyberpunk/hopeless sci-fi genre. Tells you a lot that a game that is 70% dialogue has been enjoyed and played to the end by so many people. Hope there's DLC or a sequel, so many questions left unsolved - in a good way. If you like the art style and music in the screenshots/trailers, and the idea of soaking in a complex world/narrative through conversations, in-game news reports, and interactable scenery and objects, then i'll save you the time by saying get this game.

Good game! Got some good hours out of it, and I'm jumping back in to explore a couple of things after this. The game play isn't complicated, and most of the difficulty comes from picking the right dialogue choices. It's definitely more like a visual novel in that aspect, which is to say that the game put an emphasis on the story, character study and world building. If this is what you want out of a game, look no further! For those of you who needed a little bit more information, let's talk a bit more. Simply from the little clips and photos in the product page, you can see the general aesthetic and art standard of the game. This quality is maintained throughout the entire game, which takes the players to many different kinds of locations, from clean office to dystopian scifi labs. The atmospheric and cinematic tag is not for show. Every shot is gorgeous. Music and sound design is decent. OST suits the theme, location and mood, and sounds designs all make sense. I regret not being able to give a more comprehensive look on it, just that from a layperson's view point, none of it feels out of place. The plot is truly riveting. It's not a detective game, but there was a mystery you must unravel by the end of the game, a mystery that appeared to be who you are and what you consider to be important. As Fran, your girlfriend character eluded to at the beginning of the game, the more massive the scale becomes, the smaller you, an individual in the system begins to feel. And somehow, that can both empower and enfeeble you. Haha, I don't know if that makes sense for the plot section, but that's all I have without spoiling. You try and do something even as the scale grows terrifyingly larger. I think anyone who ever tries and cause a change in a bigger system gets it. There are a couple of hard decisions in the game, but you generally are told if there are extra things to do, as long as you pay attention to the dialogue. I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised by the dialogue. I felt the weight of my decision when it was plot relevant, and I felt represented when given the opportunity to give my opinions. There were points when I felt like I was debating with a friend. The characters are brilliant. The character growth, the decisions they made, their emotional outburst and climaxes... Boy, it's hard to gush about it without spoilers, because they are the core of the game (imho). The characters are pushed into their limit, forced into conflicts and confronted with hard decisions. You, as your character, can sit there and judge, help, or be pulled right into their mistakes and fights. World building is solid. the futuristic technology, terminology, social movements all have their basis in reality and seems well understood. They know what to expand on and what to leave vague. I think some people have found it preachy, but from the perspective of the game, where you are a relatively helpful if self-regarding man whose girlfriend is involved in social movements.... I mean, It's a game about helping people, and how you would actually help people. It's complicated. I think a lot of people consider just talking about morals and social movements preachy. To me, the game feels more concerned with corporation crimes, and how it's hard to fight for what's right against gigantic entities with infinitely more resources and power than you, as well as the thousands and millions of ways it will grind you down using everything from ethics, moral, money and violence, leaving you to carry the weight of the decisions and hundreds of tiny mistakes twisted into a knife in your back while they sit on the throne of blood, committing way worse crimes intentionally and without a care. But that's just me. Ok, you have read too far down, TLDR, I thought the game was good, very solid, lots of choices, pretty. Have fun if you get it! Oh, right. Almost forgot. I look forward to your next game, devs. Definitely would love to come back and visit these characters, and see some of the loose ends tied!
