*edit* as of writing this review I changed to a more negative lean, I am currently dealing with a infinite chain of crisises, and have no way to win without another one coming along even though I only have 35% crisis risk. My gameplay is bricked unless I forcefully fall my civ and restart progress. It feels like a lot of the game math wasn't mathed out. A lot of fun but frustrating at times. The recent patch broke auto unit building during but it was fixed a few days later by hotfix. Always fun to see the progress of it. The second level of ascension is fun but there's a lot of frustration. The root cause is centered around crisises. I just spent 20 minutes micromanaging a chain of unending crisises (that I could not avoid due to map placement of two hostile civilizations) and noticed that once you get a certain amount of crisis risk, the game can infinitely generate crises as you are dealing with them. I don't think this mechanism is in a good spot, and to be honest it's pretty much the main antagonist (managing it) and there's not a lot of options to play around it. The preserverance bonuses for disasters are a pity 1-2%, and even if you get good heros that reduce some aspects of the crisis risk, you *must* abandon them for higer level ones since power scaling by level is insane and leveling heros is only one level at a time and costs an insane amount of resources. I enjoy the prestige screen mechanisms of upgrading certain aspects/bonuses of your civ, but the wonders are pretty boring/unneeded and don't really unlock anything besides resource swaps. The festival mechanism breaks future tech research, I was able to research ~100+ technologies in under a minute by stacking it, which caused me to gain ~100+ disasters/predicaments aswell. I also don't think disasters are really a nice mechanic, since most of them suck and can be ignored, but you can get industrial revolution and literally have to minimize crisis risk asap (which sometimes can't be done) else you lose and 'fall' from 0 pop. Also a lot of tech things are locked behind get X units which was previously pretty annoying (since you are juggling your tile specializations and switching them gives 35% risk flat which is insane), which was hard previous the ascension 2 patch but now you just upgrade the workshop with keys that gives you unit caps, and with minimal effort you can have thousands of units -- which seems like an oversight. I think these improvements are needed: - once a crisis type is dealt with, there is a buffer of X amount of time where it will not appear again (since you can't have a great fire twice, or a revolution twice, realistically) and also the crisis risks be somehow multiplexed into a larger but not additive value for final crisis value. - hero upgrades by level need to be easier, as hero management is outscaled by level so much you are better off scrapping anything less than a certain level - wonders need to be more unique somehow in order to take them, besides just giving you more flowers for ascension upgrades - other civilizations need to be neutral by default, only becoming hostile by chance or player action

This game in its current state was good enough to distract me from the emptiness of my life for around 30h, so I guess it's worth the money. Graphics are very clean and I like the style. Progression in the late game feels unfinished as it's basically more of the same with no varriance to unlockable rewards.

This is kind of a neutral / slightly recommended. It's fun for a bit, and quite addictive in fact, but eventually you realize that each age is basically the same as the last age with just upgrades to the same units and buildings. Unlike, say, the Civ series where there's some fundamental changes when you get to a new age, here you basically have all your gameplay set in the classical era and it's simply upgrading the same structures and units after that.

Fun Game. Fair amount of depth and strategy to it. Tech tree has a good depth to it, not at all hard to fill out, but the unlocks do make the game a bit easier once you are fairly deep into it. Dev is very active on the dicord, receptive to bug reports and feedback as well as general questions about the game mechanics. One of the better Indie games I have played in a while. Would definitely recommend giving the game a go if you like a casual strategy game to play while watching a YT video or catching up on email.
