! Firstly, BE AWARE that is you purchase the collection in parts, you will still have to buy it all again with the Master Collection Vol. 1 bundle to get the bonus content (the NES games, MGS1/2 graphic novel movies, etc) and they CAN NOT be purchased or collected otherwise. Even when I reached out to Steam, there was nothing I could do. Horrid, nasty, terrible, disgusting, greedy, Metal Gear nuke launching decision here. PLEASE don't be a dummy like me and just purchase the full collection if you plan to do so anyway. I just wanted to buy as I played them to not spend more than I needed at once. :/ ! At launch, this was the worst part of the volume 1 collection and a definite pass as a separate purchase. The game lacked true analog input, no display settings or filters (it was stuck at a forced internal 240p-1080p upscale with a bilinear filter that resulted in a blurry mess), some extra input delay, cloud saving issues, and more. There was absolutely no reason to play this over even the most basic emulation elsewhere besides achievement hunting officially. Not to worry so much as of this review. As the first year passed, the team made an effort to correct the rushed release that was forced upon them; by doing so, they definitely shaped this up to finally make this an easy enough recommendation (more or less). Sure, there is no widescreen/alternate aspect ratio options, 60fps (limitations to design and emulation), or true HD-4K upscaling to be found here, but it preserves the original intent well enough. I don't expect another release of these original games after these volume sets. Remakes will definitely be the way forward for better or worse as we're seeing with MGS3. Back during the PS1 days, I must have played the demo a hundred times after my brother got the PlayStation Underground disc. Sharing it with friends was such a silly time again and again. I think it speaks volumes of how much excitement even such a small piece of the game offered. The atmosphere was a bit haunting and full of unknowns. Childhood memories of the panic getting caught all came back to me in the heliport. The voice acting just spitting so much sincerity it made everything feel more real than any game had a right to be in 1998. The music and sound design is so on point that people who never played the game have heard the exclamation sound or main melody somewhere. Twists and turns at every direction with that classic Kojima goofiness. It's all here. It's unfortunate that the Twin Snakes remake isn't here for preservation and comparison, but the original has the clear storytelling edge from the way its able to handle the subdued simplicity. I love it. Obviously, its incredibly basic in hindsight, but what it achieved is still admirable and a fun arcade like romp. I absolutely highly recommend the VR Missions side game! The original game is fun adventure that deserves to be played through, but the real meat of it all comes after, in my opinion. Don't be afraid of the original 2D titles; the second game in particular is so much fun. You can definitely see how much MGS1 is practically a remake in many regards. I find a lot of joy in going by release order for a series to see how it grows and changes, and I recommend everyone try the same. You can get so much more out of the work that goes into art like this. Worked perfectly on the Steam Deck FYI. Stay sneaky everyone. :>

A hesitant recommendation. If you are not hooked by the vibes, the good bones, and the promise that this game has for whatā€™s to come, it may be best to just avoid it. It doesnā€™t feel fully fair to criticize the game on the ā€œold-game jankā€ (backtracking, stilted dialogue, awkward combat) when the game is STILL leagues ahead of what was coming out at the time. It was also soooo difficult, maybe Iā€™m just washed. (P.S. Kojima created this game with one hand down his pants)

PLEASE add cloud saves. it has been unnacceptable to submit a game on any platform without cloud saves for over a decade. without steam cloud, playing any game in the metal gear series is null and void when a user has both a desktop and steam deck. otherwise, the master collection is awesome. cheers

MGS is so good even in 2024. I replayed it for the first time since I was an 8 yr old kid back in 99 , and let me say MGS lives up to the nostalgia I have for it , and as a grown man I can appreciate it even more as the voice acting and story actually makes sense now Iā€™m fully grown. MgS Itā€™s a reallly incredible experience , and easy top tier game 10/10 worth adding to your gaming collection

holds up remarkably well even being a particularly crappy port, this classic is well worth your time you might laugh, you may cry, but you will definitely think about nuclear proliferation and the unbridled influence of the military-industrial complex
