March 2025
Excellent game, but kind of a mediocre port. This game right here was THE reason for me to get a PS2 back in the day. This game was the first time I ever felt like I was getting a “next-gen” console for the first time and the game itself ABSOLUTELY more than deserved to be considered a “next-gen” title. I haven't played this game in 23 years before I bought it on Steam and I'm happy to report that this game is still an absolute delight. A silly, serious, ridiculous and outrageous delight. Everything in this game is a 200% improvement over it’s predecessor, more detailed graphics, consistent 60 FPS, overhauled enemy AI, heavily expanded gameplay mechanics with an amazing balance between stealth and action, insanely high production values over it’s cutscenes and fantastic voice acting, all running in a single DVD disc (!). The story is kind of a convoluted mess in a GOOD way, especially the last act devolves into absolute bat sh!t insanity, I dare you to play the last few hours while tired at 3 AM 😉. This port is actually a repackage of the BluePoint port for the Xbox 360 and PS3, it's pretty darn good at preserving the presentation of the original game while enhancing it’s graphics with 4x MSAA and native widescreen, although I would’ve preferred to have the original low-res textures instead of this upscaled nonsense, but that’s just a personal nitpick. As for modern ammenities, I was surprised this game had full 50+ achievement support. While the main game offers an insane amount of replayability, this version is based on the Substance release from 2002 and it had additional content in the form of 300 VR Missions, 200 Alternate Missions and Snake Tales missions, so there's plenty of extra things to do once you're done with the main game. Unfortunately, no skateboarding here. One caveat worth mentioning is the controls, the PS2 original made use of the pressure sensitive buttons of the DualShock 2 and many actions are remapped to other buttons in modern controllers, like aiming with rifles is now set to clicking the left stick. A bit awkward, but you get used to it pretty quick. This is not a fault of the port and I don't blame it for it ... Blame Kojima, lol. The highest praise I can give to this repackaged port is that it doesn't make me want to go back to PCSX2, so that's a big plus in my book. Other than that, it still has a few minor issues. Sure they’ve fixed many problems since launch and it’s mostly a smooth and bug free experience, but the cutscene audio is fairly low quality, at least on the Steam release (it seems it’s an issue carried directly from the Xbox 360 port), thankfully there’s a mod that fixes the cutscene audio, look for the MGS2MC Better Audio mod. Also no Borderless Windowed mode in the Year of our Lord 2024, so the MGSHDFix 2.3 is mandatory. Also there's a slight audio imbalance when playing this game with 7.1 surround sound and Windows Sonic, making the Codec calls a bit more muffled compared to the rest of the game, it's especially noticeable at the beginning where the rain is louder than the Codec call, but it's the only area of the game where I noticed such audio discrepancy. I use headphones all the time and I refuse to disable Windows Sonic, so this is not an issue for me, although this gets fixed when using 5.1 surround sound speakers or just plain old Stereo. I’ve seen a few reviews complaining about crashes in cutscenes, but I’ve only experienced a single soft-lock crash in my entire first playthrough transitioning from Strut C to Strut D, although TBF it only happened when I tried to downscale from 4k, everything ran smooth as butter at my native 1080p, I use an AMD RX6600 GPU with a Ryzen 7 5700x CPU, also the game was installed on my external SSD, might be a bit overkill but it's worth mentioning, so YMMV. Also don't expect to run this game on anything older than a GTX 970, sure you can run Witcher 3 on even more ancient hardware, but this game simply refuses to run on anything older than said card. You've been warned. Overall, I fell in love with this game all over again, I still love this game with every nanomachine fiber of my being and despite the obviously dated graphics, this game still has some fantastic cutscenes and the gameplay is still a TON of fun. Port issues notwithstanding, I still give this game a 9/10 - Would La Li Lu Le Lo again.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is a scarily prophetic game about modern society. It follows two stories: the incident at a tanker with the returning Solid Snake, and the incident at Big Shell with the new character Raiden. While Snake not being a playable character for a majority of the game was controversial within the Metal Gear Solid community, I think using Raiden was the perfect way to develop the game's themes. It tackles questions about identity, legacy, AI, and even misinformation. If you know anything about Metal Gear Solid or Hideo Kojima, you know how meta and fourth-wall-breaking this gets. The topic of online information and AI is eerily similar to the issues occurring in modern society. Mind you, this game was created in 2001--over twenty years ago. It's really haunting to see a Metal Gear Solid plot come to life. With the rise of generative and "companion" AI, MGS2 becomes more relevant than ever. MGS2 is a perfect sequel to the already phenomenal MGS1; it reuses some of the themes and moments from the previous game, but also develops it further. Returning characters like Solid Snake and Otacon are subtly shown to have grown since the past few years. Snake is much more humble and optimistic, and Otacon is more confident and laidback. Otacon's side-story with E.E. really blew my mind. MGS2 is a game that is said to have changed people's views on life. With the deep monologues, rich story, and complex themes, I can't say that I disagree.

Kojima games are crazy because one minute you're fighting a vampire flying a fighter jet, then you're being manipulated by some group called the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo, and then the game just decides to drop possibly the most relevant message of all time given the day and age we are in
