Best movement in any modern fighter by far making the neutral a blast to play. You have a jump, double jump, super jump dash and airdash. Forward dash leads into a continuous run that you can jump, attack or block out of. All the character DLC is free. The game looks and sounds fantastic. EVERY CHARACTER is fun to use. Plenty of story and single player content for the casual Tsukihime fans that aren't super big on grinding the skill aspect of fighting games COMMUNITY WISE: Yes this is a discord fighter but it's THE MOST ACTIVE discord fighter I've ever seen. The majority of the game's community resides in the PSA (Panic Shield Anonymous) discord. When you ping for games you'll get a match in minutes if not seconds. It has been like this consistently since the game's release. It's stunning how active the community is considering the game is relatively niche. If you wanna learn fighting games but don't know where to start this game is perfect. The movement, rapid beat and shield mechanic makes it easy to pick up and have fun even if you're a total noob. Those same mechanics are deep and engaging once you know what you're doing. if you want to improve there's plenty of people willing to play you. Basically just play the game it's great

Game's fun. I've been playing on and off since release, and every patch makes the game better. A lot of people complainrd about the shield mechanic when the game released, and rightfully so, but even some of the biggest critics I've known of how the shield used to work say that it's almost completely reasonable now, and after the most recent patch, it's getting nerfed even a little bit more to make it less oppressive of a mechanic. But nearly every other change that's been made as the game has been develpped and updated has been some manner of buff, and the only time nerfs are made it's most likely a universal mechanic, or things that people have genuinely complained about. French Bread has a great philosophy on FG updates, and it shows in Melty Blood, that even nearly 3 years later, they're still making changes. A patch never destroys combos, only improves options.

As the first 2D fighter I've sunk my teeth into, I can confidently say that Melty Blood is a great starting point for getting into 2D fighters or even anime fighters specifically. The rapid beat (autocombo) system makes the game easy to pick up and play, and allows room for you to gradually improve on combos at your own pace until you can eventually take the training wheels off, or only use rapid beat sparingly. However, Melty Blood is very fast paced, even by fighting game standards, meaning there's an initial hurdle of execution that new players will have to overcome, but thankfully the inputs are very simple for nearly every character. The unique shield system, which allows you to block an attack and potentially retaliate in a split second rock-paper-scissors decision, adds additional depth to the defensive side of things while also allowing a safety net for those unconfident in their ability to block and retaliate traditionally. It has a varied and interesting cast that's surprisingly well balanced, even if a few characters stand out as being a little overtuned or having more tools than most other characters (looking at you, Aoko and Roa). Even the 'weaker' characters still have everything they need to perform well at higher levels of play, and at least one of the cast is sure to catch your interest, be it from their design and personality or their playstyle, even if you have little to no knowledge of Tsukihime or the Fate series. Despite its age, Melty Blood still boasts an active playerbase and is strongly recommended for fans of anime fighters or those looking for their first fighting game to get into the genre.
