the Clannad-ification of undertale... is what my snarky comment would say, but i'm too busy trying not to cry i liked it, but it needed a lot more time in the oven. characters needed more development, there needed to be more gameplay mechanics and boss fights with unique gimmicks, and more exploration and sidequests. i also personally wouldn't have paid 10 bucks for this, considering I beat it in 3 hours (it's also usually 15 dollars out of sales). but hey, I actually liked it all the way through, and it did its job in making me feel things :( :( :( that ending i thought was a bit abrupt, but fuck is it bittersweet. Give me more developers, you can't just leave off the story here, even if it is complete :( :( :(

Tentative recommendation. I like the story they're trying to tell more than how it's actually told. It's a nice sentiment, really, but it needs more polish and consideration. The story aside, the combat system lacks any meaningful depth and and the game is entirely linear despite occasionally appearing otherwise. As such, systems like the world map don't really serve any purpose.

Meg's Monster starts with a little girl, Meg, being dropped into a world full of monsters. You play as a big blue monster who serves as an adoptive father figure as he protects and comforts her, all the while trying to figure out what the heck to do with her. The narrative hook is that the girl’s crying can bring the end of the world. So not only do you have to keep her safe physically, but you also have to comfort her during battle to make sure her tears don’t cause the planet to explode. This is a pretty original concept and early on the challenge isn’t so much in beating your opponent, but keeping Meg comforted during the heat of battle. Combat takes place as a turn based battle affair with a few options: attack, guard, special attack, and play. Battles aren't super complicated but you can lose if you aren’t paying attention. I thought it was the right amount of challenge for this type of game. The strength of the game is the story which provides interesting character development for the big blue lug, Roy. He starts off living in a cave with little else other than “magic sludge” which serves as his source of sustenance. However, as he spends time with Meg, he and his surroundings begin to change. Getting furniture for his house, playing and comforting Meg, learning how to deal with a little human child when she falls and colors on the walls. It is a really nice story with fun twists and turns that keep you engaged in the story. My biggest complaint is that the pacing is a little weird part way through the game. Not to spoil too much but there is a section which serves as the climax to the climax. However, between climaxes things slow down a bit which is great to flesh out the characters, but also makes the pacing feel a little wonky. Overall, it is a solid recommendation from me! It serves as a tight, unique narrative experience with just the right amount of challenge to feel engaging during combat.

I feel like the game should have been longer or had more character development in certain areas to really have maximum impact, but it was still a pretty sweet story. "Undertale Lite" comes to mind, although it is it's own thing. Game is very linear with some small optional exploration (which is ofc what you want to do anyway ín a game like this, to get lore bits). Unsure why all that wasn't just mandatory. + Nice artstyle + Good music (although maybe repeated slightly too much) + Accessible * Story seemed a bit convoluted but it still delivered in the end * Gameplay is put behind for the narrative/world building, there's an interesting fight mechanic but it isn't really fleshed out that much If you are looking for a story-focused game, this is fairly easy recommend on sale.

Meg's Monster is a really good example of a short story game. It doesn't overstay its welcome, the mechanics and game itself never gets in the way of the experience and it does wonders in creating a world and characters with a short runtime. The only downside is that it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect. But if you're a fan of the whole 'grumpy monster becomes a dad' kind of story then it'll fit perfectly.
